Hello, welcome to your New Page Patrol School page! Every person I instruct will have their own page on which I will give them support and tasks for them to complete. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist. Your NPP School page has been specifically designed according to you and what you have requested instruction in - for that reason, please be as specific as possible when under my instruction, so that I know the best ways to help you (and do not be afraid to let me know if you think something isn't working).

Make sure you read through Wikipedia:Notability as that's the knowledge which most of the questions I ask you and tasks you do will revolve around.

How to use this page

This page will be built up over your time in the Academy, with new sections being added as you complete old ones. Each section will end with a task, written in bold type - this might just ask a question, or it might require you to go and do something. You can answer a question by typing the answer below the task; if you have to do something, you will need to provide diffs to demonstrate that you have completed the task. Some sections will have more than one task, sometimes additional tasks may be added to a section as you complete them. Please always sign your responses to tasks as you would on a talk page.

If both the instructor and student make completing the course curriculum a top priority, it will generally take around a month to go through the entirety of the curriculum. This pace is not required or necessarily expected, but rather is provided in order to give participants an idea of what to expect.

Notability edit

PART 1

When patrolling or reviewing an article, you may often come across articles do not meet the WP:N guidelines, but the editors make the edits in good faith. Please read WP:AGF and do not WP:BITE the new editors.

A. Notability is a test guidelines to decide whether a given topic warrants its own article in Wikipedia mainspace. Please read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, General Notability Guidelines, Specific Notability Guidelines, Stand-alone list before completing the following tasks.

General notability guidelines edit

1. In your own words, why it is important to WP:AGF and not WP:BITE new editors.

Answer: It's important to know that new contributors (and experienced ones) will make mistakes, and some will lead to conflict. Most of the time, people aren't actively trying to harm and may be ignorant to wikipedia's policies, unaware of how what they've written sounds, etc. The bottom line is, assume that the person is well-meaning, and turn their enthusiasm in a positive direction.

Y.It's obvious that anybody in the new to Wikipedia would make some mistakes for no knowing Wikipedia guidelines, markup, protocols. For such it is important not to attacks new editors which may result in unpleasant situations such as fights or their leave and subsequent loss to the community instead we should educate and support them them in a civilized manner. Cassiopeia(talk) 09:05, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

2. In your own words, how does notability is defined in Wikipedia?

Answer: Notability is how users check to see whether a subject could be considered well-known enough to be on Wikipedia. Checks should be made on whether it meets the General Notability Guideline: the subject matter is backed up by reliable sources, and not just in passing mentions. It may also have to meet a subject-specific notability guideline. If it falls under What Wikipedia is not, then it's probably non-notable.

 Y. In Wikipedia, notability means "worthy to be noted" - it is defined as a topic is "presumably" notable for stand-alone article or list if (1) it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject whee by the sources talk "directly" about the subject in depth and in length and not only passing mentioned and (2) it is not excluded under the What WP:Wikipedia is not policy. Cassiopeia(talk) 09:05, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

3. Does a step by step instructions on how to "Change a car tire" considered a notable topic in Wikipedia?

Answer: No, as per WP:NOTMANUAL. It likely will be backed up by reliable sources, but is not appropriate for an encyclopedia.

 Y. Right as Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a how to manual site. Cassiopeia(talk) 09:05, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

4. What are the differences between A WP:GNG and a specific notability guidelines? how do we determine which one to use when patrolling an article?

Answer: General Notability Guideline is a basic criteria that all articles should cover. A specific notability guideline is certain criteria for topics that should be met, e.g Books should follow the SNG for writings. Use both to determine the notability of an article.

 Y. Both can be used when patrolling but those subject falls under SNG/SSG (sport specific guidelines) but fails to meet the WP:GNG guidelines would sometimes nominated for deleteion WP:AfD for discussion to determine the status of the article. (We will cover AfD in later assignment in later assignment). Cassiopeia(talk) 09:05, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

Specific notability guidelines edit

5. If an editor creates an article about "2024 Summer Olympics" in 2019 without providing any sources, is the subject considered not notable and why?

Answer: If there is already preparation for this future event (as per WP:EVENT) then look for sources to add to the article. If there are a good amount of potential sources, then the article could be improved, and is considered notable.

 Y. Good. As a reviewer, it is a good will act to find sources to strengthen the notability of the subject if we know where to find the source and know the subject is potentially notable. Cassiopeia(talk) 09:05, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

B. Without considered of sources/content policies and review just based on "subject specific notability" (SSN) "alone" for sake of the exercises below, please answer if the subject meets the SSN guidelines, based on the given content below, and specify under (1) which notability criteria they meet or fail (example - MUSICBI#1 if certain sub set of criteria is applicable) and (2) reasons/explanations.

6. A New York city based 2019 start up software company , specializing in data mining, has just received a USD 200K investor fund.

Answer: Fails SNG for corporations, (WP:ORG) receiving investments doesn't make it notable.

 Y. WP:CORP is a very strict SSN guidelines - when reviewing a company article we need to make sure WP:CORP guidelines is met as we have billions of companies existed in the world. Cassiopeia(talk) 09:05, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

7. Nascimento Ferreira who is a Ultimate Fighting Championships fighters with the undefeated mixed martial arts record of 8-0.

Answer: Looks like they meet the MMA guideline, (WP:NMMA) have been in 8 fights, minimum is 3 to be notable.

 N. Please read the WP:NMMA again as it states "Have fought at least three professional fights for a top-tier MMA organization, such as the UFC (see WP:MMATIER)" and if you read WP:MMATIER it states top tier promoter today is UFC or Invicta. Ferreira has only one fight under UFC at the present stage see here. When reading guidelines, we also need to read other links to search for more info for further understanding of the guidelines. For sport person SSN notability is depending on the sport they play, some SSN specify signed by certain club, some indicated a play/match need to be secure before notable, other such as MMA fighters need at least 3 fights to meet MMABIO guidlines, in short, we need to read the SSN to understand the requirements. Cassiopeia(talk) 09:05, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

8. A upcoming action drama title "Suleiman the Great" based on the the life of Suleiman the Magnificent, was reported will be in production in December 2020 and to be released on August 2022 in the cinemas.

Answer: Fails WP:NFF, "Films that have not been confirmed by reliable sources to have commenced principal photography should not have their own articles". This means that just because the production has started filming doesn't make it notable.

 Y. Cassiopeia(talk) 09:05, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

9. A political candidates, without any previous or current political position, who is running for November 2020 election for a Senator position in United States with multiple local newspapers coverage of his candidacy.

Answer: Um, I think that fails WP:POLITICIAN, they have never had office. Articles about politicians should only be written if they have or formerly had office.

Y When running for a position, most politician would have some coverage by the news, even thought it passed WP:GNG, it is still considered not notable and such pages will be voted for deletion in WP:AfD. However, if a politician has won the election but yet to held the position in the office yet, they are considered notable. Cassiopeia(talk) 09:05, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

10. A singer who self produced his first album in May 2019 and his songs are listed in Spotify.

Answer: Look up artist, and if they don't meet anything else in WP:MUSICBIO, under Wikipedia:COMPOSER, non-notable. Artists have to have done something notable within music, or be somewhat influential. Being on spotify isn't any indication.

 Y Cassiopeia(talk) 09:05, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

Sources and content policy edit

A. Sources
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia for such content claimed should be supported by independent (secondary), reliable sources for verification. Please read WP:RS, WP:IS, WP:RSP, WP:V, WP:PROVEIT, WP:Primary, WP:Secondary, and WP:Tertiary and answered the the below questions in your own words.
You could contact WP:RX if you could not find the sources yourself either on web due to Paywall content or printed books.

1.
Topic Explanation 5 Examples Comment by Cass
Reliable source Reliable sources are those known to be truthful, to have integrity, and are not related to the subject matter.
  1. (example)The Guardian newspaper
  2. The Daily Telegraph
  3. The Economist
  4. Vox
  5. The Times (London)
  6. The Observer
 Y. Reliable source that is published with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:35, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
User generated sources Self-published references from sites where uploading content is largely free by any user. These shouldn't be used as refs.
  1. Wikipedia, obviously.
  2. Twitter
  3. Facebook
  4. Instagram
  5. Blogs
Y Wikipedia can be be used as a source. When reading Wikipedia article, read the source of the content to verify if the source is reliable and independent. If content is unsourced, dont trust the content. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:35, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
Non Independent source Sources that are related to the subject matter, and show a closeness with knowledge of a non-disclosed connection.
  1. Press Releases
  2. Syndicated news releases
  3. Conflict of interest by person/company concerned, e.g a source written by them.
  4. Conflict of interest by someone connected
  5. Sponsored releases
 Y. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:35, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

2.
Type Explanation Sources (15 Primary ; 5 Secondary ; 5 Tertiary) Comment by Cass
Primary Primary sources are materials closely related or written by someone concerned with the subject matter.
  1. (example) scientific journal articles reporting experimental research results
  2. Memoir or account of someone involved
  3. Personal site or blog of someone involved
  4. Press release about subject matter

  4. Dictionaries
  5. Brittanica
  6. Scholarly work about subject matter
 Y. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:35, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

3.

Subject Primary Secondary Tertiary Comment by Cass
Example: Art Example:Sculpture Example:Article critiquing the sculpture Example:Encyclopedic article on the sculptor
History Eyewitness account Textbook Encyclopedia  Y. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:35, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
Science Account by scientist Science book Bibliography  Y. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:35, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
Athletes Interview Biography Encyclopedia  Y. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:35, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

4. Please explain in your own words why the content claimed needs to be verified?

Answer: Content that is unverified leaves no way of knowing whether it's true. If a piece of information is backed up by a reliable source, then that proves the info. An encyclopedia needs to have verifiable info.

 Y. It is not about true but it is all about verification - see Wikipedia:But it's true!. Example - If a well reputable/reliable, independent source indicate XXX has 2 sons, but instead he has 3 sons, we will put 2 sons on the subject article. We will only correct the content when the source (can be from another independent reliable source) corrected itself. When we look at many history events, we have not idea if the incidents were actually happened/true, but we would take/cite it from what the independent reliable source state. Sometimes few independent, reliable indicate different outcome/results/reasons, we (Wikipedia) would record them - example Alexander the Great - How he die is based on which sources you read, from poising, to malaria and typhoid fever to infectious (meningitis) to acute pancreatitis and etc. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:35, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

5.Could we used Wikipedia as the source? and why?

Answer: Some wikipedia pages can be used as sources, but anything uncited on Wikipedia should be taken with a grain of salt (apart from the obvious stuff.)

N Wikipedia can NOT be the source - see WP:CIRCULAR. Article/content from Wikipedia is based on independent, reliable sources, we the editor merely summary the significant/relevant part of the source in our own word in neutral point of view. Do not trust Wikipedia as many content is unsourced, but read the source of the content claim instead that is the reason Wikipedia is all about WP:PROVEIT and WP:V. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:35, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
Comment: Sorry, Cass, I misunderstood the question. I thought you were asking if Wikipedia could be used as a source in general for non-wikipedia things.
Wikipedia can NOT be the source for non Wikipedia article (like magazines/newspapers) and it also can NOT be used as the source for Wikipedia pages (internal). All in all Wikipedia can NOT be the source. Readers need to check the source provided to read WP:V if the content claimed is a per source stated. That is the reason why Wikipedia is all about WP:PROVEIT/ WP:V.
6.Give an example and explain why a source is reliable but not independent of a subject?

Answer: Press releases are non independent sources written by someone concerned with the subject matter, but it's important to check how reliable the press release is first.

N press release is non independent and most of the time is not reliable as it is usually published by the primary source such as the company/sport club/marketing agency themselves. Pls give an example (more specific) and justify your answer. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:35, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
Answer again(give specific example and justification) : Memoirs and autobiographies are always primary accounts by people concerned, so not independent, but if published reputably, reliable.
Y if it is published "by" reputable publication house. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:19, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

7.Give an example and explain why a source is independent source but not reliable?

Answer: Sources that are outdated may be independent from the subject matter, but also may have been disproved or discredited in more recent research.

 N. Please read WP:RS and WP:IS again. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:35, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
Answer again (give specific example and justification) : Newspapers such as The Daily Mail that are listed at WP:RSP may be independent of the subject, but is not considered reliable after community consensus, as it is a tabloid.
 Y. Good. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:19, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Pls indicate "y" for yes or "n" for no or "?" after "ind", "rel" and "sig" (see first example) and give a brief explanation of why you place "y" or "n".

Fallingwater, Mill Run, Pennsylvania (1937)

Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator. Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. His creative period spanned more than 70 years. He works includes The Guggenheim, swirling, snail-shaped museum in the middle of Manhattan.[1][2] Fallingwater, which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture."[3] This is one of Wright's most famous private residences (completed 1937), was built for Mr. and Mrs. Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr., at Mill Run, Pennsylvania. Constructed over a 30-foot waterfall, it was designed according to Wright's desire to place the occupants close to the natural surroundings. The house was intended to be more of a family getaway, rather than a live-in home.[4]

WikiMacaroons Good day. See Assignment 2 above. Please ping me when you have finished with the assignment and ready for a review. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 11:37, 8 August 2020 (UTC)
Cassiopeia I think I've done; sorry I took so long - I had to set aside a time to do it in one go. WikiMacaroonsCinnamon? 13:44, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
WikiMacaroons I think you have missed question 2 (secondary and tertiary questions). Kindly answer them. Secondly, I need to to elabroate/explain in "details on" independent/significant/reliable files for question 8 onward so I may know why you indicate yes/no (not all answers are the same as significant coverage/no COI etc but "really" provide "details" info to justify your answers. Btw, this NPPSCOOL program is a little complicated and reading material is a lot, all my trainees need at least a few sessions to complete the questions. If you rush to answer all questions in one go, you would not be able to read all the reading material and you need to rework the assignment which would be frustrating. So take the time to read and answer the question thoroughly. Ping when you rework and ping me when you are done. Thank you. Cassiopeia(talk) 06:32, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
Cassiopeia Good advice, I'll do it chunk by chunk in future, thanks. I think I've fixed those issues. :) WikiMacaroonsCinnamon? 08:31, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
Sorry to ping again, Cassiopeia, but I don't know if the previous ping went through. WikiMacaroonsCinnamon? 08:59, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

Answer:Most of it looks ok, but the last paragraph is not backed up by a source.

Y Need detail explanation as per guidelines and pls do that in the future so I may know what is the reasons behind your short answer.
Per WP:BLP - multiple independent reliable sources are needed and the content need to be written in neutral point of view (WP:NPOV]] and should exclude original research. Information on the assault can be included with multiple reliable published included. Unsourced content on the child should be immediately removed and it would be WP:GOSSIP, WP:GRAPEVINE. Answer:WP:BLPPRIVACY states that addresses and phone numbers should not be included in articles. Other than that, the info looks fine.

 Y. Content besides the address and phone # are well-source for such could be kept in the article. By the way, the address and tel belong to the White House. Cassiopeia(talk) 10:38, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Images copyright edit

Please read Wikipedia:Image use policy and Wikipedia:Public domain image resources. Please answer the questions below and (1) with explanation based on Wikipedia guidelines and (2) provide the guidelines/links in your answer.

5. Could this image-1 be uploaded into C:Main Page and used in Wikipedia? and Why.

Answer- Explanation: Image is from US department of defence, and images taken by government employees don't fall under copyright. Non-copyrighted images can be uploaded.

Answer - link/guideline: WP:PDIR

 Y. Cassiopeia(talk) 10:38, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

6. Could this image-2 be uploaded into C:Main Page and used in Wikipedia? and Why.

Answer- Explanation: Is on free-images.com, which contains public domain images.

Answer - link/guideline: WP:PDIR

 Y. We also always need to check the "original site" (the original source) that the image is in PD (public domain). If we click on the flickr link provided on the right of the image it will take your to [3] where it was uploaded by the owner and stated public domain (PD) there.

7. Could this image-3 be uploaded into C:Main Page and used in Wikipedia?

Answer- Explanation: The image is on commons and as been reviewed as free, therefore is ok to use.

If can not be used as it would violated copyrights guidelines as per WP:IUPC. Cassiopeia(talk) 10:38, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Neutral point of view edit

P;lease read WP:NPOV and MOS:PUFF. Point out the WP:NPOV words/pharses and rewrite the paragraph on Question 9& 10 from a neutral point of view.

9. She is a brilliant boxer with a rare and exceptional beauty. She turned Pro at the age of 19 after winning one amateur fight on December 14, 2013 where she destroyed her opponent in 20 seconds. Her talent and marketability made her a fighter to watch right out the gate and she fought under XXX promotion on her next fight on February 2014.

Answer: Too many peacock words in there. (MOS:PUFF) Brilliant, destroyed, rare and exeptional beauty, etc. Rewrite: She is a boxer, who turned professional at age 19 after winning one amateur fight on December 14, 2013 in 20 seconds. She fought under XXX promotion on her next fight in February 2014.

Y very good. Even she is extremely beautiful, we would not indicate so for this would stray the readers' emotions. Cassiopeia(talk) 10:38, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

10. He is a popular, acclaimed Bulgarian actor, who loves by all who have watched his films. He was born in Veliko Tarnovo and started working in the film industry since he was at the tender, innocent of the age of 14 and he has featured in 44 films.

Answer: Again, too much puffery. Rewrite: He is a Bulgarian actor, born in Veliko Tarnovo. He started working in the film industry at 14 and has since featured in 44 films.

Y removed all the puffery words such as "popular, acclaimed, tender, innocent, loves by all who have watch is films". Cassiopeia(talk) 10:38, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

11. Please read WP:DUE and in your own words, please explain why it is important to provide balance and due weight content in an article.

Answer: Due weight explains that all Wikipedia articles should represent all viewpoints, and give in-depth explanations of people's positions

Y.Take the article Capital punishment for example, there are people who want to abolish it while others want to retain it. Cassiopeia(talk) 10:38, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

No original research edit

Please read WP:OR and WP:NOT and answer the questions below
12. In your own words, why Wikipedia is not a platform to publish original research?

Answer: Wikipedia's policies say that statements have to be backed up by reliable references. Editors should not conduct their own research, as it may be a non-NPOV, or subjective, so independent reliable subjects are better.

 Y. Wikipedia guidelines indicates all the content to be previously published by numerous independent reliable sources- see WP:PROVEIT and WP:V. It doesn't allow any opinions or ideas. Original research is a subjective point of view, not reviewed or fact checked by reliable sources - see wP:RS. Cassiopeia(talk) 10:38, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

13. In your own words, please provide one example with explanation when it is appropriate to insert an original research or an opinion in an article.

Answer: If we're giving opinions of people, (not your own) such as quotes, etc.

 Y. We could use exact words from the source in the article when (1) it is a public domain sites (2) the author/site has released their copyright and anyone to use the content/image such as " agree to irrevocably agree to release content/image under the CC BY-SA License and the GFDL or under the Creative Commons license. (3) a direct quote and provide the source. Example Constitution of the United States and in Robert Whittaker (fighter) page (see below direct quote). Cassiopeia(talk) 10:38, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

In an interview with GQ Australia, he stated:

I am immensely proud to be an Australian and to be a pioneer in the sport to, you know, lead, lead today's MMA scene against all these other countries, you know, it really, it really does light me up, to see that the Australian flag when I walk out, you know, to hear them called out that I'm Australian and I am very patriotic. I am really proud of my country and proud of where I am from.[1]

14. See this video and write the content in the in an article by using the video info as the source.

Answer: Sh. Shady Alsuleiman states that jeans are not permitted in Islam for men or women, as Muslims should wear modest, baggy clothes.

 Y. Good. As per WP:NPOV and written in your own words or Another way to do it is to use a direct quote (see below). Cassiopeia(talk) 10:38, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

Verifiability edit

Please read WP:V and answer the questions below
15. If the subject has two sons and it is supported by three independent, reliable sources but in reality he has 3 sons. Could we change the content from "2" sons to "3 sons"? and why?

Answer: I don't have enough proof if no source says the correct amount, so for now I can't change 2 to 3, as all the sources point the other way.

 Y. Wikipedia is NOT about the true, but about verifiability by independent, reliable sources - See WP:But it's true. We correct the content when the source corrected itself (same source or other sources). Cassiopeia(talk) 10:38, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

6. Why copyright violation needs to be stamped out from Wikipedia and who determined when a violation is lawfully taking place?

Answer: Because Wikipedia's platform requires content to be free to use. The law determines whether a copyvio is lawful.

Y right. Copyright infringement violation entails legal implications. Wikipedia takes violation of copyvio "very seriously". Cassiopeia(talk) 09:11, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

7. Pls read WP:COPYVIO, WP:REVDEL, WP:COPYPASTE, WP:DCM and WP:G12 and provide 5 successful CSD 12 articles you have nominated from Special:NewPagesFeed (New Page Patrol or Article for Creation section). Pls provide the article names and I will check them at your CSD log. You can use Earwig's Copyvio Detector tool to check if an article is in violation of COPYVIO.

9. Pls read WP:R2 and WP:NPPDRAFT. Please explain when to a new page (NPP article) can be nominated for CSD R2 and what should be considered when doing such move?

Answer: R2 is for cross-namespace redirects, such as Main to Draftspace. Consider whether the redirect is actually useful before deleting it.

 Y. Note on R2 to draft space - We move articles to the draftspace to allow articles to be developed especially potential but unsourced WP:BLP article. Use R2 sparingly as some admins do not like pages to be move to draft page even WP:NPPDRAFT states the move is a safe place for editor to adding necessary sources, they would deems the if the articles are not improved or edit in 6 months, it will be G13. @Cassiopeia: Hi, Cass. Just wanted to point out that I sent these draftify logs, as the draftify script I use automatically tags draft redirects with CSD R2, without putting them in your CSD log, so I sent you the fact that I had draftified them and thus nommed them per R2 instead. Copyright violation and paid editors edit

Pls read WP:COI and WP:PAID and answer the following question
11. How do we spot a COI/PAID editor?

Answer: Look out for promotional writing, editing articles of similar subject, having a username that relates to their promotional behaviour, etc.

Y see more on "Notes" section. Cassiopeia(talk)

12. What you should do when you review an NPP article and notice the creator is a COI editor?

Answer:I think there was a discussion recently about whether COI editors should have to go through AFC, and I reckon so. Obviously they have to disclose their conflict of interest, but if their article doesn't present due weight or is too promotional, report it.

 Y. In Wikipedia guidelines, a paid editor's article needs to go through AfC then NPP to review the content (no exception - if you see any Paid editor editor on main space moved it to draft immediate). However, some admin would considered COI editor's article needs to go through AfC but I have yet to seen it in any Wikipedia guidelines stated that. For CoI article, we tag the article with COI, send a COI message to the editor. Editor needs to disclosed their COI on their user page and the article talk page - see WP:Disclose. Cassiopeia(talk) 09:11, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

13. Please read WP:PAID. What you should do when you review an NPP article and notice the creator is a paid editor?

Answer:If they didn't disclose it, should probably report that.

 N. Paid editor (which is also a COI editor) needs to disclosed their COI on the article talk page and their user page. We "must" move a COI editor page from new page feed to draft space no matter how many years/edits/page created by the COI editor so the article would be first check by WP:Article for Creation (AfC) reviewer and then by New Page (NPP) reviewer/patroller. If a reviewer has both AfC and NPP reviewer right, then once the article (any article) is accepted in draft space will be automatically bypass New Page review and place in main space. Google will index the page (a few hours to a few days - Wikipedia has no control of when it will be indexed) once the article is accepted by a NPP reveiwer. Cassiopeia, regarding the finding COI pages section, do they have to be mainspace pages? WikiMacaroonsCinnamon? 07:16, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
WikiMacaroons COI, CSD for promotion, Copyvio can be tagged in newpage or draft pages as long as they meets the criteria. Cassiopeia(talk) 07:27, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
@Cassiopeia: Sorry to ping you before I've finished the assignment, but I need help. This assignment has been taking a while, because it's quite difficult to find lots of examples of the CSDs. Is there any quicker way to catch these? Thanks, WikiMacaroonsCinnamon? 20:24, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
WikiMacaroons For promotional and copyvio (G11 and G12) you can nominate article from the new page and draft space; but for all other CSD you can nominate on new page - see [NewPagesFeed here and select the new page or draft space by clicking the button on the grey panel on the top. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 01:42, 11 September 2020 (UTC)
WikiMacaroons I do notice you have been working on the assignment and it is encouraging. For R2, pls read Wikipedia:Cross-namespace redirects and WP:NPPDRAFT. What you could do is find article (very important to note this) which the subject is notable (say a national elected politician) where by no sources are provided (Note if there is any external links/further reading or refs provided but without inline citation, then pls DO NOT R2 the article). You can find them on New page patrol at New Pages Feed. Here, R2 is to move articles from the new page to the draftspace. This is to allow articles to be developed especially potential but unsourced WP:BLP article. Use R2 sparingly as some admins do not like pages to be move to draft page even WP:NPPDRAFT states the move is a safe place for editor to adding necessary sources, they would deems the if the articles are not improved or edit in 6 months, it will be G13. To request for a R2 add R2 template (see -Template:Db-r2) on top of the page. Let me know if you need further help. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 00:25, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
Phew, @Cassiopeia:, that assignment took a rather long time! Glad to have finally finished it. Sorry to have taken so long. Thanks, WikiMacaroonsCinnamon? 19:47, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
WikiMacaroons No worries. Give me a few days to review it. Thank you. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:37, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

WikiMacaroons No worries that you took a long time to complete. I am happy with your progress and perseverance. I know Assignment 5 is particular hard so is Assignment 6, but the remaining assignments would be rather easy. Pls see notes below and comments above and pls re-answer Q 5 and R2 - Q10 iii & iV. Once you have done, ping me. Cassiopeia(talk) 09:11, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
@Cassiopeia: I fixed my answer, and please read my comment on R2 about how my draftify script automatically nominates mainspace-to-draft redirects for Speedy Deletion R2, which is why I couldn't send you it in my CSD log, and sent the draftify log instead. Thanks, WikiMacaroonsCinnamon? 09:31, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
WikiMacaroons I hav reviewed (answer again) for Q5. As for R2 - Q10 iii & iV, you need to do "R2" for another 2 articles. R2 is not moving the article from mainspace to draft space "by you" but by "admin". We request an R2 and upon admin approval, the admin will move the article to draft safe. Athough move can do the function, this is not the exercise here. When requested enough move to draft successful R2, then the editor can request for "move manager" user right. To request/tag R2 pls use {{db-r2}} - see Template:Db-r2. Once you have "answer again (new articles)" then ping me. Cassiopeia(talk) 23:18, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
@Cassiopeia: Sorry I’ve been AWOL lately, have been focussed on Dapperbot. I’ll get on finishing the assignment now.

@Cassiopeia: Ok, I've done two new R2's. WikiMacaroonsCinnamon? 16:53, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
WikiMacaroons I am so sorry for taking so long to review you answers as I thought I had done them already weeks ago. Upon checking on the your program page and found out I havent. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 05:20, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

Notes

R2 - See additional info on R2 Wikipedia:Cross-namespace redirects and WP:NPPDRAFT.

G11 (promo) - What constitute a G11? At times it is hard to define. Although if a article is bluntly promote or advertise about the subject then it is a G11. Sometimes, the it is a little subtle and that would be a judgement call. As a rule of thumb, if article about an entertainers (actor/singer/DJ/artist and etc) in dept of how hard they work, how motivated they are, using all the puffery/flowery languages and especially the subject does not meet notability guidelines. For a corporation, we would see they list down all they product/services, their directors/key person in the company, they mission, their client, they are the influencer in their industrial, all the words/phrased to enhance/market the company and no substantial info that is supported by independent reliable sources.

G12 (copyvio) -

Copyright violation addresses the use of original expression without permission of the holder which is a violation of laws even the credit is given to the source. For articles, the Copyright Law gives the copyright protection to the “original works of authorship fixed in in a tangible medium of expression” in the newspaper, magazine and freelance article at the moment of their creation, for the life of the creator plus 70 years after, and 95 years for corporation publication or 120 years from date of creation, whichever is shorter.

A “fact” is not considered an original work of authorship; but how the ways facts are recorded where the style of the writing, choice and/or arrangement of words are copyrightable. An infringement of copyright is committed when a person uses the “exact words /almost exact words in a consecutive manner” of the author/holder. To note, as a guideline, a few words copies from the original works and an idea of expression such as "weather the storm", 'crossing the Rubicon" "as dead as a doornail" and etc. proper nouns, document/event/treaty/person/title/ names are generally acceptable and so is a direct quote of speech. However, any longer phrases which would be expression in a number of ways are copyright protected. To use one of two short sentences on a large article generally is ok but it will considered infringement if the edit entry is consists of big percentage of the original work and yet for some (such as newspaper/press/journalism that takes their work very seriously - anything more than 4 exact consecutively words would considered copyvio). To avoid copyright infringement, one needs uses his/her own words to convey the source’s information. Paraphrasing could minimize the the copyright violation; however, "threshold" ultimately, court judgement would determined the if copyright violation has been made.

Copyvio for texts or images shared the same notion that it is not a copyvio if the verbatim texts or images are taken from free licence and Public domain sites/specific page/image. Always check the "original source" even if in WikiCommon the editor who upload the image claim taken from a PD site, we need to check the link provided and if the site indicate the image taken from another source, then we check the source. For texts, we need to check the sites if it is a PD, sometimes the disclaimer of PD is not on the page, but on the home page or "about" page or FAQ page. Secondly, for older article (no in NPP Feed), any copyvio texts found, we will revdel it as it is almost always it is not the first versions. If a small amount of verbatim texts found in NPP Feed articles, we would revdel them; but large amount of verbatim texts we will tag G12.

Lastly, here are a few examples where the German car maker Audi was sued for copyright breach.

1. Audi infringed copyright violation over Eminem’s song “Lose Yourself” in their commercial advertising. [4]

2. Audi was fined US $ 965,000 over copyright infringement for using 10 words from Brian Andreas’s story of “Angel of Mercy” - [5]

I think I just had a wake-up call, and it was disguised as a car, and it was screaming at me not to get too comfortable and fall asleep and miss my life. (Audi commercial) Some people don’t know that there are angels whose only job is to make sure you don’t get too comfortable & fall asleep & miss your life.(Brian Andreas’ print)

Spot COI / PAID COI editors are permitted to edit Wikipedia and create on the affected articles; however, it is "HIGHLY DISCOURAGE/NOT RECOMMENDED as it is very difficult for the COI editors to write the article/input info into the affected article in [[WP:NPOV|neutral point of view}}.

1.Use person pronouns and possessives (I, we, my, our) 2.Multiple references to company, financial listings, staff lists, interviews, own publication, press release, blog and with clean references 3.Well written prose 'too perfect to be true' and only with single/2 edits 4.Editors have created multiple company related articles 5.Editors disclosed their COI/PAID in their userpage (not tag with COI disclose), or disclosure when they ask question in WP:Teahouse, WP:Help Desk, WP:AFCHD or receivers' talk pages.

A7/A9/A11 - Credible claim of significance - If the subject content do have such claim, then it is not a A7 even the article at the present stage of the article is not notable. Choose other method. (1) after a WP:BEFORE and found no independent reliable sources to support the notability requirements, then nominated for WP:AFD, or R2 to draft space if no sources are provided (do R2 sparingly). If it is a WP:BLP without source, then WP:BLPPROD or R2. - see Wikipedia:Credible claim of significance

Hope the above help. Note the above does not substitute the Wikipedia links and reading material I provided.

Filtering - Deletion policy & other alternatives edit

In assignment 4, we look at articles which fits in WP:Criteria for speedy deletion (CSD) where by the the articles are deleted within a few hours to 24 hours from the time of the nomination. In Assignment 5, we discuss the what actions should be taken for those articles do not fit under the CSD criteria but do not meet relevant criteria for content of the encyclopedia.

Please read WP:PROD, WP:BLPPROD, WP:MERGE, WP:DRAFTIFY, WP:NPPDRAFT and WP:REDIR, WP:AFD and answer the following questions. (Provide links and hisdiff where they are applied.)

1. Under what circumstances do we propose deletion (PROD) a page and why do we do that?

Answer: Propose deletion on uncontroversial pages, that are abandoned and do not fit CSD criteria. When the PROD tag has been up for a week with no objection, the page is deleted by an admin.

2. What should we do before we PROD a page? and what should be considered /action during a nomination?

Answer: You should make sure the article hasn't been discussed before, at another PROD or at an AfD. You should also make sure the article is not salvagable; make sure that deletion is the last-resort option.

3. What is the criteria when nominated a BLPPROD? If we choose not to BLPPROD a page what are the alternatives? (give three examples with explanations)

Answer: It's for Biographies of living people that are unsourced. Check that it has no sources, check that you can find no sources, check that it doesn't meet CSD, check it hasn't been vandalised to remove sources, and remove any unsourced statements.

4. In what circumstances we nominate an AFD and what step should be done prior such action.

Answer: An article that you don't believe is notable enough for wikipedia, else fails to meet other criteria for inclusion, but needs a discussion to be held, as it's not as clear-cut or obvious as a potential CSD or PROD.

5 How long do PROD, BLPPROD and AFD last prior it is deleted or decline?

Answer: Each one lasts a week.

6. When a page has been previously BLPROD and was provide a source; however if you still think that article should be deleted, what can you do?

Answer: Nominate it for AfD, if you still feel that it fails SNG for people.

7. When do we decide whether an article should be PROD or WP:BLPROD or WP:AFD?

Answer: Check that the article can't be improved. If it doesn't fit the CSD criteria, PROD. If it's a BLP, BLPPROD. If it might be more controversial, AFD.

8. What are the reason to WP:Merge a page to another page?

Answer: If one article contains information that could easily be an additional part of another article, and doesn't meet the criteria to be a standalone article.

9. List 10 reasons we purpose WP:REDIR.

Answer:

  1. If an article is moved, a redirect needs to be there so as to not break links from other pages or sites.
  2. If an article name is commonly misspelled
  3. If an article incorporates information about another topic that doesn't meet criteria to be a different article.
  4. If an article name could be written with different punctuation
  5. If an article name could be written with different case
  6. If an article name could be pluralised
  7. If an article name is often an acronym
  8. Surnames of people who are often known by their surname should redirect to their full name.
  9. If an article name contains accents, it should have a non-accented redirect for keyboards without accents.
  10. Former names of things should redirect to their current name.
10. When article can be moved to draft space?

Answer: If it could potentially meet notability guidelines, but doesn't meet quality guidelines enough to be in mainspace.

11. Nominate 5 articles for WP:AFD by using WP:Twinkle and provide explanation of your nomination.

Answer 1:Ayr College - It was a no longer functioning college with no references about it online. It had since been merged into another school, so the AfD ended with Redirect.

Answer 2:Robert Šulgan - Failed the specific notability guideline for boxers.

Answer 3:Dis Morning - I couldn't find any online refs, and the AfD ended as Redirect.

Answer 4:Mizo Phyll - Quite clearly non-notable but not uncontroversial enough for PROD

Answer 5:Jama Mohamud Takar - a politician, but not one who had ever held office, and the tone was quite promotional.

12. Participate in 5 WP:AFD where by you are the first voter of the discussion. Please provide you reason either to delete, keep, redirect or merge.

Answer 1:Double Player - I searched, and couldn't find any Reliable sources demonstrating significant coverage, so I voted delete.

Answer 2:Jai Bajarangabhali - Failed SNG for films.

Answer 3:One Globe Conference - Was pretty spammy.

Answer 4:Nicholas Montgomery Black - Failed WP:NACADEMIC.

Answer 5:Party of Alberta - Curiously I was the only one who voted in this AfD. Anyway, it failed WP:NORG

13. Nominate 2 articles for WP:PROD and state your reasons.

Answer 1:Wf360 - Was unambiguously non-notable, barely referenced

Answer 2:Dixiana (train) - Absolutely no sources online.

14. Nominate 2 article for WP:BLPROD and state your reasons.

Answer 1:Andrés Andreani - Non-notable person

Answer 2:

15.Nominate 2 article for WP:NPPDRAFT and state your reasons.

Answer 1:Draft:Smoogle - sent to draftspace because it was an already previously deleted page, and was not ready for draftspace.

Answer 2:Draft:The responsibility of lab workers - had one paragraph, only one citation, and it was a blog.

WikiMacaroons Hi, This would be the last difficult assignment besides the final exam. Assignments 6-10 are somewhat easy. Let me knwo if you have any questions and stay safe. Best. Cassiopeia(talk) 05:24, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
@Cassiopeia: Hi cass, thanks for the assignment. Question: Do the AFDs I nominate have to be deleted in the end? Thanks, WikiMacaroonsCinnamon? 14:15, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
WikiMacaroons Hi Macaroons, There are AfD questions in the assignment - (A) (5 examples) is you nominate for delete and the (B) (5 examples) that you are the first voter which the page is nominated by other editors. For (A) you after reading the article and check with the GNG, SNG gudilines and do a WP:BEFORE (very important) and if you decide the article fails GNG and SNG then nominate the article for delete. To answer your question, the article need to be deleted after the discussions/vote byt other editors. If the article you you nonimated outcome is a keep, then it means you had nominated wronly. For (B) read the explanation from the nominator, the article and check the existing sources and do a WP:BEFORE (very important) and check the GNG and associated SNG guidelines, and determine if the article should be deleted, kept, redirected, drafted or merged. Do always give your reason/explanation/ judgetification when you vote especially it needs to be aligned with notability guidelines. Take a look at the previous nominations, the dicussion and the results at WP:AFD and observe how other editors provide the reasons and the associate result decided by the admins first to gain some knowdelge of how things work. Let me know if you have further quesions. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 00:31, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
@Cassiopeia: Hi, I've been working on these assignments, but I've been having a bit of trouble finding articles that can be nominated for PROD or BLPPROD. Could you please advise the best way to find articles that are eligible for PROD? Thanks, WikiMacaroonsCinnamon? 14:41, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
WikiMacaroons For AfD, PROD, PRODBLP and all CSDs - you could find them at [New Pages Feed. Make sure the blue bottom is on "New Page Patrol". This is the section where by new articles have just been created (from recent months to to date). (note for CSD 11 and CSD 12 - you cand find them at "New Page Patrol" (NPP) and "Article for Creation" (AfC) section. DO NOT nominate any other criteria other than CSD 12 and CSD 11 in AfC section". Let me know if anything else I could help. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 01:02, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
