Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press is a non-profit organization dedicated to media democracy and media justice.

Founding of WIFP

edit

It was founded in 1972 by Dr. Donna Allen, Ph.D. [1] in Washington D.C. and is currently run by president and director Martha Leslie Allen, Ph.D.[2] Dana Densmore[3] and Paula Kassell[4] serve as vice presidents[5].

Philosophy

edit

The Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press stands on a philosophy that believes democracy means that every person has an equal opportunity to be heard, and that society needs each person's contribution in order to reach viable decisions. WIFP strives to promote media democracy in the present structure of mainstream media in order to create a communications landscape in which all people can speak for themselves. They encourage changes from two levels of the communications field: women-owned media and women working in male-owned mass media to bring little-heard issues, perspectives and coverage to mass media[6].

Publications

edit

WIFP produces four main publications, all available for public access.

The Directory of Women's Media, published from 1975-1989 and again from 2001 to the present, is a compilation of periodicals, publishers, media organizations and other media categories owned by and operated primarily by women[7].

Voices for Media Democracy has been published annually from 2001 to the present[8], focusing on current women's and media issues.

Media Democracy Online is a journal available only online that publishes articles on issues of media democracy and women's rights[9].
