Location of the Torres Strait Islands

Wednesday Island, also called Mawain or Maururra, is a small uninhabited island of the Torres Strait Islands. It belongs to the Australian state Queensland and is located 3.2 km north of the much bigger island Moa. Only the small Tuesday Islands, which are 2.5 km in the South-East, are closer to the island. Wednesday Island is the northernmost island of the Thursday Islands.

Wednesday Island belongs administratively to the Inner Islands, the Southern region of the administrative district Torres Shire.

The almost completely wooded island is surrounded by a Coral Reef. It reaches its biggest height of 91 meters in the Southern central area. An elevation of 84 meters is close to the Ince Point, the Northern peak of the island. A lighthouse is located at the Ince Point.[1]

Etymology edit

The western name of the island comes from the captain William Bligh, who traversed the Torres Strait from the 2nd June (Tuesday) to the 5th June (Friday) 1789 westward (Kupang). Some of the islands he passed were called after the week days of his four-day trip Tuesday Islands, Wednesday Island, Thursday Island and Friday Island. Sunday Island, which he passed on the previous sunday, the 31st May 1789, is cocated 200 kilometers southeast of the Torres Strait Islands near the East coast of the Cape York Peninsula.[2]

Wednesday Island was habitated sometime.[3]
