Team Chelsea

edit

Team Chelsea is a facebook group created for house pets that may have gotten away from their home and need to find their way back. This group was originally created for the Durham Region area, and only for lost dogs. Team Chelsea is a volunteered based group that assists all surrounding animal homes like the Durham Humane Society, vet offices, vet hospitals, and any other places that may house animals. By creating this group, the pet found is less likely to be put into an animal rescue or humane society and actually claimed by the original owners. Sometimes the home owner may need to give the dog up, so this website gives others looking another way of finding the perfect pet needing a loving home quickly, or they are unfortunately having to put them into a shelter to handle the adoption process

In the fall of 2011, individuals had lost their dog Chelsea and wanted to get extra help in finding her, leading them to the social media network facebook, created a group in which the community could keep an eye out for the dog. This has now grown into a place the residents turn to in hopes of the 6, 103 members help keep a look out for any stray pets wandering around. [1]

Community Involvement

edit

The many communities located around Durham Region, either in Ajax or Oshawa, all keep an eye out for any loose/wandering animals and are encouraged to either try to pick the animal or take a description of the animal and post the whereabouts it was spotted. The creators continue to check on every post and make sure the animals that have not yet found their home again remain as the top posts, allowing the members to see which ones are still missing.

Why Opt for Adopting from Shelters or Rescues

edit

Reasons behind the choice to put an animal into a rescue or shelter, including the animal has a lack of training, the family has a change in their lifestyle, the aging and cost of the animal, or they might have been a stray to begin with.[2] Ways to prevent scenarios of pets being shipped off to shelters would be to take all precautions before adopting an animal include to think about all things listed above and make sure to be prepared, and to consider other alternatives than a shelter before surrendering the pet. [3]

There tends to be a larger amount of older pets that end up in shelters. This occurs because more issues with the animal’s health tend to rise, and so does the vet bill, leaving owners to make a difficult decision which would be to surrender them to a shelter. [4]
