Crain Communications was founded in 1916 in Louisville, Kentucky by G.D. Crain, Jr. It began with a staff of three people and two publications: Class and Hospital Management.[1] The company, originally known as Advertising Publications, Inc., moved to Chicago in 1916 and changed its name to Crain Communications in 1969.[2]

Crain Communications publishes 27 trade, business, and consumer newspapers,[3] with publications covering areas including the automotive industry (Automotive News, Autoweek), the financial sector (Business Insurance, Investment News), and media (Advertising Age).[4]

G.D. Crain, Jr. served as the company's founder and chairman for nearly six decades until his death in 1973. His widow, Gertrude Crain, then followed as company chairman for the next 23 years, until son Keith Crain replaced her as chairman in 1997. Following his father’s death, Rance Crain became president of Crain Communications in 1974.[2]

As of 2012, Crain Communications has over 850 employees operating from 11 international offices.[5]

Crain Communications moved its headquarters to Detroit, Michigan, in 2001 to consolidate its Detroit-based employees into one facility.[6]
