Since I have had a lot of trouble in the past I'm just trying to stay out of it, I'm just contributing to wikipedia but Randalph P. Wiliams is trying to get me in trouble I see. Good job you blocked him but would you care to delete the page Category:Wikipedia sockpuppets of Kermanshahi as I have no sockpuppets and the page being there brings me a bad name. Writing help

edit

Chris, do you know of a list editors who volounteer to help with the writing of articles? I have several sandboxes of articles I've created recently with text-dumps from several sources that need to be rewritten, but, for me, that is the most tedious part of creating an article. I now have 13 new articles that need text added, with several more to come. I keep finding new articles to create, and with watching my watchlist, I hardly have the energy to do the rewriting. Is there a place on Wikipedia to ask for this kind of help? Thanks. - BillCJ 01:48, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

off the top of my head I do not. I would but i am getting reayd to leave for a well needed week long vacation. I will take a look at it tomorrow my last day in town and see what I can do. Thanks for the heads up. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 01:56, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for looking into it with the time you have. Enjoy your vacation! - BillCJ 02:37, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

The ISP editor is clearly Lightbringer... he tips his hat with both his edit to delete the Holocaust section and his comment on the talk page. Please report him. Blueboar 14:31, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

You might want to take a look at the WP:AN3RR board. 2nd from the bottom, regarding the edit warring going on at State terrorism by the US. I re-organized the diff's and there is clearly a 4RR + 1 anon IP violation. Peace.Lsi john 22:13, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Doubt

edit

I was watching 'recent changes' and a move intrigued me. Why do you think Del toro is an innapropriate username?? Films addicted 20:55, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Films Addicted

It is a somewhat local thing. Read the page he edited, the one on the tommy and rumble show, it is in relation to a local radio show and a former host who died recently. The said host was at odds with a current host involving law suits. It is in regards to a recent on air stunt the show pulled mocking the chris benoit case. I will explain in more detail tomorrow if you so desire. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:52, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Well, as I see it, the ban regards to innapropriate comments and editions by El toro not about an innapropiate username itself. I was affraid Benicio del toro couldn't be allowed to edit here :-) Films addicted

It was purly in the context of the article he edited. I understand your concerns. I would not just block any name that met that pattern. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 00:04, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi. Perhaps only semi-protection is required for the page since most of those edits are coming from anonymous/new users. And are they still talking about it on air? - Akamad 07:57, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

?I dont believe I have participated in the enhancement of that article? -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:01, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Hi, ChrisIk02. I do recall asking you a couple months back if you had any objections to its nomination (which is more than many of the other editors had to contend with by the way). If you know of any editors (even one rational edit counts) please give them a barnstar too if you think it's worth something (I tried and failed to give one to every editor). So not to worry, some people like them, some don't. Hope that explains. -Susanlesch 21:17, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Chris, there is a newbie editor that has insisted that the flight of the Spirit of St. Louis was the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic and has constantly reverted the article to eliminate the word "solo". He has not responded to the discussion page or to the note left on his "talk" page. These are his only contributions to Wiki articles and he continues to make spurious claims, see: [2] He will not stop the reverting although he has been politely informed that constant reversions without explanation on the discussion page is not considered appropriate. Asking for help here. Thanks Bzuk 13:34, 12 July 2007 (UTC).

Sock puppet family...

edit

With the help of Sikh historian, I have discoverd a family of sock puppets. I don't know if it's a shared IP, but they are all making the same edit over and over again. Here are the IPs.

  • 69.249.119.18
  • 69.241.250.155
  • 70.2.247.160
  • 70.2.251.18

Could you please look into this?

Thanks in advance...

JONJONBT talkhomemade userboxes 18:02, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

That does not generally qualify as a sock puppet. What article are you referring to? The only real option here is protection as the IP range cannoty be effectivley blocked. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:41, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Album covers

edit

Re [3]; Ok then, get out your axe and head on over to Slayer#Controversy :) I removed four album covers from this article, and another editor re-added Image:Slayer - Christ Illusion.jpg. Your call :) --Durin 15:07, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

That one is quesitonable. I will agree that it is used for critical commentary which is an important part of FUC. Even thouygh not in the article on the CD itself, it is one of the true examples I have seen of a cd cover being truly used for critical commentary instead of for decorative purposes only. I think fighting over that would be fairly pointless personally and time better spent removing fu images from discographies etc. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 15:11, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

IP vandal

edit

Was that IP going back to an open proxy? It was listed out of Belgium. In any case, the argument was flawed OR (never mind that we don't source the basis for articles to other articles), and the IP wasn't going to change his mind so much as change the argument so that it fit what he wanted. MSJapan 17:19, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

It looked like lightbringer and smelled like lightbringer so, the duck test passes enough for me. Just gave the ip a short block and the page a short protection to prevent abuse. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:24, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
I don't disagree with the block at all; disruption and statements prove the case. I was going to say I wouldn't tie LB to it explicitly, but given Lestervee, he seems to have learned how to spell (though he doesn't know how to use the word lemma). So on further thought, "QUACK!" I love barnstars! And smileys! I'm trying to do my best to keep Wikipedia vandal free, but I think I need a better ISP, lol. So many people get the revert ahead of me. (Of course, that could be because I take the time to look over the revision, and compare versions before hitting that "rollback" button, lol.) I am glad it is of some help, however, so thank you very much! ArielGold 20:44, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
I use VP (Just got it and really it doesn't work well, I get constant runtime errors, and the fix posted for it didn't work for me) and VF (not at the same time, lol) and Twinkle. I started out using Lupin's, but really disliked the output, so I went with just Twinkle for a while and was too slow with refreshing my watch page, etc. Then I found there was an IRC channel, so honestly, while I use VF mostly, it is really a supplement for IRC, the output in IRC (while the bot spam can be a bit unruly at times with irrelevant info) is much easier for me to spot items that need immediate attention, but even so, the link barely comes into the channel and it is reverted by fast speedy folks (can you say DerHexer? lol, love that guy) who have a better internet connection than I do. That is alright though, because unless it is gross, obvious vandalism (swearing, obvious racial hate speech, etc.) I do not just hit the button, I compare the two revisions, and I look over the red text to see what was changed, and that does take a bit of time.
Plus, I have my own little set of "first time offense" boxes, that I like to use on those people that just "feel" like their edits were not intentional, but mistakes made by users unfamiliar with wiki's script/language. For those instances, I have the philosophy of: if I warn someone with the generic warning, text only, it can be taken wrong, but if I put a little box with a smiley face, or a face of someone gasping, and have a greeting with helpful links in it, the psychological clues are that my intent is in no way mean, or authoritative. And hey, that user may turn around and become a great contributor! (At least that is my optimistic hope.)
I think if there was ever a grading contest on reversion speed, I'd fail miserably, rofl. I like to leave cute messages, instead of the standard warnings, and I enjoy stopping to smell the roses, welcoming newcomers with helpful links, and fixing spelling/grammar errors when I'm reading through edits. Probably not the most effective use of my time, but hey, what else do I have to do? lol. ArielGold 20:57, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
Well... lol if you're serious, and have some time, I just love your user page! I tried to do a box layout on mine (check it out and see) but eh... it looked alright until I added the userboxes, but I love those, so now it just kind of looks... fair. I moved some user boxes down to the bottom area and have them hide-able, but the truth is I don't understand the script used here. Mostly I learn by copy/pasting, then changing to fit my personal needs, pretty much anything inside a {{}} and I'm clueless as to what it does, I just keep editing and editing until it looks good, or until I give up, lol. I love the four box layout you have, and the icons at the top (that I could figure out by looking at your page, though) I notice you're working on your IT, so I would imagine this is all second nature to you. lol. I'm working on my Master's in Psych, so programming-savvy I'm not! *laugh*.
It is bedtime for me right now (or will be soon) so it doesn't have to be today or anything, but maybe if you find yourself with time on your hands, and you're bored, you could shoot me a message. I can use MSN or IRC if you want, or just back and forth here (though that would mess up your talk page, I tend to type super fast and type like I speak/think so I'm long winded, sorry!) ArielGold 21:08, 27 July 2007 (UTC) ;)

I monitor from #vandalism-en-wp, and also idle in #countervandalism (irc.freenode.net) I don't have an AIM name, and really dislike IM programs anyway, I use MSN to talk to Elonka mostly, lol. I'll probably just look at your page's source and try and figure it out from there, I feel odd asking people I don't know for help. I must have the most edits to my user page of anyone, hee hee. But if you're ever bored and want to talk, you know where to find me in IRC now ;) ArielGold 21:16, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Replying here since this is more Admin type stuff

edit

I just rebooted, so hopefully the speed is better, it seems to be somewhat faster. (wish I remembered how to flush my IP thing in /command... but I haven't had to do that in so long I forgot how)

Sooo... Apologies in advance for the length.

I've been actively reading many many RfAs over the last couple weeks, but have so far not voted, until I get a more complete picture of the process and policies. I've got a pretty good grasp of the naming conventions, and AIV, as I've been using those a lot during RC/Vand watch, and I think I have a good handle on what constitutes CSDs. I've bookmarked all those pages, and the templates to use for CSD tags, for cleanup tags, bookmarked infoboxes for various categories, and I've reported a few user names that were obviously inappropriate. I'm less familiar with the AFD policy, (i.e. when a page isn't obviously CSD, what decides it should be deleted) what procedures to go through, steps, criteria, etc.

The entire process of mediation/arbitration has me most baffled, despite my attempts to understand it. For example, there is an issue on a living person that is heated on both sides, I got involved simply because I was on RC watch, and ended up getting involved deeper than I'd have liked, but I was trying to help. When I went to a third party for help and another view, her decision was fair and neutral, but the parties on both sides are still engaged in edit-warring back and forth. So, I've sent the issue to WP:BLP noticeboard, but it has not received any replies, and in the mean time, the edit wars continue. I've asked both sides to take their issue to the talk page of the article, but one of the sides seems to be unwilling to negotiate, and so it continues. This is where I'm unfamiliar with the proper procedures and processes. At what point does an issue get taken to Mediation? What is the difference between Mediation and Arbitration? What happens when the BLP noticeboard gets no response?

Honestly I want out of the entire situation, I do not feel my attempts at "mediation" have been successful, so I have removed the page from my watch list, and I've refrained from reverting edits back and forth, since doing so has no effect. Initially I followed the BLP guidelines, and after the issue "turned" (due to initial lack of references, (therefore should not have been included in the article, as it was defamatory and uncited) then later the reference was found, and thus the information no longer was speculative, so valid to be included. At least that is how I understood the BLP policies...) I did my best to remain neutral, striving to explain to all parties why my view changed. So I'm a bit frustrated with that.

I don't have a great background with political procedures overall, so a lot of things I do not understand well, I need a "Dummy Guide" lol. But I think those are the big things I've been struggling with understanding. (Well, and how to get a cool little "status" thing in the top right of my page to show when I am logged in, or sleeping; for the life of me after looking at tons of other user pages with it, I cannot figure out how that works! lol) ArielGold 14:27, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

First off, BLP is a very controversial area. There are areas generally so controversial, I find them counterproductive for me to get involved. It appears as though you have been doing your research! Good for you, that is a very desirable characteristic. You are already proving yourself as an asset to this project. In regards to changes in the status quo (in the example you cited above about finding references), that is what BLP polciies are for. Either s*** or get off the pot in other words. FInd a reference or remove it. Being a good editor means you need to be able to change your opinion and point of view when other circumstances change. This is an important part of being neutral because many editors cannot see past what they want. (for example, if an editor wants something removed from an article, they may use BLP as a platfrom to get it removed. Once an appropriate citation is found, they will still want it removed and will try to find another platform). On another note the cool little status thing at the top of your page is tied to your monobook.js page. I have not used one myself but give me a little bit of time and I will sort it out and help you set it up if you so desire. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 14:34, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
"Once an appropriate citation is found, they will still want it removed" Yes, that is exactly what is happening. The issue is the Mark Hudson page, and most of the details are on the talk page (by me). I asked Elonka to look into it after I met her, because she has had so much experience. I was completely supportive of her decision, and it was in line with what I'd said all along: If you can't cite the refs, don't add controversial info (sexual abuse allegations, unsourced). Once the references WERE found, then yes, they could be included (but as it was a 10 year old, small paragraph, one newspaper reference and no others sources, it should not take up the entire page), and I changed my mind.
While I see both sides, (one person claiming to be his daughter who is the person who continues to remove the info, and I initially agreed with her since info was un-sourced, and the other side was just saying 'read the book' was not good enough citation I felt), but now that the reference has been found, I've explained to her on her talk pages that it is valid to include it, as long as it uses the words "allegations" isn't worded in a defamatory way, and cites the source for others to form their own opinions. However, she continues to remove it, ignoring requests to discuss it on the talk page. All she says is "it doesn't matter if it is true, I am trying to make my own career and it needs to be removed". (Not a valid reason, for selective editing, IMO).
So, while I did try to help her before the info was cited, now that a reference is found, I do not deny it should be included in a modified form, but she's on a crusade, so I've simply decided to back down, I don't enjoy conflict, so I took it to the BLP board, which was the only thing I could think to do at that point. But my questions remain that at what point does an issue such as that get taken to mediation, or arbitration, and what is the difference? Do all BLP issues remain with BLP Noticeboard, and never go through mediation? I read the lamest edit wars article, to try to see what processes those items went through, but didn't get a lot of answers. (And that article is just hilarious, in a sad, pitiful sort of way... the things people will argue about! Omg...)
As for me reading up on all this before acting, well that's just how I am, I write columns for another site, and 100% of it is all research, so before I write, I have to dig. That just makes sense to me. And when I don't understand, I dig some more, and if I can't figure it out, I ask. Then I act. Even then, mistakes are sometimes made, but it is not for lack of trying, lol. I mean, it took me a good 2 years to really feel comfortable editing articles here. Yes, I'd edited some in 2005, but I wasn't comfortable with it, so mostly I just read, and I saw how others did it. Granted I'm still clueless about the scripting things, but I've got a good handle on how not to screw stuff up, lol. (indentations, anyone? :D)
Also, know that I am not bringing this to you for you to look into the issue, but simply to illustrate where I'm getting hung up as far as policies, and hopefully advice about how to better understand them. If you want to look into the issue, that's certainly fine and dandy with me, I'd love having an Admin step in and make a decision, but truly that's not why I mentioned it. It could have been a hypothetical issue and still been relevant to my frustrations with the policy. So don't feel like you have to :) ArielGold 14:49, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
The edit summary here should throw up red flags. I looked at it and think its current version seems pretty good to me. Removing something because IDONTLIKEIT is not an appropriate way to do it. If the editor removes the information again, feel free to let me know and I will start a discussion and if they choose to continue this disruptive behavior I will kindly issue them a short block so that they mayr ead up on our policies! -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 15:16, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Actually that revision is still missing the (cited) section that Elonka added in. See this revision at the bottom, under "controversy" where Elonka summarized the information, used the word "allegedly" and cited the sources. All of that has been removed, and it remains an edit war between the two parties reverting to the earlier version (that is uncited). Elonka's version should be what is there, the information is valid since it is sourced from the LA times (see talk page for her comments) and they continue to remove it. Give me a minute to re-review. By the way, i think I have the script set up for the busy, gone or here script. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 15:31, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Status script

edit

Omg if you could figure that out, you'd be my angel for the day!

lol. Of course, it is no wonder I couldn't figure it out if it is a monobook.js thing. I messed mine up so badly at one point I was a mess, lol. I think I have it correct now (I hope, at least most of the things work) but I'd absolutely love that script. I guess my question would be, is it set manually? Because I don't log out of Wikipedia, I just shut off my computer. It isn't a big deal to set it manually, but just wondering how that works. ArielGold 15:43, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

When I get it fine tuned, I will install it for you. what actually happens is it adds 3 new buttons to the top of your screen. You click either Online, Busy or OFfline and it automatically updates everything for you. I am still fine tuning it. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 15:44, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Omg cool! Can I pick out my own cute picture?
If possible:
Online: [[Image:Nuvola_apps_kuickshow.png|30px]]
Sleeping: [[Image:Nuvola_apps_kmoon.png|30px]]
Coffee break (busy):[[Image:Nuvola_apps_kteatime.png|30px]]
I don't know if that's how it works, if not, that's okay. I would assume there's at least one image that can be customized, because I've seen a variety of different ones.
I should be able to do that. I am still fiddling with the code. It will prob be an hour or so till I have it where I want it! -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:08, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

ROFL you're going above and beyond, dear! If you have other things to do, feel free to do them, seriously, lol. (But I totally do appreciate you doing it for me, even if you get it done today or later!)

Strange, I added it to a practice page, not my main page, and you still see it? Does it show up on every page? And holy wow, I just looked at the .js page, omg that's a lot of script, lmao. I thought it was something simple, I had been looking at this. Sheesh I never would have been able to do all that! Right now I'm struggling just to make my own award box, I can't get it to insert "subject" text like a warning does after the | mark thing, lol.
Thank you so much Chris, it looks awesome! You are great. And I'll keep you updated if the Mark Hudson page gets going again (seems to be daily edit wars, lol). <3 ArielGold 16:32, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
(P.S. is there a way to change the wording of "I am currently" ? I did a search for "currently" in the .js page but it isn't there.)ArielGold 16:32, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
All of the wording is in User:ArielGold/StatusDiv. You can change it there. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:33, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Question

edit

You said you weren't good at sig coding right? Well, I got a new sig and wondered if you'd like to copy from it? here's the code, just in case, and you can change it however you like (but I've changed it to fit you a little bit): <font face="Trebuchet MS"><b>[[User:Chrislk02|<span style="color:navy;">Chrislk02</span>]]</b> <small>(<font color="black"> [[User talk:Chrislk02|talk]]</font>•[[Special:Contributions/Chrislk02|<span style="color:black;">contribs</span>]])</small></font>

It produces:

Chrislk02 (talkcontribs)

You can change the colors, because I don't know your favorite colors, so change it however you like! jonjonbt (talkeditor review) 16:18, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Ill mull it over. I am a big fan of old school signatures (nothing fancy). I will think about it! Thanks for the work though, it is much appreciated. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:34, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

lol... whoooooosh!

"(Note the extra options are not functional because I borrowed code here)." Translation please, dear? lol That went right over my head.

(P.S. do you hate my Sig?  ) ArielGold 16:38, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm stubborn (Irish) so I just plug away replacing stuff till I get it right! *grin* I see you added one to your page too, cool! I'm still working on my box, lol. And I still want to know what you honestly think about my sig :p
P.P.S. Your page is scrolling funny! ArielGold 16:45, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Angel Award

edit
  Ariel's Angel of the Day
This Ariel's Angel award goes to Chris, for being my Angel of the Day! Thank you for helping me so much today, it was above and beyond the call, and I cannot express how much I appreciate it.
ArielGold
Hee hee, I'm glad you don't hate the sig, there are certainly some signatures out there that make even my eyes bleed (and I have a pretty high tolerance threshold for such things) so I wanted to be sure I wasn't one of them! *grin* ArielGold 17:58, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
P.S. This page is still scrolling horizontally! lol. As for your sig, one thing I really like is when people do double links, making it easier to get to their talk page, you could make your last name link to your talk page... just an idea! ArielGold 17:59, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

You've been loved by Jonjonbt

edit
Hey there! Jonjonbt has loved you by placing a heart icon in the top-right corner of your userpage. Don't worry, it's not vandalism, but simply a small way to spread the WikiLove. Remember to pass it on to all your friends by adding {{User:Arknascar44/Love Cabal}} to the top of their pages. Don't forget to add your name here! Love and best wishes, jonjonbt (talkeditor review) 17:24, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

also, no prob for the sig! jonjonbt (talkeditor review) 17:24, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank you! :)

Thank you for your beautiful words and warm wishes on my birthday, dear Mr. Kreider! I took a well-deserved one-day wikibreak and spent it with my family and my friends... and actually had a beer after months of forced abstinence! :) Of course, there's no way I'd forget about you, so I saved a great, tasty piece of chocolate cake just for you - but sorry, no beer left! Again, thank you so much for taking the time to wish me well, and have a wonderful day, my friend! Love, Phaedriel - 17:05, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

My dear Chris, how could I possibly "not" forgive the one and only Chris Kreider the cute? ;) Thank you tons for your beautiful wishes, and for your charming email, my friend! And I wear, this time, we won't remain apart for so long again... or I'll come straigth to your userpage and... well... I'll vandalize it again! ;) Tons of xxx, Sharon

Scrolling box

edit

I love the sig, yes I'm lazy, that saved me a click! YAY!

I use Firefox 2.0.0.5, and it is because of the box Jon put in when he added the script to do your sig, it causes this: (and for the life of me I can't figure out how to get "out" of the box! Argh!) If you were to remove the indentation, it should wrap, I think. I don't want to edit your page to fix it lol. (I'm using super high res 22" widescreen monitor, so if it wraps for me, someone using 800x1200 would have more ArielGold 18:12, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

(Because of the indentation (tab) placed before his <nowiki> tag, but the box won't wrap text.)

Nevermind *grin*

edit

You fixed it, lol ArielGold 18:14, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I think I fixed it. I am also using a fairly hi res (1280x1024) 21 inch monitor (not wide screen thouhg). Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:15, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Yep, working great now. Hey, quick question, are you able to compare users to see if one is another? Take a look at this Revision of a blocked user's page, with pretty profane additions. Is there a way to tell if it is the same person? ArielGold 18:25, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Only checkusers can do that. However, if edits are similar enough to pass the Duck test, then it is a good idea for them to get blocked. I will hvae a look. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:27, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Omg, rofl, "Duck Test" I have never heard of that wording before, that's hilarious! As for the user, it seemed to be his only contribution, so whether he's using another IP, or whatever is beyond me at this point, lol. Just seemed a bit suspicious, especially considering the original blocked username. ArielGold 18:32, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Yea, i use duck test when sorting out sock puppets. On an tangent note, it is a good idea to ask yourself, "how much damage is this causing" before determining if it is worth it to go sock hunting. There are some socks is is a good idea to weed them out, such as one i fought that created 100 new socks a day. Other ones, generally small, are best to treat them like regular vandals and WP:DENY them. I have throies about conditioning and wikipedia that we often condition the vandals to continue there work. Once there is no reward, they often stop. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:38, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
I'm still working on understanding Socks, and I fully understand WP:DFTT, so that is another reason I prefer to use my custom boxes when dealing with what is not obvious, profane, damaging vandalism. It sends a better "psychological" message, and discourages continued actions (hopefully!). But I'm not up to speed with the whole sock thing (nor do I even understand why anyone would do it, it doesn't make sense to me to create names, why are they not simply spoofing their IP?) so I have yet to really delve into that area of reporting. He seemed to have only done it once, and while it was a fairly nasty edit, I did revert it so no harm done. ArielGold 18:46, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Here is a little background on socks. There are generally 2 reasons why people creats socks. (there are of course more but these are the most popular). 1.) vote stacking in a vote or in attempts to reach a consensus. IP votes are genreally discounted so creation of a sock is the most common strategy here. 2.) ban or block evasion. Banned and blocked editors than can switch IP's often create socks to be disruptive. Of course they can edit under the IP instead of creating an account, however it only takes edits from 2-3 accounts before the ISP and IP range can generally be determined enabling a range block. (a block of for example, all IP's that may start with 123.123.xxx.xxx). In generall, IP address are a pretty bad way to go about vandalising and trying to game the system because it becomes alot easier to figure out who you are. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:51, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Hrmm, okay, I understand it better now. I thought in order to vote on stuff you had to be not only registered, but "established" (i.e. 100+ edits)? ArielGold 18:55, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

That is generally the case and that is when you get into sock farms. Some user may create 10 different alternate accounts. Edit to the 100 edit threshold then return to his primary account and have the socks waiting. These are often difficult, however there is almost always a motive for using a sock. If you sort out the motive and find the common ties, it is pretty easy to get caught. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:57, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
lol, I guess I just don't "think" as someone who would do something like that does. It still baffles me why people would want to circumvent the standards set in place. Sure makes things interesting I bet! (Not in a good way, though, unlike me, I'm interesting in a great way! Okay... annoying maybe, lol) ArielGold 19:08, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
You are far from annoying and very interesting in a good way. You add a lot to this project! It is a pleasure working with you. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:14, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
  • Blush* Thank you dear! I actually worry, because I completely want to learn, but I really feel bad asking others who are busy to help me when they have better things to do. But I have to say, sometimes there are just SO many policies, and guidelines, that it is very difficult to wade through them all to find an answer to one situation you may be having problems with. (Does that make any sense at all? Lol) Anyway, I do hope you don't get sick of me! *grin* ArielGold 21:04, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Naw, never get sick of ya. Also, that is why WP:BOLD and WP:AGF are important. It is easy to get tied up in the burecratic crap that it becomes too difficult to build an encylopedia. Read up on WP:BOLD and WP:IAR as they might help you get a cleare picture. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:07, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Yeah the IAR thing can come back to bite you in the rear later though, so I avoid that if at all possible, except where WP:UCS comes into play. But even then, it seems others can (and do) still use that as "proof" that you're wrong. *shrug*.
As for AGF, I do that always, (in fact I'd guess I do it more than most people do,) with any "page blanking", instead of just using a pre-formatted warn, I use a friendly box with a cute picture that conveys that (in my opinion) they probably didn't intend to do it, and give helpful links. And as pictured with the Mark Hudson issue, I assumed good faith on both sides, and only changed opinions when evidence was presented that validated it.
I'd like to think I'm a pretty even-keeled, fair person. I think the big thing for me is simple frustration from just lack of some foundational knowledge, and I'm digging through all the policies daily so hey, lol. Still, (yes, I know I know, "God she talks a lot!") it is nice to have a "real" person to ask when I run up against a wall, or have problems understanding things like scripting stuff, so again, just know how much I appreciate your help, and your continued offers of help, more than you probably think.  ArielGold 21:22, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi. In view of your recent block/unblock of Wrestlinglover420, maybe you want to take a look at Lord Sinestro (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)? That user was blocked as a sock of Wrestlinglover420 and now requests unblock. I guess you are best qualified to determine what should be done. Sandstein 19:43, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I am looking into it. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 19:56, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I promise that i havent made a sock puppet since you banned me 3 months ago.Wrestlinglover420 19:59, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

While I can find no evidence, i have asked yamla, the blocking administrator for any insight. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:20, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
I'm also curious to what Yamla and Kafziel (if he were here) would have said. Although there is no direct confirmation of Wrestlinglover420 being tied to these sockpuppets, what gives them away is roughly their edits, the way they sign their posts, the rash tone of voice in their comments and the pages they usually contribute to. I suppose we'll have to hear Yamla's side of the story to resolve something. Even the sockpuppeteer tag was removed by Wrestlinglover, which I disagree with, but at the same time am curious at what will happen next. That's all. Lord Sesshomaru
I will tell you right out that Lord Sinestro will come out   Confirmed if you ask for a checkuser between him and User:BlueShrek. Or, for that matter, him and User:TheManWhoLaughs. --jpgordon∇∆∇∆ 21:45, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Chris, are you 100% sure you want to let Wrestlinglover loose? I'd suggest a CheckUser, but it seems Wrestlinglover is using a stale ip to separate himself from the other socks so that'd be pointless. I'll ask Yamla to maybe help you reconsider your decision. Lord Sesshomaru
Thanks for the info on Lord SInestro, I have declined his unblock. As of now, I stand by wrestlinglover420's unblock. I will watch him and have given him a warning that he is under scrutiny and any innapropriate action will quickly lead to a block. Thanks for expressing your concern though, I will take that into consideration when dealing further with WL420. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 23:58, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Psssst...

edit

When (if) you get un-busy, and you're bored, I could use your wisdom, oh Great One.   ArielGold 14:23, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Okay, done! :D Alright, today's lesson: Images. I see constantly, on so many pages, these "free use" (and many other) notices put there by a variety of people. Now, I do know where to look for the information on what "free use" is, and the guidelines for images, etc. But that's not my question. My question is, how do the people who are putting the notices on talk pages: A.) Know that images were uploaded, and B. Know so dang quickly (within seconds) that they aren't acceptable images. How do people know if something is original or not, and how do they determine what copyright violation applies when it is obviously not original? I guess my misunderstanding of it goes beyond that, but I'm not able to formulate what questions would help me, at this point. (And, you know, if you don't want to play "Adopter" to me, feel free to let me know, lol.)
Lol I used the term "Adopter" as a joke, but hey... it seems like that's what you're already doing, you and DerHexer both have helped me so much lately, I appreciate it greatly, and just hope you both don't get sick to death of me, lol.
Alright. I admit, most of the "legal jargon" of the Fair Use, and WP:FUC (you'd think that would get renamed lol) pages goes over my head at this point. I will try to re-read them a few times to see how much can get through, lol. But what you explained helps some. I understand the basics of some stuff, like, obviously you can't use the NASA logo, because it specifically states you may never reproduce it anywhere, for any reason. However, you're free to use all OTHER images, anywhere on NASA's site, anywhere you want. (I like cut-and-dry issues like that, lol)
So that brings me to the thing you said about issues such as images of dead persons (where it is not possible to get an original image). Why are the Ansel Adams prints allowed? Some of those are even featured images. Yes, he's dead, but the subject of the pictures (landscapes) are still there, and available for "original" imaging, yes?
Another question is, how are these people who ARE posting notices, finding out when someone is uploading an image? For example, I have links that will take me to new users, newest contributions (obvious, recent changes), and to other "log" type pages that help me (blocked users, deleted pages, etc.) but I have not yet found anything like that for images. Does such a page exist? I see people being chided for "not participating enough in the area of images" and so today my goal was to learn more about it. I've only uploaded one image (that I took personally, and I put the notice thingy in it, hopefully correctly, and it is used in an article). ArielGold 15:20, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

P.S. Feel free to answer here, lol. ArielGold 15:25, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Ok, I will respond here. First off, in regards to the NASA Logo. Yes, it can be used. ANy copyrighted image can be used under fair use if it meets the criteria, that is what is is for. Ask yourself, is it possible to create the nasa image yourself with infringing on the copyright? No you cant. The image Image:Logo-nasa-800px.png is actually a bad example because it claims fair use however does not provide the fair use rationale (an detailed explanation as to why it qualifies as fair use and where it will be used). In regards to Ansel Adams, it appears he was doing his work while working for the government which usually means it is in the public domain as see explained Image:Adams Leaf In Glacier National Park.jpg in the image licensing information. In regards to how people are finding uploads so quickly, there is an upload log located here. Hope I answered all the questions. If I missed an answer, please let me know. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:31, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Hrmm, that's interesting about the NASA logo. The warnings on their page seemed so clear cut, lol. I guess it is unclear to me the differences between (and interactions of) "fair use" and "copyright infringement" (due to my near nothing legal knowledge, lol). Re: Ansel Adams, okay that makes sense to me. So, if I were to wish to help with image violations, what would you suggest my first step be, to simply tag any images that have absolutely NO explanations/tags whatsoever, and what template would be appropriate for the talk page of the contributor? And, thank you so much for the log link! That is exactly what I've been searching for for days!   ArielGold 16:40, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

I honsetly can be of little help with image tagging. It is an area I stay far away from. I would rather help editors find sources, and provide fair use raitonale for them then throw confusing templates at them, and delete there images. That is me though, there is a strong movement of editors who strongly disagree with me. My reccomendation, watch what others are doing, find the templates used and ask before you nominate something for deletion unless it is blatant copy vio. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:43, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Hrmm, okie dokie. :) Gee, I can't think of anything else to bug you about. Darn. :p ArielGold 16:48, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Hrmmm...

edit

How open are you to letting me fix something on one of your pages? lol. (Yes I'm Type A and I know it.) ArielGold 18:56, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Go for it, I am type A too. What is it? Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:57, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Done. Check and see. lol. (I'm sure it was just oversight.)  ArielGold 19:01, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
I saw the change. Looks good! What actually happens is I think much faster than I can type. It often leads to stupid typos that I forget to slow down and re-read over and correct. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 19:02, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Hee hee, yeah I've seen a couple, I don't worry about those on talk pages, but I thought you'd probably want that one page fixed, but I definitely wanted to ask first. Have you ever seen the TV show "Monk"? I wouldn't go so far as to say that's me, but... let's just say, that page would have bugged the heck out of me, until either I fixed it, or you did, lol. (Yes, I know I know, lol.) It could be worse, I'm not a complete "clean" freak, (I can leave one tea cup in the sink... for a couple hours. lol) seriously though, nah I'm not compulsive about some stuff, but I really am about other things, mostly little stuff. Hey, do you use MSN or anything like that? (Because I junk up your talk page with so much irrelevant information, lol) ArielGold 19:07, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

I use AIM when I am at my apartment. Here, wiki and email are my only two communication mediums. I LOVE monk, i tis one of my favorite shows. I am sometimes a clean freak it depends though on what is going on. I am pretty good at prioritizing things so if it is important to clean, I am very good at it. Otherwise, it often piles up. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 19:10, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Monk is one of my all time favorite shows too, and I have all the books, as well, lol. Where are you now that you're not at your apartment? Drop me an email with your MSN if you want, and I can send you mine to add when you get back to your apartment. (When?) ArielGold 19:12, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
I may or may not be at work. I am nto sure what my MSN name is, I have one because i sometimes play msn games online (settler of catan). I will email it to you when I get back (around 5:30) eastern time or so.

Ohhh, that "work" thing people speak of.   Hey, did you know there is no Flag of New Orleans on Wikimedia!? How is that possible? Maybe I'm just blind, but I can't find it... ArielGold 19:17, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Image:New Orleans, Louisiana flag.svg. is that what you were looking for? Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 19:19, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
But new orleans is not a state? I am guessing you want it for here. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 19:20, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I'm stupid. *Smacks head* I know it isn't a state, lol. I'm just getting senile. Thank you. ArielGold 19:23, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

P.S. Look at that page now and tell me what you think. Wiki-linked all the states. (I would have made the links from clicking on the image, but I don't know how lol.)ArielGold 19:25, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Looks good. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 19:25, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
By the way, feel free to dump/archive all the stuff I've cluttered your talk page with lol. ArielGold
It is no problem. I archive linearly anyways. I will prob make an archive run tomorrow as it is the first of the month. I dont like auto archivers because I feel I may miss something important. I think there is often too much of a focus on making everything automatic when all it needs is a human touch. Well, enough of that tangent. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 19:31, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Heheh, I have a disorganized archiving process I guess, but never had any real reason to do so until lately. I keep the things that make me happy. :) How's that for a human touch? lmao. ArielGold 19:33, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Okay, I've been worrying about this for a day+ now (seems like more since my sleep schedule is such that I posted it two "days" ago). I don't want to bug her, but I really feel horrible, and I don't know if that got lost in the massive amounts of messages she gets (she's so lucky!) and she never saw/read it. I'm worried.   ArielGold 19:58, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Dont worry about it at all. She is generally very busy and gets to everybody in there own time! I am sure she does not care that youi borrowed the userpage! Dont stress it! Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:01, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

I kinda can't really help it. I know she's way busy, and I'm overly sensitive to other people's feelings maybe, but if it at all bothers her, (and I didn't even think about it before doing it which is what bothers me most) I'd remove it. In fact, I completely considered removing it until hearing back from her. I just want to know she's okay with it, and isn't offended or upset with me. *sigh*. ArielGold 20:06, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

I have worked with her enough. Dont worry about it at all! Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:08, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Easy for you to tell me, not so easy for me to do, until she tells me. (And that doesn't mean I don't trust you, I absolutely do, it is just me....) ArielGold

Check this please if you have a second, and look at the versions. Copy/pasted from Wiki articles. Yeah it is a user page, but ... does copyright stuff fall into that area? Can we copy full Wiki articles into our talk pages? Especially ones that invite vandalism like this one is doing? history I have no idea what actions should be taken, if any, in that situation. (reporting? reverting? CSD request?) Thanks! ArielGold 20:32, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

User appears to be expirementing. As long as it is not the recreation of a deleted article, there appears to be no issue. Just make sure none of the images are fair use. If they are, explain what the problem is, be bold and remove them. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:34, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
lol I don't have a firm enough grasp of the whole fair use thing to judge, so I'll leave it be and not worry about it. Thanks! ArielGold 20:42, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
In short and in general. If the image is in anyways copyrighted, it should not be in the userspace. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:42, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I guess therein lies my problem. Unlike googling text, I don't see any possible way to know if any image is copyrighted (aside from guessing). ArielGold 20:52, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Oh, I understand what you are saying! Let me explain. For example, Image:Logo-nasa-800px.png. read the image description and you will see the giant red C. That means it is copyrighted and unacceptable outside of fair use. Image:Chrislk02workcenter.JPG, this image has a licnese tag for GFDL which is an appropriate license. SImilarly, Image:USS hunchback.jpg is in the public domain which means it is ok to use. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:56, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Okay, but what about someone who just puts a GFDL tag on it, even though it may be copyrighted? Or, what about images with no tags at all, how would someone go about researching what category they fall under? See where I'm getting bogged down? lol. And that really is you? You remind me of someone, I can't think who... you should let me fix the red eye! lol. (I'm a Photoshop expert). :) ArielGold 21:01, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Please do fix the red eye. That really is me but not that great a pictures. False licensing is a problem here. Fortunatley, people good at it can spot suspicious license tags. For example, an obvious promotional picture of a celebrity tagged as public domain with no source or meta data is very suspicios. There are many different cues you can look at to determine suspicious licenses. THen, do a google search and see if you find the image? If you do and the licneses dont match, you remove it from the article and tag the image for deletion. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:03, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
lol, I'll leave that to the Image experts. I'll get you a non-red eye picture in a few. ArielGold 21:05, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Yep, unfortunately, that's where I currently live (AKA Nowhereseville). However, my soul, and heart live in Colorado. I consider that my home. Someday I'll get back (ala Dorothy). Emailing you location of images. I'll let you choose which to upload. ArielGold 21:36, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Wrestlinglover420

edit

Thanks for commenting there. He reverted again here and again here. And this message is like one I've seen before from BlueShrek and McBanne420; he replies that I'm trying to get him blocked him "again", although I've never spoken to this user (except his socks) before. Kinda contradictive if you ask me, can you revert his unconstructive edits to Detective Chimp and Phantom Stranger? Lord Sesshomaru

You sure are nice to him, a re-block of a week instead of a ban. Now, at this point, he's pushing our buttons and being ignorant. Just give him a very last warning and if he screws up again, block him indef.; we'll begin that community ban on him and his socks if he continues. Lord Sesshomaru
Let me work with him. Hold off the pitchforks and torches! I like to make sure every last avenue has been expended before indef banning somebody. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:45, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Chris, we explored about 6 half-dozen and one options with this guy, and he continuously created socks, then denied it each time. I say one more (even the slighest) sign of not WP:AGF or uncivil behavior anywhere at anytime about anything and the indef. block should be immediately put back on. You are, in all honesty, showing way more patience and giving way more chances than I think you should, but that's just my two cents. If he turns things around, good for him, but I think you were generous in unblocking him and if he even twitches slightly the wrong way, you should re-block him indef. Bmg916Speak 18:57, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
I will be closley watching him. Thank you for the input. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:59, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
While not necessarily mitigating, please take a look at his recent editor history. He does have some good edits (i.e., he is not soley engaging in disruptive behavior). Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 19:00, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
The point is, you're being way, way too lenient wth this particular user. I'll have to agree with Bmg916 all the way, if he as much as does another mess-up for no reason (like he did with me) just block him and we'll have him banned. Simple. Oh I'll sign with four tildes on your talk page as you mentioned. Lord Sesshomaru 19:21, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

←Thanks for signing with 4 tildes. I am currently reviewing his entire history right now. Please trust me on this, i am very careful to block indef ONLY when i am 100% sure than an editor causes more harm than good to this project. I take alot of stuff into account before doing this. Again, I ask that you trust me on this one! Thanks.Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 19:23, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

No prob. Just don't be too nice with these people from here on. It kind of pisses me off but I now trust what you're doing. Cheers! Lord Sesshomaru 19:27, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
All suspected socks of Wrestlinglover420 (when he was banned) would remove comments / warnings by other users (often mine) and call them things like "harrassment" or "troll comments" in his edit summaries. Here are some clues: TheClownPrinceofCrime [4], TheManWhoLaughs [5], [6], BlueShrek [7],[8], and McBane420 [9] — TheClownPrinceofCrime removed the comments except didn't leave an edit summary. Lord Sesshomaru 21:07, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
That is a suprisingly naturally response. I have seen MANY editors do that and I am sure they are unrelated. WHile I feel WL420 is on the road to a permaban, the edits shown are not enough in my opinion to prove sockpuppetry. He is on his last warning so we will see where that goes. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:09, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Do you feel Yamla was wrong then to call most of them socks of Wrestlinglover420 in their block logs? Kafziel did the same, except he said in their block logs "Abusing multiple accounts". You should trust us users who've dealt with him; if you really looked further into their edits, there is a pattern; all of them edit Dragon Ball-related pages, comic book-related pages, video game-related pages, and wrestling-related pages. IMO, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that its the exact same person. Then again, its always safer to confirm by CheckUser, though that can't rule out meatpuppets, which is tiresome in this case due to them having dynamic ips. Lord Sesshomaru 21:28, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Naw, neither Yamla nor Kafizel were wrong. It is very possible and actually likley that WL420 is abusing multiple accounts. However, lacking hard evidence. I want to make sure all the t's are crossed and i's dotted. I understand your concerns but, i am sure if you looked at all of those pages, there are tones of 14 year old kids who only edit those pages. I would be more concerned if they all edited a much smaller niche area like all edited on a specific highschool, or small no-name town. Yamla agreed with my unblocking so lets just see where it goes. He is not causing any irreversable damage right now other than a minor irritation (which I am aware of). I assure you this will be dealt with in the way that best suits this project. Thank you for your concerns, they really are appreciated, I am glad you are such a dedicated editor. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:33, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Chris, I just want to stait that im glad your helping me try to stay on here and whyll i know ive kinda warred recent you gotta remember ive been gone a while. Sess i gotta say that from what ive read from my supposed "socks" you harrass alot yourself and i know that you are going on a one man vendetta to try to get me blocked and the fact that you would do that not only hurts, but i think is completely unprofessional. Were here to have fun and edit factual information not try and be mean. Thank you once again Chris.Wrestlinglover420 02:41, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

On the contrary. I have gone on anything but, as you say, "a one man vendetta to try to get me blocked." You can ask anybody on here and they will say I have given you more of a chance than they would have. It has nothing to do with trying to get you blocked, it has everything to do with my experience, unless you seriously clean up your game, you will. I have actually underwent extreme scrutiny in your unblock and have sevearl people asking that I re-block you because of all the problems you have caused. Before you start accusing me of being out to get you, I reccomend you review the facts. Thanks! Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 11:46, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

edit

Can you please tell him to stop coming to my talk page for no reason, see [10], [11], [12], [13], [14]. He leaves unnecessary messages on my talk page (exactly like his sock trolls have done) to get me to answer for the sake of it. Frankly, I don't care whether he wants to be my friend or not, all I ask is for him to stop going there for nothing, unless it is of some importance. If you could relay a message /warning to him I'll be content. Lord Sesshomaru 18:37, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

I am sorry that you feel you must take that approach. I cannot discourage him from talking on your page as it may discourage engaging in discourse when the time comes. Also, as far as I am concerned, an apology is not trolling and is also not pointless. Please make an effort here. Thanks! Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:39, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Well, I apologized and refactored my comments that were uncivil. I certainly hope WL appreciates the limb you are going out on for him. I hope (against experience) he is able to adjust his behavior. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 18:47, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Thank you very much. Well see how it goes and the only way to see is to give it a shot! Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:47, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Ok Chris, let's drop it now between us and move on. I'll accept his comments so long as they're not "trollish" like the same ones his supposed socks have done to me in the past. You must know by now that my patience has reached its limit, sorry but you're like the only one who supports him, if I were a sysop I strongly doubt he'd be doing this. But like I've said, let bygones be bygones for the time being and move on. Lord Sesshomaru 18:49, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
I have no bygones here. However, I do understand your concern and am taking special note of communications between the two. Trust me, you are part of the equation as I weigh the pro's and con's as this situation progresses. it is a giant dynamic system, with everything in flux. Please have patience while we work through it and thank you for your patience so far. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:51, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Help

Chris im trying not to edit war so im comign to you for help. On Dc Countdown information is repeated about the back of the issue story. Sess then comes along and reverts my edits and isnt offering to explain it. Im afraid to contact him because of the way he has been acting towards me. As a admin will you step in? Thanks.Wrestlinglover420 21:59, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Calm down, the explanation is right here. When I said discuss, I meant for you WL420 to bring it up on the talk page of that article. Lord Sesshomaru 22:04, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Chris, since the talk page is completely protected, can you place a {{sockpuppet|TheManWhoLaughs|confirmed|evidence={{{evidence|[[Special:Contributions/{{PAGENAME}}|contributions]]}}}}} on McBane420's talk page? I've gotten the other socks by TheManWhoLaughs, this is just so the tagging of user pages / user talk pages are consistent with each other as they have been done to the WL420 socks. Thanks. Lord Sesshomaru 22:52, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

List of British flags this editor User:Astrotrain is repeatly inserting false information into this article, the Ulster Banner is not a current National flag, he claims he has consensus for these changes from Talk:Northern Ireland the discussion there is ongoing and is in relation to the infobox on that article only. This user repeatly ignores the discussions on the talk pages of articles and has been involved in and blocked 6 times since January for disruptive editing and making personal attacks both against me other editors.--padraig 12:54, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

I havn't added any false information- sources have been added for all statements. Please discuss on the talk page for Northern Ireland rather edit war. Hopefully we can then get along. Astrotrain 12:57, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

The edit history of you edit in your contributions shows your edit warring, so doe's your block log, The Ulster banner is not a current national flag it is not even recognised by the British Government or the Northern Ireland Assembly and it Executive, nor does it have de facto status as it hasn't officialy existed since 1973 when the government it was the government banner of was abolished.--padraig 13:03, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
I am sorry but this is an edit war I choose not to get involved in. Please file an RFC or puruse formal dispute resolution. (I would but I have limited time for the next week and cannot devote my full resources to resolving the dispute.Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 13:10, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Ok Chrislko2, I am not sure of the details of how RFC works but will have a look into, I see Astrotrain deleted your comment he had no right to do that.--padraig 13:23, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Sorry Chris- not sure how I managed to delete your comment. Apologies. Astrotrain 14:02, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Chrislk02/archive06, I lefted a request for you at this section. I can ask Kafziel to do it if you feel uncomfortable going, though I don't see why you wouldn't pursue. Lord Sesshomaru 14:53, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for that unprotection, could you see if you could format Habitat? I'm unsure on how to go about that. Lord Sesshomaru

Re: Tro**

edit

It isn't a personal attack if that's what you're thinking, familiarize yourself with WP:TROLL. The user is quite suspicious, he has done edits that were obviously unconstructive yet shares a vast knowledge of the Wikipedia. Maybe you can talk to him and help him straighten his act before he is blocked. How about that Habitat article? Lord Sesshomaru 17:49, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

I am very familiar with WP:TROLL which explicitley states, " refers to deliberate and intentional attempts to disrupt the usability of Wikipedia for its editors, administrators, developers, and other people who work to create content for and help run Wikipedia" Removing a comment from an editor asking a question is none of the above. I also perused flossy411 edits and offered to help. comments like this are not attacks, however a sign of a new scared editor who is trying to sort things out. All i kindly ask is that you NOT use the term troll lightly. I have also npot accused you of Personal Attacks. I looked at the article and am unsure of what you want me to do with it? Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:51, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I reinserted the warning because I went by this. Thought it was vandalism because I saw that the user ustilised some tool (VP?) to revert and instead I just undid it, seeing as I don't use a tool. Lord Sesshomaru 17:54, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
It is last I knew a debated topic, however as far as I know, it is considered edit warring (not exempt as vandalism), and it is generally harrasing. I understand where most editors come from, thinking a vandal may avoid a block because an admin missed the warnings, but we check those things generally. Thanks for taking the time to address the issue at hand, it is much aprpeciated. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:57, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
(edit conflict) - I'll limit the use of the word "troll" if that's what you're asking. I asked earlier if you can format the Habitat page, which I couldn't do right. Lord Sesshomaru 17:59, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
I assure you I did not ignore your request. I looked at the page and did not see any formatting problems? Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:01, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Oh, never mind. Usually people miss my comments by accident, thought that was the case here. Lord Sesshomaru 18:06, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
My apologies. I will be more dilligent in keeping you up to date! Thanks. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:08, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

It appears that is what the community feels as well, looking at the comments on the deletion discussion. There is nothing that really can be done until the articles for deletion discussion is over. However, it looks like it wont get deleted in my opinion. Hope that helps! Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:06, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Chris, there is a user who refuses to provide sources for his contributions, primarily on the Kawasaki Ki-61 and Kawasaki Ki-100 pages. User:Stefanomencarelli is apparently under a block on the Italian WIki for the same reasons, and so came here. THis has all the appeareances of just an edit war, but he consistently refuse to provide proper sourcing. If you want to get involved, fine, but what I'm asking for is where I go to report a consistent copyvio-abuser? I know this is something the Foundation takes seriously. Thanks. - BillCJ 18:17, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Post a thread at WP:ANI. I would help but im ou my way out to play 18 holes! Yes, copyvio are a big ordeal. On your post to ANI, provide diffs to the edits the editor is making, and a link to orignial source(s). Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:24, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

That's good that you had a nice weekend. :) Did you get to go golfing or did you get rained out? ArielGold 17:29, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Yep! Got my golf in. I was more concered about diing of heat stroke then getting rained out. Did you have a good weekend? Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:30, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Um... it was a period of two days... *shrug* I actually thought that Friday was Thursday, until I realized it wasn't, so today seems like Sunday... if that makes sense. lol. I did, however, notice something missing, so I'm glad it is Monday.   ArielGold 17:33, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Malamockq

edit

What I find interesting is that this user was involved in a recent CU case, see Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/BlueShrek; the user Malamockq (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log) went to my talk page and "warned" me for vandalism. How is my good faith edit vandalism that he had to undo it like so? Lord Sesshomaru 15:39, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

I gave them a warning. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 15:57, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
I'm surprised about that CU case. I was not notified about that at all, nor am I BlueShrek. You can check the ip's. I warned Sesshomaru for deleting the suggested move box at the top of the talk page for Cricket. Can be seen here, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3ACricket&diff=149389102&oldid=149252869 He gave no rationale for removing the box, as the discussion was still ongoing. I took this as vandalism. I'm also surprised you decided to warn me with a block without discussing and learning both sides to this issue. I find that in bad taste. If he removes the box again, it will be considered vandalism and I will bring it up with an administrator. Malamockq 16:54, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
He did not remove it, however moved it down below the skip to TOC header as seen here. I apologize if I was hasty in my warning as I find that the word vandalism is overused, and extremely offensive when a good faith editor is called a vandal. I kindly ask that you check and double check any diffs before warning another editor of vandalism, and even them, confront them about it before making such a claim. Thanks! Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 16:57, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
I didn't notice that. It's not vandalism in that case, but I'm not sure what the point of that was. The guidelines to moving a topic indicate that the move box must be placed at the top of the talk page. I would like it to remain at the top of the page. Malamockq
That is ok and I dont have strong feelings either way. I feel that the skip to TOC bar is used to skip all the the possible norices at the top of a page. I personally think it should go above the talk page haeder and below toe skip to TOC bar but in the overall scheme I am indifferent. Thank you for looking into the issue, it is much appreciated and I apologize again if I jumped the gun on the warning. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:05, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the barnstar. I appreciate it. :) Malamockq 18:04, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

<unwantedopinion> I'd personally put in a section for Homework/Current assignments, that would be easy enough to change around that she could update it in 10-15 minutes a day with useful links on the subject and reminders. And put it as a big green button on the main page. Other than that, it's simple, but simple is good </unwantedopinion> --L-- 23:54, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Well, it has a hard-to-use wizard so we pretty much HAVE to make it simple. I would make it awesome if I could, but it's sorta hard. Sorry!  Jonjonbt 01:20, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Are you around, my dear? I have a question for ye! ArielGold 00:25, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

I am here now. Sorry, I was at a meeting. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 02:15, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Hee hee, no biggie, hope you had fun! Here's my question: User names: I notice there are no specific policies related to drug-type nicknames, are things like that allowed? Like, can someone get away with the user name Heroin? (for example, just hypothetical).ArielGold 02:32, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
I bet the username would be ok in itself. If it started getting into, "I user heroin" or "i like crack cocaine" or something of the sort, I am pretty sure they would be subject to being prohibited. Overall I am pretty sure it would be up to the discretion of the blocking admin. (In other words, cant hurt to list it at WP:UAA). Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 02:34, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

So, something like Narkotix would be fine? Are there any policies relating to drug paraphernalia? I didn't report anything, I just am curious as to the policy regarding this. I have seen someone named Bong(something) so I assume the rules, if they do exist, are pretty loose? ArielGold 02:35, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Yea. The somewhat sad fact is you would be more likely to get away with a user name with drug paraphernalia in it then with a reference to Jesus or God. Thats the way it goes! Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 02:39, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Odd, okay thanks! ArielGold 02:41, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Blanking refs

edit

Pardon me, but was this a good faith edit by Wrestlinglover420? I do not understand why he removed the reference to the Ultimates along with the ign link. Looks like vandalism to me, BlueShrek and McBane420 once did do the same by blanking sourced information from articles. Can you look into it? Lord Sesshomaru 14:03, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Because I though that solicts werent RS. Whatever.Wrestlinglover420 15:00, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Chris, have you read WL420's edit summaries? I feel somewhat bothered by them, and there doesn't seem to be a warning template that encourages users to leave civil edit summaries. I'd warn him if I came across a template as such. Coming from a user with a very bad past, I just see no reason for comments like those. Just bringing it to your attention, Cheers. Lord Sesshomaru 18:18, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Chris can you do something about Sess and his continuing harrassment of me and my edits? Im giving him his space and staying clear of him but it seems like every chance he gets he tries to ge me in trouble. Can you please stop him?Wrestlinglover420 18:32, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

He is entitled to express his concerns. I however review everything independantly before making an a comment. I appreciate your efforts to use edit summaries. Thanks for making the effort. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 18:57, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Re: Concerns

edit

I don't generally remove comments, your case is no different than others. However, keeping them in links is a preference. Further, you and I both know that harassment is clearly defined as: "a pattern of offensive behavior that appears to a reasonable observer to have the purpose of adversely affecting a targeted person or persons, usually (but not always) for the purpose of threatening or intimidating the primary target." This behaviour, towards WL420, I don't perform. It isn't difficult for him to leave nicer edit summaries, usually writing in ALL CAPS tends to fuel some flames. I disagree with his edit summaries, that's all. Your leniency with this user is beyond what I expected. Honestly, you give him a chance too many, but that's not my call. Again, I won't remove your comment since you sort of have a point now. The last time, I felt you were giving him too much fire and I had no tolerance for responding to [any of] that. Your reply: " I am sure you will erase this message as you erase all of my concerns" is also untrue — one of your concerns is archived in one of my talk pages. I have a few more things to say:

  1. What are you basing my "dickish" behaviour towards WL420 on? Speculation?
  2. Didn't you say yourself that warnings / comments can be removed after they've been read? See [16] & [17]
  3. You told him to leave an edit summary for his undo revisions. You did not tell him to leave a civil edit summary, see [18]
My point being, not that I'm partaking any administrative enforcement, I'm going to always be strict with users like this (especially those who pissed me off in the past), as you should also not be "too forgiving". I don't think being very nice will solve anything. In spite of every very nice chance you gave to him, he hasn't proved that he changed anyhow, IMO. If he continues with the ALL CAPS / almost incivil edit summaries, I'll simply leave it to you to decide. Being dickish is one thing, rigorously nice, which I'm doing my very best to act towards him, is another. Lord Sesshomaru 20:08, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
I kindly ask that you review his edits. He has many valid edits. In short, He is adding positive content to this project despite his problems with attitude and demeanor. I would block him in a second if he were vandalising, or I felt he had ill or nefarious intent. the fact is, nothing I have seen leads me to believe he is intentionally here to cause trouble to this project. We all occasionally have edit summaries with all caps, the fact is he was leaving them. he was making the effort to comply. That is all I look for. He he making the effort to change. I recognize that not all people have a naturally calm or even temper. When people get riled up, it is often because they are passionate about something, not because they want to be assholes. I have been carefully observing his behavior and have every reason to believe most of what he does is in Good faith. Sure he needs some pointing in the right direction, which I plan on helping with (and offer you the opportunity to do the same). I reccomend you get the chip off your shouder regaring "(especially those who pissed me off in the past), ". Hodling grudges over past actions will do no good and only serve to drag you and those around you down. Be forgiving, give another chance and ask yourself, is the overall bad being done here worse than the good? Remeber our ultimate goal is to build an encylopedia. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 20:25, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Believe me when I say that I'm watching him 24/7, so reviewing his edits now is pointless. I'm unsure that you're watching him very carefully though; some of the time I'm the one who notifies you of his suspicious edits, like when he randomly removes citations. Guess I'll stop holding a grudge, though putting the past behind you isn't easy, not to me that is. Thing is, I'll feel like a complete idiot if I apologize. Don't ask why, it's just that I can't apologize to a person who does careless mistakes every once in a while. Please understand where I'm coming from with this. Thanks. Lord Sesshomaru 20:47, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
I do understand where you are coming from. It is difficult to put the past behind you. Thank you for taking the time to address this, it is very much appreciated! Happy editing. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 21:00, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

A mean reply?

edit

Another user I've been keeping an eye on ever since he was involved in Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/BlueShrek, Uglyguy2006 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log), has lefted this response to an anon. I'm having a hard time figuring out if incivility against users who haven't edited the Wikipedia for a year or two is acceptable. I would assume not, you never really know if they're still around or not. Here were the most impolite statements in his reply that I saw: "... Freeza is probably the best example of a sadist in Dragon Ball, simp,ly because it is so apparent of his cruelty, and what you seem to be doing is comparing all the noted villains to Freeza is again, frankly, quite stupid. You seem not to understand what a sadist is so to clarify it for you, A sadist is one who delights in the pain of others. Read a dictionary once in a while, or better yet an encyclopedia. Maybe you should try Wikipedia". What do you see in this comment of his? Lord Sesshomaru 00:19, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Well, and than I lost H.O, and got blocked for a month with my IP-adress. Know, I want to clear my name, and apologize to all people who where envolved in this matter. So here it comes; Sory for what I did, I hope you can forgive me for my sockpuppetry...

This user is requesting an unblock. In your block-reason you state that this user is a sock but you give zero details as to how you come to this conclusion. Some details would be appreciated so I can fully evaluate this unblock request. Jimmy Page

edit

Hi, I noticed you blocked a user for edit warring on the Jimmy Page article. Although I agree that the block was more than justified I can't understand why you didn't block the other main party in the war - the anon user with the ips that start 156.34 - he made no less than 17 reverts in a 24 hour period on that article. If you are in any doubt that these are all the same user click on the Whois link on their talk pages and you'll see they all work for Aliant Telecom. If you look at the Eagles and Don Henley pages you will also see a pattern of edit warring there and if you go to here [19] you'll see he even changes ip address mid-conversation sometimes. Although I'm sure this user thinks he's acting in the best interests of WP I do think he needs to use the Talk pages more to discuss controversial changes rather than edit warring. I have tried in vain to explain this to him. Kelpin 12:47, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

It is harder to enforce it against IP's that change. If he changes once, generally means he can change as many times as he wants. I could have used a /16 range block but that would have the possibility to leave a huige swatch of collateral damage. If page protection had been requested, I probably would have been glad to do that. Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 13:06, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
OK thanks, I will bear that in mind for the future. Kelpin 16:46, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Relatedly, you are to be commended, IMHO, for your reaction to Defender's essentially innocuous use of the machine gun image in reply to your suggestion with respect to dealing with criticism; there are some who would have (mis)taken that as disruptive, threatening, incivil, attacking, etc., or (perhaps slightly more accurately) as reflective of an acollegial spirit and issued a block that would surely have served no preventative purpose. The last thing an already heated situation needed was admin overreaching (or even anything that could be characterized or perceived as admin overreaching), and one fears that not everyone would have been so sensible. Hey Chris, I saw that you were tied up with some ongoing dispute recently but it seems you're available now. There's a category on User:AnemoneProjectors that was never created / doesn't exist and there is a category on User:Badagnani that was created before and was deleted, but it's still there in red. Am I allowed to remove these red link categories per some policy or guideline? I could not find any reference on WP:CATEGORY, WP:BB, or WP:CAT-R supporting the removal of non-existent categories (especially on user-related pages) and was hoping you could enlighten me on this. If you also have the time, there's something else I think you missed which I've been wanting to know the answer to also. My regards, Lord Sesshomaru 22:46, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
