Kelly Michael Halliburton Kelly Michael Halliburton is an American musician recognized for his fast picking style of bass playing, as well as his roles as a drummer and guitarist. He has been involved in various bands, including Pierced Arrows, Dead Moon, Detestation, Defiance, and Jenny Don't and the Spurs. He is recognized for his significant contributions to the independent music scene, often releasing his work through his own labels, including Consensus Reality[1] and Doomtown Sounds.

Musical Career

edit

Resist, Detestation, Deprived, Defiance

edit

Kelly Halliburton began his musical career in the late '80s in Portland, Oregon, joining several bands associated with the anarcho-punk scene, including Resist, Defiance, Deprived, and Detestation. His involvement reflected a dissatisfaction with the late-'80s Portland music scene, particularly the fusion of punk with heavy metal and funk metal, as well as the emergence of Nazi ideologies[2]. Halliburton and his bandmates sought to carve out their own musical identity amidst these challenges.[3]

In 1992, Resist embarked on their first European tour, which marked Kelly's initial trip abroad.

Detestation, an American hardcore punk/crust band with female vocals, was founded by Kelly Halliburton in 1995 in Portland, Oregon. The band disbanded around 1998.

Over the course of the 1990s, Kelly returned to Europe with various bands on multiple occasions, eventually leading to his decision to settle in Germany at the conclusion of a European tour with band Detestation.

Severed Head Of State, Murder Disco X, Cluster Bomb Unit

edit

During his time in Germany, Halliburton continued to be active in the music scene, playing in bands, organizing tours, and engaging with the local music community. He joined Cluster Bomb Unit as a bass player, later transitioning to guitar, and also played drums in the German band Murder Disco X. His residency was primarily in Ludwigsburg during this period. Additionally, Halliburton was a member of the hardcore band Severed Head Of State. Despite the band members living in various places throughout the US, they frequently flew to meet each other for recording and touring,

In 2005, Halliburton returned to the United States, specifically to Portland, Oregon, where he continued his musical pursuits.

Pierced Arrows

edit

In March 2007, following the disbandment of Dead Moon, Fred and Toody Cole approached Halliburton, offering him the position of drummer in their new project, Pierced Arrows.[4] Despite primarily being a bass player with limited drumming experience, he accepted the offer.[5] Pierced Arrows released two full-length albums and five singles and toured extensively until Fred's health began to decline around 2016.

P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S

edit

In an attempt to deviate away from the musical styles of the more hardcore - anarcho punk from his earlier previous projects, Halliburton started P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S. in 2009. The band had various members and released several records throughout it's existence. [3]

Notable members include Dean Johnson (Poison Idea), Everclear percussionist Brian Lehfeldt, Wiper's drummer Sam Henry, Wade Murff, who later drummed in American horror punk band Doyle, and former child actor Jonny P. Jewells.[6]

P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S disbanded when Jewells committed suicide January 1st, 2018. [7]

Jenny Don't and the Spurs

edit

In 2011, Halliburton and his girlfriend, Jenny Don't, embarked on a new musical endeavor, forming the western band Jenny Don't and the Spurs. Conceived initially as a kitchen table project,[8] the duo sought to explore a different musical direction from the punk rock bands both Halliburton and Don't were known for. To bring their vision to life, they enlisted the talents of Wipers drummer Sam Henry, and after various guitar players in 2017 Christopher March joined on as full time lead guitar.

Jenny Don't and the Spurs have maintained an active presence, performing live, touring, and releasing albums.

Record Labels

edit

Consensus Reality: Halliburton founded Consensus Reality, a record label that released records for bands such as, Detestation, Defiance, Resist, and various underground DIY anarcho-punk acts.[9] The label played a role in supporting independent punk music during its operation until Halliburton relocated to Germany in 1999, leading to the c of Consensus Reality's operation.

Doomtown Sounds: In 2010, Kelly Halliburton founded Doomtown Sounds, serving as a platform for releasing records for bands such as P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S., DON'T, Jenny Don't and the Spurs, and various other Portland-based acts.

Equipment

edit

Throughout his musical career, Kelly Halliburton has predominantly played a 1979 Fender Precision Bass, showcasing a preference for vintage instruments. In addition to his Fender Precision Bass, he occasionally incorporates vintage guitars from various countries, including Japan, Brazil (Gianinni), Czechoslovakia (Jolana), and Yugoslavia (Melodija), into his performances.[10]

Personal life

edit

On August 21st, 2022, Kelly Halliburton and Jenny Don't were married after being together for 13 years. The wedding ceremony was officiated by Jerry A., singer of the Portland Hardcore band Poison Idea. [10]
