The Brazilian National Archives (in Portuguese: Arquivo Nacional) were created in 1838 under the name of "Imperial Public Archives". They took their present name in 1911. It is located in Rio de Janeiro.

The building housed from 1868, the old Brazilian Mint, which operated in it until 1983. It is a jewel built in Neoclassical style with gneiss stone by the engineers Antonio Pinheiro Guimarães Francisco and Teodoro Antonio de Oliveira. Access is given through a portal of classical composition with three pediments on the same facade, a solution which gives a palatial grandeur to the building.

The archive collection include 1.74 million photographs and negatives, 20,000 illustrations, 44,000 maps, 124,000 films and 4,000 videotapes. The library holds collections on history, library science and law with 43,000 volumes, 900 newspapers and 6,300 rare works.

The National Archives offers several services, including in-person research services (http://www.arquivonacional.gov.br/br/?option=com_content&view=article&id=593) and providing copies and transcriptions of documents to remote users (http://www.arquivonacional.gov.br/br/?option=com_content&view=article&id=594).

The Maria Beatriz Nascimento National Archives Library was created by decree in 1867, gained its current name in 2017, and houses books, periodicals, and leaflets.
