This is an essay. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. Some essays represent widespread norms; others only represent minority viewpoints. |
This page is an intended essay on why, though you stick to Wikipedia rules and guidelines, and others don't, "You'll never win".
To facilitate easier reading of this essay, quoted "official" Wikipedia content (policies, guidelines, etc) is reproduced in this colored font and is usually blockquoted (indented fore and aft). Of course, like everything else in this Wankerpedia, text quoted from the policies and guidelines doesn't mean sqat as what's copied from there today, may read differently tomorrow. Alas!
If you have any suggestions for this essay, please discuss them on the talk page.
Introduction
edit"The fundamental principles by which Wikipedia operates are the Five pillars."
"People of all ages, cultures and backgrounds can add or edit article prose, references, images and other media here. What is contributed is more important than the expertise or qualifications of the contributor. What will remain depends upon whether it fits within Wikipedia's policies, including being verifiable against a published reliable source, so excluding editors' opinions and beliefs and unreviewed research, and is free of copyright restrictions and contentious material about living people. Contributions cannot damage Wikipedia because the software allows easy reversal of mistakes and many experienced editors are watching to help and ensure that edits are cumulative improvements. Begin by simply clicking the edit link at the top of any editable page!"
"Contributions remain the property of their creators, while the CC-BY-SA and GFDL licenses ensure the content is freely distributable and reproducible."
This piece of policy would be laughable if it wasn't so serious. Whilst Wikipedia continues its acceptance of anonymous editing via pseudonyms, it cannot possibly be relied upon to protect the copyright conferred on the creators of the content. While such content is licensed and "freely distributable and reproducible" anonymity makes correct attribution a virtual impossibility, thus "Wikipedia" gets all the attribution whilst individual contributors receive none. This is very convenient for Wikipedia's search engine rankings, but not much else.
