Walter Siehe

Walter Siehe was a German engineer and businessman who lived from 1897 in the Cilician region of southern Turkey. He regularly collected plants in the mountains of Adana and neighbouring regions, sending his collections to European herbaria. He also exported bulbs for cultivation and submitted a series of papers on his botanical explorations to the Sammler and Allgemeine Botanische Zeitung, under the title "Botanische Forschungsreise nach Kleinasien".[1]

Walter Sıehe’nin (1859-1928) Anadolu Bitkileri Koleksiyonu Asuman Baytop Published 2009 Engineering Osmanli Bilimi Arastirmalari Walter Siehe (1859-1928) was a German engineer with a passion for plants, engaged in Adana in the construction of Anatolian Baghdad Railway. He purchased land in 1897 at Fındıkpınarı, in Mezitli district, Turkey, where he stayed about 25 years. He mainly planted fruit trees in his garden. He made excursions nearly every year in the regions of Adana, Icel, Konya, Nigde, Kayseri, Sivas and collected plant specimens which he sent to European herbaria. He especially gathered bulbous plants and exported them to European growers. The Flora of Turkey project has examined his Anatolian collection. In the Flora are cited 740 specimens of Siehe, where the great majority bear date and number in their citations. The earliest specimen is dated 1889 and the latest 1919. Basing on specimen numbers, the collection of Siehe from Anatolia may be approximatively evaluated to not less than 8000 specimens. They are distributed in 29 herbaria, one in U.S.A., one in Ankara (Turkey), the others in Europe. According to Flora of Turkey, Siehe has collected the type specimens of 66 new taxa. They come from the provinces of Adana, Icel, Nigde, Konya and Kayseri. Three of them were published by himself. In the naming of 14, he is a coauthor. 10 taxa bear his name as epithet. He has published at least 22 articles related to Turkish bulbs and trees between 1897 and 1929

WALTER SIEHE’S ENIGMA: LOST SPECIES OF SIEHE! Hasan YILDIRIM l 3, No 1 (2013) > YILDIRIM ABSTRACT

In scope of this study, road map of Walther Siehe who lived in Turkey during 25 years in the early 1900s and added great contribution to Flora of Turkey was put forward. Chionodoxa siehei and Verbascum rupicola were discovered by Walter Siehe and only known from the type localities. In spite of revisional and flora studies, these plants were not collected again from the type locality up to date. Recent years, rediscovered both species in İzmir that is far away from their type localities in records of Walter Siehe. Consequently, confusion in the records of plant collecting localities of Walter Siehe are demonstrated in this study[2]

Several Herbarium Specimens of Arabis aubrietoides are stored in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.[3]

also Scilla cilicica Siehe is stored in the Natural History Museum, London.[4]
