From a discussion at Template talk:Find a Grave#Summary of points regarding updating the content on the Template:Find a Grave page.
Key points are:
- Use of Find a Grave as a reference or external link is limited and context dependent
Reference:
- Find a Grave is not a reliable source for biographical information.
- It can only be used as a source for memorial data when all conditions are met:
- There are no fully reliable sources which may be used
- At least one of the two:
- There is a photograph of a gravestone (See also Verifiability of a reliable source) - or -
- The record was created by the Veterans Administration (VA), Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) or American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC)
- The pages for the person do not have unlicensed copyright information (e.g., professional portrait photography or copies of obituaries from a newspaper)
- If it cannot be used as a reference, then the Find a Grave reference should be replaced with a {{citation needed|date=}} tag or a more reliable source
External links:
- Find a Grave can be used as an external link if it meets the following conditions:
- At least one of the three:
- A gravestone photograph is on the website - or -
- The person is a designated "famous person", thereby subject to Find a Grave editorial control - or -
- The record was created by the Veterans Administration (VA), Commonwealth Graves Commission (CGC) or American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC)
- The pages for the person do not have unlicensed copyright inform1ation (e.g., professional portrait photography or copies of obituaries from a newspaper)
- The scenario is not one of the restrictions on linking
- Find a Grave is not used as a reference
- There is information on the site that is not covered by the Wikipedia article
- There is not a circular reference to Wikipedia (WP:FORK and WP:CIRCULAR)
- At least one of the three:
