Early Life

edit

Kim Dong-hyuk (Korean: 김동혁) was born on January 3, 1997, in Seoul, South Korea. During his school years, he was a student body president and a valedictorian with numerous academic achievements and obtained several prizes in writing and drawing, to name a few.[2] While he was in elementary school, he studied abroad in the US for 6 (six) months and was addressed with an English name Ezra Kim. He later revealed that his full English name is Christian Ezra Daniel Kim, given by his homestay parents.[6]

During his middle school year, Kim Dong-hyuk joined DEF Dance Skool, and in February 2012, he auditioned for the 9th JYP Trainee Search and won 1st place.[7][8] Following the audition, he went through the JYP trainee program for a brief period and was in charge of rapping.[7] Within the same year, he joined the close audition for YG Entertainment and was officially recruited and decided to join as a trainee under the label on November 5th, 2012. Later in 2018, an article mentioned that Kim Dong-hyuk has also been a trainee at SM Entertainment for a short period, making him the idol trainee who has passed the audition of the big three major domestic agencies.[8]

2013-2014: Pre-debut WIN Who Is Next and Mix & Match

edit

In 2013, Kim Dong-hyuk participated in the reality survival show WIN: Who is Next as a member of Team B. The show concluded with Team A winning the program and team B returning to continue the training under the YG label.[9] A year after, in 2014, Team B competed again in the second reality survival show, Mix & Match, under YG Entertainment, which resulted in all Team B members debuted alongside trainee Jung Chan-woo, under the name iKON.[10]

On September 15, 2015, iKON released a warm-up single “My Type”, followed by lead singles “Rhythm Ta” and “Airplane”.[11] Kim Dong-hyuk took part in choreographing for the first time for the song “Airplane”.[12]. The group then released its debut album ”Welcome Back” on December 24, 2015.

In March 2017, together with Katie Kim, Kim Dong-hyuk featured in the song “Secret” from bandmate Bobby’s studio album Love and Fall, for which he is also credited as the co-lyricist.[13]

Following the debut album, iKON released a new album series under the name New Kids, starting with New Kids: Begin album in 2017, Return album with its song of the year “Love Scenario” in January 2018, New Kids: Continue and New Kids: the Final in August and October 2018 respectively.

As a choreographer, Kim Dong-hyuk has been active in choreographing parts for several songs in iKON’s discography, such as Killing Me, Freedom, Cocktail, and Best Friend. In addition to that, he has also choreographed iKON’s stage performances in 2018 Sugarman 2 “Everything to You”, 2018 iKON’s MMA Intro Stage, and 2019 iKON’s Year End Concert.[14]

On February 6, 2020, iKON released their third EP, i Decide, which included five tracks with Dive as the lead single.[15] Kim Dong-hyuk debuted as songwriter and record producer of “Flower” ((너란 바람 따라; neolan balam ttala; lit. Follow the wind that is you), one of the sidetrack singles, in which he also choreographed their dance performances.[16][17][18] During its release, “Flower” (너란 바람 따라) ranked 1st in MelOn Ballad Category and 28th on iChart.

Prior to “Flower”, Kim Dong-hyuk has been active in composing and songwriting, one of them being “SUrF", in which he was credited alongside with Bobby.[19] They performed the song together at 2018 iKON private stages and 2019 Japan concerts, however, this song is yet to be released officially to this date.

As the main dancer of iKON, Kim Dong-hyuk has released several dance covers, the most notable being “DK x The Kinjaz”, which was released on October 18, 2018, as an endorsement to YG X Academy.[20] Together with the famed duo from worldwide dancers and choreographers, Anthony Lee and Vinh Nguyen, they performed to Andy Mineo and Lecrae "Coming in Hot".

On March 3, 2021, iKON returned with the new digital single “Why Why Why" in which he also took part in choreographing the song's chorus.[23][24]

In April 2021, iKON participated in Kingdom: Legendary War, a competition show alongside five other K-pop boy groups. Kim Dong-hyuk reportedly was actively involved in planning the production, directing the performance, and recording sessions for iKON's stages. He was given recognition for his versatility and contribution for iKON and the unit and special performances, from the introduction to the finale vocal stage.[25][26]

Starting Dec 2021, Kim Dong-hyuk is actively hosting 2 radio programs, iKON Day at Station Z 89.1 and iKON's Zero Zone Diary, with the latter, is focusing on educating and advancing sustainability.
