recs of the flesh is a noise rock band from Sardinia. The band consists of Massimo Usai (electric guitar/vocals), Sara Melis (keyboards), Justin Wood (bass guitar) and Xavier Dilme (drums).

The band started as a solo project in 2004, when Massimo Usai sought an outlet for his vision-driven high temperature fever, and inspired by W. S. Burroughs' THE SOFT MACHINE. Their sound has been compared to bands such as Sonic Youth, Killing Joke, Queens Of The Stone Age and Placebo in reviews [2][3][4]. All band members met on the internet, with the notable exception of Massimo and Sara, who met while Usai was working as a sound tech at a drag queen show in summer 2006. Xavier was found drumming on his YouTube channel [5] while Justin and Massimo met at the official Sonic Youth Gossip Boards.

Music

edit

recs of the flesh has a sound based on dissonant guitar riffing, distorted keyboards, hard pounding drum lines, a very present bass and a urgent vocal delivery. Their songs, while dealing with experimental sound textures, apply to a somewhat standard verse/chorus/verse structure. The themes treated in lyrics often refer to psychological conditions and confusional states of the mind.

After several different line up changes and the recording of two demo cds, Introducing Apophenia (2006) and Cigarette Secrets (2007), Massimo and Sara started preproduction for a full length release in early 2008. The band recorded their first record Illusory Fields Of Unconsciousness during August 2008, during which Xavier traveled from his native Catalunya to Sardinia, in order to lay down the drum lines in the band's home studio, The Crimson Dome. In the meanwhile, Justin started working on the bass in St. Paul, Minnesota. The band was able to put together the album via online tools such as videocalls and instant messenger services.

The sound presented in the album has been described as a blend of several genres, and found the press dealing with the heavy delivery of the band's sonic explorations: "It's not often these days that an album hits as hard as this one. There are death metal bands out there who can only dream of making as much sonic impact as Recs of the Flesh do"[6].
