Cash-Back and Rewards Applications

edit

Ibotta is one of the most popular cash-back apps for groceries. Since its launch in 2012, Ibotta has had nearly 22 million downloads and paid over $200 million dollars in cash back to its users.

Cash-Back and Rewards Applications provide users with a digital alternative to clipping traditional coupons on items such as groceries, travel, gas, and clothes.  Users can link rewards cards from their favorite stores to the application in order to automatically save on selected items. Unlike traditional coupon clipping where money is saved before the purchase, with cash-back applications, users save money after the transaction, more like a rebate.

Getting Started

edit

Different cash-back and rewards applications can be downloaded to a mobile device, accessed using a browser extension, or by navigating to a website. Some companies offer multiple options.  Users must then sign up through the app using a login such as an email address or Facebook account to receive discounts, cash-back, or rewards.  There are often cash incentives provided to users just for signing up.  If the application offers a cash-back option, the user must select to be paid either by check or by a payment application, such as PayPal.  Multiple cash-back and rewards applications can be used at one time, which is one of the main benefits vs. traditional coupon clipping.

Online and In-Store Shopping

edit

The former popular, Ebates, is now owned by Rakuten.

Users can take advantage of discounts, rebates, and cash back by shopping online or in a brick and mortar retail store.  Users can search online for deals, promo codes, and cash-back offers to help them save money.  Products can be shipped right to the user.  In-store shopping applications offer users the ability to choose which products they would like to purchase at the store. Once the user goes to the store and completes their transaction, the application notifies the user that a reward has been received and the money goes into their account.  Most applications force users to wait until a certain monetary threshold has been met before the money may be released to the user. Some applications now offer payment options at the register for mobile devices, with discounted incentives.
