This is a list of video games that have been released or relicensed by their copyright holder under a free use license, such as Creative Commons or even the public domain. Free use licenses specifically afford users the freedom to make screenshots/animations/videos of the games, such that they can be used as illustrations, especially on a site that prefers free-use content like Wikipedia. Freeware games or commercial video games released as freeware only allow a game's free distribution and do not give content rights. Open-source video games may make the code sharable but not the art assets (looking at you, Id Software).
