The Dark Knight Universe is the fictional shared universe in which the various Batman stories written by Frank Miller take place. This universe was designated Earth-31 of the DC Universe Multiverse in post-Infinite Crisis and pre-New 52 continuity. The Dark Knight Universe first appeared in The Dark Knight Returns #1, published February 1986. All of the various prequels, sequels and spin-offs of The Dark Knight Returns take place within the Dark Knight Universe.

edit- In 2011, Batman: Year One, an animated film based upon the story arc of the same name was released.
- The Dark Knight Returns has been adapted into two animated films. The first film, titled Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 was released on September 2012, while the second film, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 was released on January 2013. On October 2013, a Deluxe Edition of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns was released that combined the two films into one film.
