1580–1 Edmund Campion, Robert Persons Campion was captured and executed; Persons left the country. Literature was produced on clandestine presses. The "first mission". It prompted the English government to take a more severe line with recusants. Jasper Heywood entered the country in June 1581, and took over when Persons left as superior of the mission.[1]
1584–6 William Weston Weston was captured and imprisoned in Wisbech Castle. Philip Howard was reconciled to the Catholic church. The mission became involved in exorcisms. The "second mission".
1586 onwards Robert Southwell and Henry Garnet. They were joined by Edward Oldcorne and John Gerard. Southwell was captured in 1592, and executed. The mission became established. The "third mission". It continued to the time of the Wisbech Stirs, Archpriest Controversy, and Gunpowder Plot.
