Fapto Newspaper

“Fapto” was an International Free Press newspaper, launched in Thanet in the early 1980’s It was co founded by Nigel, Rod Fisher, Keith Grindley and Jane. It specialised in music reviews, band interviews, pieces on alternative living and articles that try to point out Government failings. It had a wide readership in the south east of the country but was selling well nationally and even internationally. An advertisement was placed for interested people to come and assist. We were lucky to get Alan Bibby who drew the front cover for issue No 1.

“Fapto was "an attempt to form an alternative paper based outside London ... The naivety of much of the content showed the great gulf between Fato's good intentions and the harsh realities of commercial newspaper production. However its graphics were excellent. Succeeded by 'New Fapto'" (Noyce, 'The Directory of British Alternative Periodicals 1965-1974', page 97).” [3] https://www.biblio.com/book/fapto-counterculture-newspaper/d/1361874887

It went on sale for 15 pence and now fetches £10-12 on eBay. The paper had inevitable links with Hawkwind as Keith, Robert Calvert and Nik Turner all lived in the Margate area. John Greves who later took over on keyboards for Hawkwind also lived in the area, and contributed to record reviews. Keith also worked closely with Robert Calvert In preparing the prototype of the Space Ritual log book. It ran for about 7-8 years before folding, though has since been rereleased as New Fapto. [4] “Succeeded by 'New Fapto'" (Noyce, 'The Directory of British Alternative Periodicals 1965-1974', page 97) Out of the original crew, only Nigel Spratling is involved with this resurrection.
