Galerius became emperor with Constantius Chlorus after the abdication of Diocletian and Maximian in 305, and took over the role of senior emperor, and emperor of the east from Diocletian. In 306, his colleague Constantius Chlorus died, while fighting the Picts. The son of Constantius, Constantine I, was proclaimed emperor in the west by the Roman troops in Britain.
