Description
editThe RoboCop statue depicts the title character of the 1987 sci-fi, action film RoboCop, in which a cyborg police officer fights corruption and criminals in a dystopian Detroit. The film is a violent satire of violence and was celebrated for its campiness, leading to a franchise of sequels and spin-offs. The statue itself is 11 feet tall and weighs 2.5 tons.[1]
Creation
editThe Detroit artist collective Imagination Station created the statue following a 2011 crowdfunding campaign spurred by online interest. The campaign followed a Detroiter's Twitter message to Mayor Dave Bing for such a statue and continued with encouragement from other Detroiters.[1]
After the Michigan Science Center rescinded its offer to host the statue, the mayor of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, offered to host the statue, as the hometown of RoboCop actor Peter Weller, potentially in a park named after the actor. The statue's artists, however, reaffirmed their commitment to keep the statue in Detroit and were in talks for a new location.[1]
