Biography

Studies

Hugo Travers completed his high school studies with a specialisation in economics and sociology at the lycée Jean-Pierre-Vernant in the commune of Sèvres in the Hauts-de-Seine department of France[1],[2].

He started his undergraduate studies at the Sciences Po Paris in 2015 and finished his studies with a masters in Communications, Media and Creative Industries in 2020[3]. He wants to become a journalist[4].

In 2012, while still in high school, he launched Radio Londres, which was originally a hashtag used to announce the results of the French presidential election, but later turned into a news website[5].

HugoDécrypte

In 2015, while he was in his first year at Sciences Po, he created his YouTube channel « Hugo Décrypte ». The channel aimed to be accessible to young people and informative with "a journalistic level of news" presented in short videos[4].

Two years later, he interviewed multiple presidential candidates for the 2017 French presidential election. Later, he interviewed candidates for the 2019 European Parliament election, including Nathalie Loiseau and Benoît Hamon. He published all the interviews on his YouTube channel. He even interviewed Emmanuel Macron on May 24, 2019 during the 2019 European Parliament election[6].

In 2018, he received a grant from YouTube as part of the YouTube Creators for Change program[7].

On March 17, 2020, he started a series of daily news update on the topic of Covid-19 which was called "Point Coronavirus" (Coronavirus Update). The series quickly broadened its scope of subjects and it was renamed "Actus du Jour" (News of the Day) and it is still ongoing today, also accessible as a podcast[8].

In 2020, in partnership with the French content creator Micode and presenter Jean Sabouret, he created Frame55, a social media marketing agency[9].

On February 5, 2021, he interviewed French minister of higher education Frédérique Vidal live on his Twitch channel to discuss the poor mental health of students as a result of university closures[10].

As of September 2021, the company HugoDécypte employs 13 people[10].

On September 23, 2021, the French news channel BFM TV reported his channel, as well as the channels of several other streamers who live streamed commentary on the political debate between Éric Zemmour and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, to Twitch. The channel was banned from Twitch for 48 hours as a result[11]. Jean-Luc Mélenchon expressed his support for the creators who were banned[12].

In 2022 and 2023, Hugo Travers published interviews with many different celebrities, such as Belgian singer-songwriter Stromae (April 28, 2022), French aerospace engineer Thomas Pesquet (May 5, 2022), Bill Gates (June 2, 2022), 2021 and 2022 Formula One World Champion Max Verstappen (July 31, 2022), French actor Pierre Niney (Novermber 6, 2022), Belgian singer-songwriter Angèle (December 6, 2022), Hugh Jackman (March 6, 2023), and Christopher Nolan (July 16, 2023). Some of these videos have surpassed millions of views[13].

On July 3, 2023, Hugo Travers announced a new format for his daily news series « Les actus du jour » in the form of a daily newsletter send by email, for those who prefer to read the news and so that his team can publish the articles which did not make it into the videos[14].

On September 4, 2023, he interviewed Emmanuel Macron[15] on the topic of the future of the French education system within the context of the ban of the abaya in schools. The interview was titled "Quel avenir pour les jeunes" (The future for young people) and was streamed live on YouTube and TikTok[16].

Mashup

On January 13, 2022, he started a weekly news series in a talk-show format, called "Mashup", which is streamed on Twitch[17].

In 2017, during the French presidential election, he became the columnist for the French news channel LCI, in the broadcast with Christophe Jakubyszyn[18].

In March 2019, he debated Marine Le Pen on the topic of false news on an episode of the French political debate show L’Émission politique on the France 2 TV channel[5].
