Award envy or barnstar envy is an obsession with your own lack of awards or an enviousness towards other users who have more than you do. This may manifest itself in feelings of inadequacy or ingratitude for a perceived lack of appreciation and recognition of your contributions to Wikipedia. Consequently, your behavior becomes directed towards receiving awards from other users, making the accumulation of awards an end unto itself.

The following symptoms may indicate manifestations of award envy:

  • Checking other editor's user pages for awards they may have received and either feeling envious towards those who have more than you do, or superior to those who have less or none.
  • Contemplating becoming an admin for the primary purpose of accumulating awards from grateful users as a result of your admin work or making this your primary reason for becoming an admin.
  • Are you sacrificing time and effort in real life in order to attain these awards and if so, is it to your detriment?

The value of Wikipedia awards is subjective and their value outside of Wikipedia is dubious. If you think that you may be experiencing award envy, it may be helpful to take the time for some self-reflection along these lines:

  • What were your motivations for signing up and contributing to Wikipedia in the first place? What are they now?
  • Will the accrual of awards make you personally satisfied, or leave you felling empty?

It may be helpful to keep in mind that the soldiers who were awarded the United States' highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, had their own motivations for taking the actions that they did which resulted in them receiving this award. If they knew beforehand that the price they might have to pay might be dismemberment or death, do you think that they would still have done what they did?

You don't have an awards page or one highlighting your DYK contribs edit

Might I ask why? You're one of the few, few users I've seen who doesn't mention things like these. BrokenSphereMsg me 15:59, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

I just don't think that's very important. I'm not here for the awards. The articles I wrote or contributed to that I like are on my user page and I think that's good enough.--Carabinieri 16:04, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
You're a rare breed. That's commendable. BrokenSphereMsg me 16:11, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
