The City of Del City is a home rule city and has operated under a council-manager form of city government provided by the city charter since 1959. The city is governed by the city council which is made up of four council members who represent the four wards of Del City, in the event of a tie vote the mayor casts the tie breaking vote. The mayor and city council set policy and appoint a city manager who carries out the day-to-day operations of the city government. The Mayor and city council can only serve three four year terms in the same office.
History
editThe City of Del City was incorporated on October 9, 1948 by a vote of its citizens, however a formal city government was not established till February of 1959 when the city adopted a city charter and a council-manager form of government. Ray Trent was elected as the city's first mayor, and Huey Long was hired as the city's first manager. To date 15 individuals have served as mayor since 1959.
