The family Actinosphaeriidae is a family of aquatic heliozoa that contains two genera, Actinosphaerium and Camptonema.[1] They are all spherical heliozoa with many needle-like axopodia and have a highly vacuolated ectoplasm, and are multinucleate.[2][3][4] Species in this family have one or more contractile vacuoles that are used to control buoyancy and maintain homeostasis, which are visible on the organism as clear bulges from the spherical cell body.
