3.8 + 2 I chose to read and evaluate the article titled Disney Princess.

Part 1:

3.8 1. Is there a warning banner at the top of the article? Yes

3.8 Write an brief explanation of the reason the issues mentioned in the warning banner are important. For example, if the issue is “needs additional citations for verification,” why does that matter? I think that there is a warning banner because when someone was editing this page, they either wrote something without citing a source or wrote something that is of there personal opinion.

3.8 2. Is the lead section of the article easy to understand? Does it summarize the key points of the article? The beginning of the article is easy to understand because it is an overview on what the whole article talks about in three short paragraphs.

3.8 3. Is the structure of the article clear? “Are there several headings and subheadings, images and diagrams at appropriate places, and appendices and footnotes at the end?” The structure of the article is detailed to a certain extent. There are several heading and subheadings, however, there is not that many images which is odd. The princesses are remade by Disney and, yet, there is no picture to identify the individual princesses, even though most people are familiar with the original Disney Princesses. There are tons of footnotes, meaning that there have been citations for each information that is being provided within this page.

3.8 4. Are “the various aspects of the topic balanced well”? That is does it seem to provide a comprehensive overview of the topic? Within this article, they describe in detail who the princess is, what movie they are from, and where they are originated from. Alongside, the article also includes extra information involving merchandise and attractions of the Disney Princesses.

3.8 5. Does the article provide a “neutral point of view”? Does it read like an encyclopedia article instead of a persuasive essay? Yes, because it is providing factual evidence about the individual princesses and their origin (where their stories came from).

3.8 6. Are the references and footnotes citing reliable sources? Do they point to scholarly and trustworthy information? Beware of references to blogs; look for references to books, scholarly journal articles, government sources, etc. When I reviewed the footnotes, I found that all of the citations of this article is all reliable sources such as NYTimes, LATimes, CNN, and the Disney princess website itself.

7. Look for these signs of bad quality and comment on their presence or absence from the article you are evaluating:

3.8 a. is the lead section well-written, in clear, correct English? In my opinion, I believe that the introduction in the lead section could have been rewritten for people to understand more clearer. Off the bat, they mention a name that I wasn't even familiar with so I was not sure what the intro was trying to say, until reading further into the article.

3.8 b. are there “unsourced opinions” and/or “value statements which are not neutral”? From what I read and reread, I believe that there isn't any opinions within this article, rather opinions with quotations and citations on them.

3.8 c. does the article refer “to ‘some,’ ‘many,’ or other unnamed groups of people,” instead of specific organizations or authors or facts? The authors refer mainly to the Walt Disney Companies mainly because they are the "re-creaters" of these Disney Princesses.

3.8 d. does the article seem to omit aspects of the topic? In this article, I feel like the main topic is Disney Princesses, and the author(s) basically cover all of the princesses with a brief summary of who, where, and how they are.

3.8 e. are some sections overly long compared to other sections of similar importance to the topic? Towards the end of the article, there is a section that is fairly longer than the reset of the article, which mainly talks about the role of feminism.

3.8 f. does the article lack sufficient references or footnotes? I am a Disney princess expert, myself, and I believe that the article didn't really lack sufficient references/ footnotes everything was pretty much well explained.

3.8 g. Look at the “View History” for the article. As you read the conversation there, do you see hostile dialogue or other evidence of lack of respectful treatment among the editors? From what I noticed, it was mainly positive aspects amongst the editors because they were adding off of each others ideas.

5 Relevance (to your research topic) It is relevant to my topic because I am going to be observing the way that women are portrayed in the Disney films.

5 Depth The information about each Disney Princess has a brief summary their specific history; for instance, when Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was made in 1937, Snow White portrays a house wife staying home and baking while the men went to work, which was normal during that era. However, in the recent Disney Princess movie Brave, Merida stands up for herself explaining why she is best without having someone being assigned to marry her and going against the law of their country. See the difference here?
