Emmerdale is a British soap opera, chronicling the joys and the heartbreaks of a tightly-knit countryside community who live in the fictitious Yorkshire Dale village of Emmerdale. The show entered its 40th broadcasted year on 1 January 2011 with its 5807th episode, with Gavin Blyth produced episodes continuing until April when Stuart Blackburn took over following Blyth passing away. Emmerdale aired 307 episodes in 2011, with the the typical week comprising six half-hour episodes on ITV1, with two episodes airing on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the rest containing a singular, in a time slot of 19.00 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 8.00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Storylines that ran throughout the year include the village fire which occurred when the local post office was burnt down and as a result two long running characters were killed off from the serial which were Viv Hope (Deena Payne) and Terry Woods (Billy Hartman). This storyline also tangled in the arson storyline on the ex jealous boyfriend of Nick Henshall (Michael McKell) and had a major effect on a number of characters. Another significant storyline which ran throughout 2011 was the "Who Attacked Cain?" montage which occurred when the shows serial villain Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) was attacked and several characters were thought to be possible suspects.
Characters that were introduced during this year were Cameron Murray (Dominic Power), Alex Moss (Kurtis Stacey), Rachel Breckle (Gemma Oaten), Leo Goskirk (Theo Tasker & Harry Whittaker), Sean Spencer (Luke Roskell), Ali Spencer (Kelli Hollis), Amelia Spencer (Daisy Campbell), Ruby Haswell (Alicya Eyo), Elliot Windsor (Oliver Brooke), Georgia Sharma (Trudie Goodwin), Rishi Sharma (Bhasker Patel), Kyle Wyatt (Molly & Isaac Ainsworth), Dan Spencer (Liam Fox) and Jude Watson (Andy Wear). Ryan Prescott, Andy Walker and Matt Milburn all guest starred as Flynn Buchanan, Steve Kelly and Nicky Pritchard throughout the year. Cast returning on a regular basis in 2011 included Priya Sharma played by a new actress, Fiona Wade. Adele Silva made a guest return throughout the year as Kelly Windsor. Characters that departed the series in 2011 were Mia Macey (Sapphire Elia), Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi), Ella Hart (Corrinne Wicks), Jackson Walsh (Marc Silcock), Scarlett Nicholls (Kelsey-Beth Crossley), Eve Jenson (Suzanne Shaw), Dermot Macey (Frank Kelly), Ryan Lamb (James Sutton), Roz Fielding (Kirsty-Leigh Porter), Nick Henshall (Michael McKell), Faye Lamb (Kim Thomson), Douglas Potts (Duncan Preston), Will Wylde (Oscar Lloyd), Maisie Wylde (Alice Coulthard), Terry Woods (Billy Hartman), Viv Hope (Deena Payne), TJ Woods (Connor Lee) and Michael Feldmann (Matthew Vaughan). Richard Thorp and Kitty McGeever both temporarily left their roles as Alan Turner and Lizzie Lakely, both returning towards the end of the year.
Cast and characters edit
The first half of the year encompassed the departure for Michael Feldmann (Matthew Vaughan) which consisted of the storyline in which Michael was convinced that Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) was responsible for killing his mother, Elizabeth Pollard (Kate Dove) back in 1993 in a plane crash that occurred in the village. However, after the character of Michael was convinced by Eric's new wife, Val Pollard (Charlie Hardwick), that Eric wasn't responsible, Michael ended his feud with Eric and leaves the village. The second departure of the year consisted of two characters, Maisie Wylde (Alice Coulthard) and her little brother Will Wylde (Oscar Lloyd). It was announced in June 2010 that Alice was quitting her role as Maisie on Emmerdale in order to pursue in new projects, and the storyline evolved together by the character of Maisie finding work in London.[1] The third departures of the year was the most dramatic and explosive of them all in which viewers witnessed the death of two long-running characters, Viv Hope (Deena Payne) and Terry Woods (Billy Hartman) after they are killed in an arson crime. The events occurred after the character of Nick Henshall (Michael McKell) was suffering from hero syndrome and set fire to Victoria Cottage, the occupants of the cottage were rescued before harmed but the fire travelled down the maisonettes and into the local post office which were were Terry and Viv were.[2] Actor Duncan Preston decided to leave the serial and his role as Doug Potts in which viewers saw Doug leave the village to give his relationship with ex-wife Hilary Potts (Paula Wilcox) another go.[3]
