Ashutosh shah[1], born 28th January 1985, is an Indian Film Director and Producer known for his production house R.A.T films[2] which was founded in March 2015.He is married to Charishma Zaveri Shah.

Early life and Education edit

Ashutosh shah is born and brought up in Mumbai, completed his education from Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics. He was always interested in dramatics and arts. In his school days he would paint and direct and act in plays. This passion was carried forwarded in his junior college days where he got a lot of participation and acclaim in the college festivals of Umang and Malhar where he actively did theatre. He was an active member of IPTA as well.

He pursued specialization in advertising through KC College – Bachelors of Mass Media.

He was always drawn towards motion picture and the moving image. He drew inspiration from his interactions with Santosh Sivan and Suhas Gujarati who introduced him to photography and the world of movies.

His first documentary on Naxalism which was a group project won a lot of critical acclaim and awards. It was screened at various national and international film festivals. Sudhir Mishra who was one of the judges in one such festival inducted him and his partner now Taher Shabbir in his crew of Khoya Khoya Chand and started his Bollywood journey.

Ashutosh worked as assistant director to Sudhir on Khoya Khoya Chand and his Associate directors and 2nd Unit director on Tera Kya Hoga Johnny, The Ball ( part of Mumbai Cutting) . Later on he was part of blockbusters like Once Upon a time in Mumbai and Agneepath as 1st Assistant Director.

Ashutosh as a 1st Assistant Director has worked with some of the leading International Ad Film directors and Indian Directors like Prakash Varma and has done close to 300 commercials.

He was 2nd Unit Director on Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Fitoor, Guilty.

His debut as a director was Skoda Prize Film which was distinct and got him noticed in the advertising world. His next one was a big multi star ensemble music video for adult literacy called Shiksha Ka Suraj, which was termed as the new mile sur mera tumhara of the millennium. It featured stars like Sharukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Anil Kapoor, Priyanaka Chopra and Shabana Azmi.

His 3 min short film on renowned architect B.V Doshi also won a lot of international acclaim.

Subsequently, he started the production company R.A.T Films with two partners Ruchi Narain and Taher Shabbir which has done over a hundred commercials for a variety of products as well as produced the animation film Hanuman: Da' Damdaar (2017). It was the biggest animation film release in India ever, voiced by the superstar Salman Khan and featuring a litany of Bollywood stars; Raveena Tandon, Javed Akhtar, Kunal Khemu, Vinay Pathak, Chunky Pandey, Saurabh Shukla and Makrand Deshpande. He has also Showrun, Produced and directed six episodes for the recent web series 'Hundred'(2020) on the platform Disney+Hotstar which he and his partners have Created, written and Produced. The show is a light irreverent take on two very different women who struggle to do what they want to do in the city of Mumbai. One of them played by Lara Dutta is a Police woman who feels she can't break the glass ceiling and the other is a young girl, played by Rinku Rajguru who finds she has only a hundred days to live. Together, they try and make themselves count.
