Goose Creek High school is located just outside of Goose Creek, South Carolina. This town includes one other high school, Stratford High School. The school offers grades 9-12. The current principal is Jimmy Huskey. Goose Creek High school is a public high school that was founded in 1970. Former principals include John Fulmer.

Academics

As of 2012, Goose Creek High school has a population of 1677 students. The teacher to student ratio is 16.89 students to every teacher. The school employs a total of 98 teachers. Sophomores were 88.8 percent proficient in language arts and 84.6 percent proficient in math.[1] The school is 49.97 percent female, and 50.03 percent male. [1] Goose Creek High is the only school in Berkeley county that offers the Berkeley Center for the Arts program. This program includes drama, dance, voice, strings and creative writing.[2]

As of 2012, sports offered at Goose Creek High include baseball, boy's basketball, girl's basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, track and field, soccer, softball, swimming, girl's tennis, girl's volleyball, and wrestling.

Football

As of the 2012 football season, the head coach of the Goose Creek Gators is Charles "Chuck" Reedy who formerly coaches at a number of colleges including Baylor University, Clemson University, and the University of South Carolina. Before Reedy took over in 2002, the Gators had eight consecutive losing seasons. In 2001, the team was 0-11. When Reedy took over in 2002, the team had its ninth consecutive losing season going 1-10. In 2003, the Gators had another losing season, but still advanced to the playoffs. In 2004, the losing streak was snapped with a final record of 8-5. In 2008, winning started to become normal for the Gators. The 2008 team finished 9-4, the 2009 team finished 10-4, and the 2010 team finished 13-1.[3] The 2009 and 2010 teams both lost in the state semifinals. The 2010 team's lone loss was to Northwestern High school. The 2011 football team finished with a final record of 14-1 and won the first AAAA Division 2 State Football Championship in school history. The team's lone loss came in the second game of the season in a double overtime game against University School out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.[4] On average, the Gators outscored opponents by 36 points. Over the entire season, the Gators averaged just under 48 points a game. The defense had three shutouts in this 2011 season and also held 10 different opponents to under a touchdown or less during the game. [5] On October 12, 2012, the Gators played a game against the Cane Bay Cobras on ESPNU. The game kicked off at 6 o'clock p.m. and at the time, the Gators were ranked the #23 team in the ESPN 25 Power Rankings.[6] The game ended in a final score of 55-0, with Goose Creek winning.

National Rankings

The 2011 varsity football team ranked nationally in multiple polls. In MaxPreps the Gators finished the season ranked the #30 team in the nation.[7] In the Rivals high school rankings, the Gators finished the season as the #48 team in the nation.[8] As of October 23, 2012, the 2012 varsity football team is also ranked nationally throughout many different polls. The gators are ranked #16 nationally in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 Poll.[9] The Rivals High rankings has the Gators coming in at #28 nationally.[10] Finally, the USA Today national high school rankings have the Gators ranked as the #12 team in the country.[11] In all of these polls that Gators are ranked #1 in the state of South Carolina.

State Championships

Boy's Basketball

In 2009 the varsity Boy's Basketball team won the AAAA South Carolina Boy's Basketball State Championship. The head coach of this team was Brad Dobbles, who as of 2012, is an assistant coach at Charleston Southern University.[12] On the road to the State Championship the team beat West Florence High, Summerville High, West Ashley High, Fort Dorchester High and ended with beating Gaffney High School 63-58 in the State Championship.[13]

Girl's Basketball

In 2012 the varsity Girl's Basketball team won the AAAA South Carolina Girl's Basketball State Championship. The head coach was Tim Baldwin and as of 2012 remains the head girl's basketball coach. The team went 22-1 in the regular season with the lone loss coming to Redan High School, out of Stone Mountain, Georgia.[14] In the playoffs, on the way to winning a state championship, the team beat West Florence High, North Augusta High, Hartsville High, Dutch Fork High, and finally beating Spring Valley High School 52-51 in the State Championship.[15] The team ended the season with a overall record of 27-1.[16]

Football

Under head coach Chuck Reedy, the 2011 Varsity Football team won the AAAA Division 2 State Championship. This was the first football state championship in school history. The team ended the regular season 10-1 and entered the playoffs as the number 1 seed.[17] The team started the playoffs by playing Lancaster High school. Goose Creek won the game 49-12 and advanced to the second round. There, the Gators beat Northwester High school (who eliminated the Gators the previous year) 41-7. In the third round the Gators played North Augusta and beat them 49-6.[18] In the state championship the Gators faced the Greenwood Eagles. The game was played at Memorial Stadium at Clemson University and was a noon kickoff time. The Gators won the game and the state championship by a score of 37-21.[19]

School Layout

Goose Creek High is constructed into eight different "wings." Each wing consists of classrooms with wing specific room numbers. For example, room 211 is located on the 200 wing. The eight wings include the 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, and 800 wings. Located in the 100 wing is the main cafeteria, main office, guidance offices, nurse, library, and teachers service center. The school's second cafeteria, the L.A. cafeteria, is located in between the 500 and 600 wings. The L.A. office is located on the 500 wing. The school's gym is its own separate building. This building includes the basketball court, the weight room, locker rooms, the training room, coaches offices, and the equipment room.
