During the 2000–2020 period, an average January features 32 tornadoes across the United States, the lowest month in a given year;[11] the broader 1991–2010 climatology is slightly higher at 35.[12] With no confirmed tornadoes throughout the country in January,[13][11] 2003 became only the second year after 1986 to feature such a dearth of activity.[14]
