Playoff Tiebreaker Scenarios edit

Note that as Colombia and Chile must still play each other, Peru would never enter the situation of having to use the head to head tie-breaker with Uruguay (which they would win). The following (numerous!) situations are possible for the 5th South American place and hence Australia's opponents - not including the scenarios where one team finishes fifth outright.

  • Five-way tie between Colombia, Chile, Venezuela, Uruguay and Peru, on 21 points for 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th.
Colombia would progress to the playoff.
  • Four-way tie between Colombia, Chile, Uruguay and Peru, on 21 points for 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th.
Colombia would progress to the playoff.
  • Four-way tie between Chile, Venezuela, Uruguay and Colombia, on either 21, 22 or 24 points for 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th.
Chile would progress to the playoff.
  • Three-way tie between Uruguay, Colombia and Chile, on either 21, 22 or 24 points for 5th, 6th and 7th.
If Columbia did not win the Colombia - Chile match, then Uruguay would progress. If Colombia did win that match, then Colombia would progress.
  • Two-way tie between Chile and Colombia, on 22, 23 or 24 points for 5th and 6th.
If the Colombia - Chile game ended as a draw, then it would go to overall goal difference. Otherwise the winner of that game would progress to the playoff.
  • Two-way tie between Uruguay and Chile, on 22, 23 or 24 points for 5th and 6th.
Uruguay would progress to the playoff.
  • Two-way tie between Colombia and Uruguay, on 22, 23 or 24 points for 5th and 6th.

Paraguay would finish ahead of Uruguay in this case, so depending on whether this tie was for 4th and 5th or 5th and 6th would determine the playoff contender.

Colombia would finish ahead of Paraguay, so depending on whether this tie was for 4th and 5th or 5th and 6th would determine the playoff contender.

Ecuador would qualify and Paraguay would progress to the playoff in this case.
  • Two-way tie between Ecuador and Chile on 26 points.
If Chile defeats Ecuador by more than two goals, then they will finish ahead of Ecuador. If they defeat Ecuador by exactly two goals then it will go to overall goal difference. If Chile only manages a one goal victory over Ecuador, then Ecuador will finish ahead of Chile. Whether this tie was for 4th and 5th or 5th and 6th would determine the playoff contender.
