About Archiving

It is possible to create an archive page for Wikipedia talk pages, including user talk pages. This user subpage was created as an archive, but does not meet the technical criteria for an archive.

Several errors caused this page to fail in its original purpose. First, there is no markup code at the top of the page to identify it as an archive or to trigger the archiving function for a page. Second, there were navigational errors. The script that was intended to trigger the archiving function was placed on the user talk page, while this subpage, created to receive archived content, was created as a subpage of the main user page.

Another error was the failure to add a navigational link to either the main page or the user talk page. While this did not interfere with the intended page function, it did cause the page to be "lost" or difficult to find.

When found, the page contained the following content:

Attempted archive of projected articles.

Project: expand article on the First Battle of Dalton.

The user speculates that she manually placed this content on the page. It is unlikely that any content was automatically archived to this page, for there is no markup to cause automatic archiving.

There has been at least one other attempt at creating an archive page for talk-page content. The user talk page contains a link and a subpage related to that attempt. The resulting archive page (linked below) may or may not function properly.

While the link does lead to the correct page, there is a problem. The mobile view only shows page headings. The only way to view other page content (that is, archived content) is to follow a link that says, "View as Wiki page."
