In the fictional Warriors series, there are four groups of cats organized into a system of Clans that inhabit a forest. These four Clans are ThunderClan, WindClan, RiverClan, and ShadowClan. There is also a fifth Clan, SkyClan, that lives in a gorge far from the forest. In addition to the Clans is a Tribe of feral cats and also multiple groups of unassociated cats. The Clans and Tribe each have developed their own societies organized under a system of hierarchy and code through which the cats live by.

The Warrior Clans

edit

Clan Hierarchy

edit

Leader

edit

At the top of the Clan is the leader, whose name always ends with "-star". This cat is almost always the former deputy, who took over after the previous leader died. In special cases, like those of Nightstar and Tigerstar, non-deputies of the Clan can inherit the position of leader.

Leaders must commune with StarClan personally to receive their leader name and the special gift to leaders from StarClan: nine lives. Every time a leader is killed, StarClan heals the wound that killed them and returns them to life. Sometimes, however, the wound is too grievous to heal, in the case of Tigerstar, who lost all of his nine lives at once, or in the case of what would have happened when Firestar was in the fox trap, had Brambleclaw tightened the loop. In special cases, as with Nightstar, cats who may not have been chosen by StarClan may not receive their nine lives. Instead, they remain with only one life.

Leaders decide the warrior cat names for an apprentice before their warrior ceremony and is the one who makes most announcements through Clan meetings from a designated spot; in ThunderClan it was the Highrock/Highledge. They also arrange hunting and border patrols with the deputy.

As long as an Clan's old leader is alive, a new one cannot receive StarClan's gift of nine lives. When ThunderClan and ShadowClan drove Brokentail out and Nightstar became ShadowClan's new leader, he did not receive his nine lives, as Brokentail was still living and StarClan still recognized him as ShadowClan's leader.

Deputy

edit

Directly below the leader is the deputy, who organizes everyday activities in the Clan, such as patrols. However, they still must hunt and patrol like regular warriors. The only requirement to become a deputy is to have mentored at least one apprentice. StarClan can also send visions that in some way suggest who the next deputy should be, even if that cat has never mentored an apprentice, as was the case of Brambleclaw. The leader decides who the deputy would be if the former deputy is killed or injured badly. However, they can retire, in the case of Tawnyspots, the ThunderClan deputy before Bluestar. Some deputies can be chosen when one is banned from the Clan, like Tigerstar.

A new deputy is chosen if the current one is captured, driven into exile, killed, retired, or another event that renders them unable to do their tasks. The decision must be made before the midnight of the night that the current deputy is unable to be deputy anymore. Sometimes the medicine cat of a Clan will receive a sign from StarClan saying who the new deputy should be, as in the case of Brambleclaw. The deputy is usually a senior warrior and therefore is an experienced cat. The deputy is next in line to become leader, should the current leader lose all nine of their lives.

Medicine Cat

edit

One of the most respected cats in the Clan is the medicine cat, who not only heals the cats of the Clan, but interprets signs from StarClan to receive advice and prophecies. They are not required to fight, but they do know basic fighting moves shown when Leafpool taught Hollyleaf. Medicine cats have their own code, much like the warrior code. They walk closer with StarClan than even leaders, and very few cats will argue with a medicine cat. Medicine cats are forbidden to have kits or take mates. Neither gender of medicine cat is an exception to the rule. A warrior who later becomes a medicine cat is also forbidden from having any additional kits. Medicine cats are responsible for learning of the various herbs in their area, and where to find them, so as to treat any cats that may fall ill or be injured. Medicine Cats also must retain a neutrality with other Medicine Cats. Although in the beginning Jayfeather did not like Leafpool helping Littlecloud after their battle with ShadowClan, he slowly begins to ignore clan battles and help other Medicine Cats.

Every half-moon, medicine cats travel to share dreams with StarClan. They also have to go to the Moonstone or Moonpool area. If for some reason there is no Clan deputy to take over leadership after the current leader is not with the Clan (i.e. Brokentail's exile with Blackstar), the medicine cat asks StarClan who the new leader should be. Also, medicine cats can travel to Moonstone or Moonpool on their leader's request (i.e. Leafpool visiting Moonpool when Firestar wanted to know if Graystripe or Brambleclaw should be deputy).

Elders

edit

Elders are retired warriors, deputies, and medicine cats. They are very respected and are cared for by apprentices. The elders' only known duties are to perform the burial of a deceased Clanmate and defend the nursery in fierce battle when their camp is attacked. They often give advice to the Clan leader and share stories of passed events with the younger cats.

A warrior becomes an elder when they have reached an age where they cannot keep up with warrior duties, or for other reasons that force them to retire early. Examples of this are failing sight (as was Longtail's case), hearing loss or deafness (Snowkit was an example of this), and serious injury (such as Brightheart and Cinderpelt's former situations).

Warriors

edit

Warriors are cats that do most of the work for the Clan, such as hunting, patrolling borders, training apprentices, and discussing most gathering matters. They are toms and she-cats who are not caring for kits. As an apprentice, their names ended with "-paw", but now the suffix changes to a different word such as body parts (tail, ear, claw, fur, pelt, foot, tooth, fang, eyes, nose, stripe, throat, whisker, wing, feather, belly, heart, spots, face, leg, dapple), surroundings (pool, stream, leaf, flower, brook, poppy, berry, bird, song), movement (flight, step, fall, watcher), or weather (storm, frost, wind, cloud).

Warriors are some of the most important cats in the Clan. They hunt daily, patrol borders, train apprentices, and fight for their Clan even at the cost of their own lives. Warriors always follow the warrior code. A warrior is only given one apprentice at a time, although they are permitted to help train other apprentices. For example, although Lionheart was already mentoring Graystripe (Into the Wild), he also shared Firestar's training with Tigerstar for a time, until Firestar was given a permanent mentor (Bluestar). Warriors may also have kits.

Being a warrior is usually the longest period of time in a Clan cat's life, unless they are the medicine cat, leader, or promoted to deputy. A she-cat can also choose to stay as a queen and look after kits in the nursery until they retire, like Goldenflower and Ferncloud.

Queen

edit

Queens are she-cats expecting or nursing kits. They stay in the nursery until their kits are apprenticed, then return to being warriors. Queens are not entirely restricted to the nursery or the camp. They are allowed to go hunting and a queen may also take her kits out of camp for a short while. A queen has the right to keep the identity of her kits' father a secret, even from the leader or the kits themselves, as Bluestar did with her kits, Stonefur and Mistyfoot. Goldenflower also hid the identity of Brambleclaw and Tawnypelt's father for a while from them, even though the rest of the Clan knew. Silverstream had planned to hide the identity of Stormfur's and Feathertail's father, who was Graystripe, before she died bearing them. When Yellowfang gave birth to Brokenstar, her mate Raggedstar did the exact opposite. Since Yellowfang was the medicine cat, and not allowed to have kits, Raggedstar refused to tell any cat who Brokentail's mother was, and Brokentail only found out right before Yellowfang killed him.

Naturally, the queens' den is close to the medicine cat's den, so that the medicine cat can give them herbs if a queen goes into labor.

Apprentice

edit

When a kit reaches six moons old, they are apprenticed. Their name, which formerly ended in "-kit", now ends with "-paw", to signify the path their paws are now on. They are assigned a mentor, who can be a warrior, deputy, medicine cat (if the apprentice plans to become the next medicine cat), or even the leader (Bluestar was Firestar's mentor, for instance, however, the leader's apprentice doesn't necessarily become deputy or leader). Apprentices also care for the elders in their Clan. They are allowed to travel within Clan territory, with their mentor, or other experienced warrior and are also allowed to go to Gatherings at full-moons, if they are permitted by their leader and mentor.

After several moons of training, and a journey to the Moonstone/Moonpool, an apprentice is given their warrior name and proclaimed a full warrior of their Clan. Traditionally, the new warrior's first task is to hold vigil and stand guard over the camp all night until dawn. The average apprenticeship, no matter which type, lasts from about four to eight moons.

When it comes to a medicine cat apprentice, they have much different training than warrior apprentices, as they must learn how to heal their Clanmates and interpret signs from StarClan. Also unlike a warrior apprentice, a medicine cat apprentice is given their full name at the Moonstone/Moonpool by their mentor, in the presence of the other Clans' medicine cats. Although a medicine cat apprentice can be given their full name, they will still be considered the apprentice of the current medicine cat until they succeed their mentor.

At the lowest level are kits. Their name always ends in "-kit". These are cats younger than six moons old. They are restricted due to their age and are not permitted to leave the camp without parental supervision. It is against the warrior code for kits to hunt. They have no duties in the Clan, and spend most of their time playing with each other in mock fights or they play alone with moss balls, leaves, or puddles. After their sixth moon, a kit is made an apprentice, and given to a warrior to mentor them.

After Raggedstar's death (during Brokentail's leadership from before and during most of Into the Wild), Brokenstar had ShadowClan's kits begin their training at three moons of age, and he named them full warriors at five moons.

History of the Clans

edit

According to Secrets of the Clans, cats came into the forest. They traveled in small groups, but weren't Clans yet. There were many battles for food and territory, but there was no warrior code or StarClan to honor. Eventually, when the cats gathered around at Fourtrees, cats fought. Many cats died that night. When the cats alive awoke, they saw the spirits of their deceased loved ones. They told them that they had to unite or die. Four cats, Shadow, Wind, Thunder, and River all thought that they should be the leader of the united group of cats. The dead spirits told them to divide the territory among them. They told them to bring their Clans to Fourtrees at the next full moon, and then they would be given eight more lives. They told them to decide a warrior code. Thunder, River, Wind, and Shadow agreed and did what the new StarClan told them to.

The Warrior Code

edit

The warrior code is a series of strict laws laid down by StarClan for all of the Clans to follow. While the exact code is not listed anywhere, it is clear to all Clans what the rules in the warrior code are. There are countless other laws in the warrior code. If warriors break this code, a punishment, whether it be from a duty involving caring for the elders to exile to even death, will undoubtedly result. The punishment depends on the severity of the broken code and the Clan leader themself. For example, if an apprentice had been caught eating during a hunting mission, they may be punished simply by not being allowed to take any fresh-kill for the rest of the day. Another example could be if a cat betrayed their Clan. The Clan leader may decide to exile them as proper punishment.

As written in Secrets of the Clans, the tenets warrior code are:

  • Defend your Clan, even with your life. You may have friendships with cats from other Clans, but your loyalty must remain to your Clan, as one day you may meet them in battle.
  • One should never hunt or trespass on another Clan's territory.
Punishment: Most cats are attacked if found.
  • Elders and Queens must be fed before apprentices and warriors. Unless they have permission, apprentices may not eat until they have hunted to feed the elders.
Punishment: The offender is usually given no food for the rest of the day.
  • Prey is killed only to be eaten. Give thanks to StarClan for its life.
  • A kit must be at least six moons old to become an apprentice.
  • Newly appointed warriors will keep a silent vigil for one night after receiving their warrior name.
  • A cat cannot be made deputy without having mentored at least one apprentice.
  • The deputy will become Clan leader when the leader dies or retires.
  • After the death or retirement of the deputy, the new deputy must be chosen before moonhigh.
  • A gathering of all four Clans is held at the full moon during a truce that lasts for the night. There shall be no fighting among the Clans at this time.
  • Boundaries must be checked and marked. Challenge all trespassing cats.
  • No warrior may neglect a kit in pain or in danger, even if that kit is from a different Clan.
  • The word of the Clan leader is the warrior code.
  • An honorable warrior does not need to kill other cats to win his or her battles, unless they are outside the warrior code or it is necessary for self-defense.
  • A warrior rejects the soft life of a kittypet.

Other things regarding the warrior code, as implied by the Clan cats, are:

  • The Clan is to be fed before any individual cat.
Punishment: Usually, the offending warrior gets no prey for a day.
  • The safety of the Clan is more important than that of any individual cat.
  • Each Clan has specific borders.
Punishment: Usually, a conflict or battle will take place regarding the boundary.
  • Prey is not to be stolen from another Clan's territory.
  • Clan borders are not to be crossed (unless of special occasions going to the Moonstone/Moonpool, or, at the lake, crossing one another's territory to get to Gatherings)
Punishment: The crosser can be attacked by a border patrol.
  • A Gathering lasts as long as the moon is highest in the sky.
  • There is a truce during the Gathering.
  • Under no circumstances may the truce be broken.
Punishment: Clouds will cover the moon, showing StarClan's anger.
  • Medicine cats may not fall in love nor have kits.
Punishment: The cat, if female, will be forced to give up her kits.
  • Cats may not fall in love with nor have kits with cats from other Clans.
  • Kits must be at least six moons old to be an apprentice.
  • Kits may not leave the camp without permission.
Punishment: Depends on the kit's mother or father; the offending kit usually must stay in the nursery. However, depending on the severity, kits' apprenticeship may be delayed.
  • Kits may not learn to hunt until they are apprenticed.
Punishment: Usually, the kit will have to stay in the nursery.
  • Apprentices must accompany the leader to Highstones/the Moonpool as a part of their training.
  • Newly made warriors must sit vigil for their first night and guard the camp in silence.
  • Warriors may not kill in cold blood.
Punishment: The cat may be exiled.
  • Warriors must show compassion.
  • A deputy must be chosen before moonhigh of the previous deputy's resignation or death.
  • To be a deputy a cat must have had an apprentice.
  • Warriors may not attack a medicine cat.
  • Cats have free passage to the Highstone/Moonpool.
  • There may be no more nor less than four Clans in the forest.
  • Strangers should be driven from a Clan's territory.
  • Cats should show mercy to cats who ask for help.
  • Warriors do not fight to kill; they fight to prove their strength and defend their territory.
  • Cats must stay within two tail-lengths from the lake on the way to Gatherings/Moonpool (Starlight onwards).

The Clans

edit

The five Clans of forest cats are ThunderClan, ShadowClan, WindClan, RiverClan, and StarClan. Although BloodClan was called a Clan, it was not a true Clan because of its cats' disbelief in StarClan and the warrior code. There is a sixth Clan, called SkyClan, though they don't live anywere near the forest Clans. SkyClan used to live in the forest long ago, but it was driven out by the other four, and they fled, following the river until they reached rocky cliffs next to a gorge, where they made their new home.

ThunderClan

edit

ThunderClan is the most prominent Clan in the novels. They are said to have the most loyal warriors and the bravest. Many of the novels' protagonists are from ThunderClan. The hero of the first six books, Firestar, lives in this Clan and (later on) leads it. In addition, other main characters from the original six novels like Graystripe, Sandstorm, Spottedleaf, and Cinderpelt are from this Clan. In the second series, three of the protagonists: Brambleclaw, Squirrelflight, and Leafpool are from ThunderClan. All the novels are told from the perspective of ThunderClan as well, with the exception of Moonrise, when the Clans are not active parts of the story. In addition, several prologues are told from the perspective of other Clans. Also, ThunderClan has welcomed more kittypets and loners into the Clan, starting with Rusty (Firestar) than any other Clan.

ThunderClan is at home inside a forest where their main prey is squirrels, mice, voles, rabbits, and birds. The name ThunderClan came from their first leader, Thunder, and the fact that they live by a Thunderpath (as the official Warriors website says). Their signature way of hunting is the use of the "hunter's crouch" when they slowly creeping up on prey they kill it.

An interesting note is that by the end of the second series, ThunderClan has had the most medicine cats (Spottedleaf, Yellowfang, Cinderpelt, and Leafpool), and the most deputies.

RiverClan

edit

RiverClan plays several large parts in the Warriors story. These include the time when Graystripe falls in love with a RiverClan cat, Silverstream, and has kits with her, but Silverstream dies bearing them. Graystripe then allows those kits to stay in RiverClan, and joins RiverClan for a time, although he is later accepted back into ThunderClan after being exiled from RiverClan by Leopardstar for saving Firestar's life in a battle for the Sunningrocks. Another example is when RiverClan joins with ShadowClan and form TigerClan, under the ShadowClan leader Tigerstar. The next part they have played is the emergence of the son of Tigerstar, Hawkfrost, who shows signs of treachery. In Moonrise, the story is told from two RiverClan cats', Stormfur and Feathertail, points of view. In Starlight, Hawkfrost sides with Mudclaw in a rebellion against WindClan. In Sunset, Hawkfrost tempts Brambleclaw to kill Firestar when he is caught in a fox trap. An interesting note is that ThunderClan has had the most kits with RiverClan (Stonefur, Mistyfoot, Feathertail, and Stormfur).

RiverClan cats are the ones with most tolerance to water. They have slim bodies which allows them to swim better and sleek fur which dries faster. They are also the only Clan whose main prey is fish. Their camp is always located near a body of water, especially a river.

Current Positions as of The Sight
edit
  • Leader: Leopardstar
  • Deputy: Mistyfoot
  • Medicine cat: Mothwing
  • Warriors: Voletooth, Reedwhisker, Blackclaw, Mosspelt, Beechfur, Rippletail

WindClan

edit

WindClan has been fairly prominent throughout all the novels. They are usually portrayed as the weakest of the Clans, often threatened by other Clans. Their largest role is in Fire and Ice, when they are chased out of their territory by the former ShadowClan leader Brokenstar. Another large role is when they decide to join with ThunderClan to form the temporary LionClan, used to combat TigerClan and then BloodClan.

WindClan cats enjoy open fields. They are the swiftest of all the Clans, which is a needed skill as their main prey is rabbits, which are fast and hard to catch.

Current Positions as of The Sight
edit
  • Leader: Onestar
  • Deputy: Ashfoot
  • Medicine cat: Barkface
  • Warriors: Tornear, Crowfeather, Owlwhisker, Weaselfur, Nightcloud, Whitetail, Gorsetail

  • Queens: Unnamed queen(s)
  • Elders: Morningflower, Webfoot
  • Kits: Buzzardkit, Sedgekit

ShadowClan

edit

ShadowClan has served several times in the novels as antagonists; from attacking ThunderClan early in the novels, chasing WindClan from their home, and being led by Tigerstar and plotting to take over the forest. Recently, however, they have become less evil and more ambivalent, arrogant and aloof. It is also interesting to note that they have changed leaders far more often than the other Clans.

ShadowClan cats prefer marshes and wetlands. They are considered the most fierce in battle and most opposing to kittypets and half-Clan cats in all the Clans.

Current Positions as of The Sight
edit
  • Leader: Blackstar
  • Deputy: Russetfur
  • Medicine cat: Littlecloud
  • Warriors: Oakfur, Rowanclaw, Smokefoot, Snowbird
  • Apprentices: Ivypaw (Rowanclaw), Owlpaw (Smokefoot)
  • Queens: Tawnypelt
  • Elders: Tallpoppy, Cedarheart
  • Kits: Tawnypelt's unnamed kits

SkyClan

edit

SkyClan was the lost Clan banished from the forest by the other four Clans. In the forest, its territory was downriver of ThunderClan's. When Twolegs destroyed SkyClan's territory to build the Twolegplace, SkyClan was driven out of the forest because the other Clans decided that the forest could no longer support them, even if the SkyClan cats joined the other Clans. Along with banishment from the forest, SkyClan's memory was lost from that of the forest Clans.

Even though SkyClan's leader Cloudstar vowed never to look to StarClan again, the SkyClan cats of StarClan followed their living descendants as they left the forest. SkyClan followed the river away from the forest and eventually settled in a gorge, but an army of rats from a nearby barn killed or drove away all the SkyClan cats.

Many, many seasons later, SkyClan's ancestors sought help from Firestar of ThunderClan, in order to restore the Clan. Firestar, along with his mate Sandstorm, succeeded in rebuilding the Clan and defeating the rats that had driven the first SkyClan away. Skywatcher, the last remaining warrior of SkyClan, helped Firestar rebuild SkyClan, but he died just before the battle between the rats and the cats. Firestar shared tongues with SkyClan's ancestors, and they revealed to him that Leafdapple would become Leafstar, SkyClan's leader, and her deputy would be Sharpclaw. Echosong, the newest member of SkyClan, became the medicine cat, with her amazing abilities to heal and interpret signs from her warrior ancestors.

SkyClan, like RiverClan with swimming and WindClan with running, have a special ability, which is jumping. Back in the forest, their skills were used for leaping up into trees (they slept in trees in their camp), but in their new home, they used it for leaping from rock to rock to get to their dens and the Skyrock.

Current Positions as of Firestar's Quest
edit
  • Leader: Leafstar
  • Deputy: Sharpclaw
  • Medicine cat: Echosong
  • Warriors: Patchfoot, Clovertail, Sparrowpelt, Cherrytail
  • Apprentices: Rockpaw (Cherrytail), Bouncepaw (Patchfoot), Tinypaw (Sparrowpelt)
  • Queens: Petalnose
  • Elders: None
  • Kits: Sagekit, Mintkit

StarClan

edit

StarClan is a massive Clan made up of the spirits of departed Clan cats, and they are the ancestors of ThunderClan, ShadowClan, WindClan, and RiverClan. They are also the ancestors of SkyClan, although SkyClan's spirits are no longer in the forest.

StarClan are represented by Silverpelt (we call it the Milky Way), and made up of the spirits of departed cats. Each star in Silverpelt is said to represent one dead warrior, and all the warriors together make up StarClan. When a cat dies, they are visited by a StarClan feline, usually one they were close to, and that StarClan cat takes them to join the other departed warriors. Although StarClan is made up of cats from each Clan, the individual spirits still hold loyalty to their earthly Clans.

StarClan cats communicate with the living Clans through dreams and visions, most frequently when the living cats visit the Moonstone or Moonpool. Although StarClan is looked to for guidance and aid, StarClan does not control what happens to the Clans. Instead, the most they can do is offer help in the form of prophecies that they foretell, advice, visions, and dreams, along with giving a leader nine lives and their leader name. Even with healing, there is only so much that StarClan can do. In the case of Tigerstar, the wound given to him by Scourge was too terrible for StarClan to heal, and Tigerstar lost all nine of his lives at once.

Mythology

edit

The three great Clans are LionClan, TigerClan, and LeopardClan. They are believed to be the ancestors of the five Clans of the forest.

LionClan

edit

LionClan is believed to have been home to the ancestors of the five Clans of the forest, and is no longer in existence. LionClan cats had pure gold coats and flowing manes like the rays of the sun.

At Snakerocks, there was a huge serpent called Mouthclaw that could swallow a warrior whole. A lion named Sunpelt fought with Mouthclaw, and eventually won. Mouthclaw told him that if he spared her life, she would grant him a wish. Sunpelt wished she would shrink down to the length of a cat's tail. But Mouthclaw was too tricky, and instead of her shrinking down to the size of a cat's tail, she changed into hundreds of smaller snakes that were the size of a cat's tail. Goldenstar was angry at Sunpelt, but then he forgave him because he rid the forest of Mouthclaw. From that point on, the rocks where Mouthclaw had lived were known as Snakerocks, and the hundreds of smaller snakes became known as adders, and they gave birth to many more snakes, making Snakerocks an unsafe place for young apprentices, or even warriors.

TigerClan

edit

TigerClan is believed to have been home to the ancestors of the five Clans of the forest, and is no longer in existence. TigerClan cats had flame-colored coats and black stripes. They were known as good night hunters.

TigerClan cats were once plain orange. They were jealous because they had no distinguishing features like LionClan's flowing manes and LeopardClan's swiftness. One TigerClan warrior, named Thorntooth, was especially bitter, and he took to raiding other Clans during the night, stealing their kits and fresh-kill. He was caught stealing Goldenstar's daughter, Petalkit, and the entire Clan was punished. The light of the sun did not touch their pelts and they did not speak to cats from other Clans for one whole moon. After that they all had black stripes.

LeopardClan

edit

LeopardClan cats were the swiftest of all the cats.

One legend says that there was a wild boar named Rage loose in the forest. Fleetfoot, a LeopardClan warrior, boasts that she can kill Rage. The other Clans say that if she does, LeopardClan can have the river for one moon. But Goldenstar and Shadestar didn't tell her that Rage had a mate. Fleetfoot kills Rage, but then Rage's mate, Fury, comes. Exhausted, Fleetfoot pushes the boar off a cliff to her death. Goldenstar and Shadestar were ashamed of their treachery, so they let LeopardClan have the river forever.

The Tribes

edit

The Tribe of Rushing Water

edit

The Tribe of Rushing Water makes their home in the treacherous mountains beyond Highstones and former Clan territory. They were first introduced in the second book of The New Prophecy, Moonrise and were also mentioned in Dawn. The Tribe has no marked borders, for they have no rival Tribes, and they believe in the Tribe of Endless Hunting, their spiritual ancestors. It was noted in Secrets of the Clans that there are two other Tribes. The Tribes once lived at the lake where the Clans live now, and their Healers traveled to the Moonpool like the medicine cats do now. However, the Tribes scattered long ago. The Tribe cats live in a cave behind a large waterfall, and were formerly preyed upon by a puma named Sharptooth, before Feathertail killed him.

The Tribe cats are led by their healer, a combination of a Clan leader and medicine cat. The duties of the Tribe cats are divided into two catergories: hunting and guarding, which are done by prey-hunters and cave-guards, respectively. The decision of what a cat will become is decided at birth, from what that cat would be best at. Prey-hunters tend to be thin and lithe, while cave-guards are strong and stocky. However, it is possible for a prey-hunter to become a cave-guard and vice-versa.

Tribe Positions

edit
  • Tribe-Healer – the cat who leads the Tribe and cares for the sick cats; also the one to speak with the Tribe of Endless Hunting (the Tribe's StarClan or ancestors); the Tribe-Healer is both the leader and medicine cat of the Tribe
  • Prey-hunter – a cat that hunts for the Tribe; a cat trained specifically in hunting; generally thin and lithe
  • Cave-guard – a cat who guards the cave that they live in; also watches the sky for predators like eagles and Sharptooth (large mountain cat who preys on the Tribe) while prey-hunters hunt; a cat trained specifically in fighting; generally strong and stocky
  • To-be – a cat in training to be either a prey-hunter or a cave-guard; an apprentice
  • Kit-mother – a she-cat nursing or expecting kits; a queen

Current Positions as of Dawn

edit

These are the positions as of Dawn, besides Stormfur and Brook, as they had left.

  • Healer: Teller of the Pointed Stones (Stoneteller)
  • Prey-hunters: Gray Sky Before Dawn (Gray)
  • Cave-guards: Talon of Swooping Eagle (Talon), Jagged Rock Where Heron Sits (Jag), Rock Beneath Still Water (Rock), Bird That Sings at Dusk (Bird), Crag Where Eagles Nest (Crag), Sheer Path Beside Waterfall (Sheer), Night of No Stars (Night)
  • To-be's: Unnamed
  • Kit-mothers: Wing Shadow Over Water (Wing), Flight of Startled Heron (Flight)
  • Kits: Unnamed

The Tribe of Endless Hunting

edit

The Tribe of Endless Hunting are the ancestors of the Tribe of Rushing Water. They speak to the healer of the Tribe by sending him/her signs in leaves, rocks, water, and nature in general. They speak most clearly in the Cave of Pointed Stones, just as StarClan speak most clearly at the Moonstone or Moonpool.

Tribe Terms

edit
  • Beetle-brain – an insult used like 'mouse-brain' from the Clan terms
  • Caught-prey – freshly caught food; fresh-kill
  • Cave of Pointed Stones – a place where the Tribe healer and the rest of the cats hear from the Tribe of Endless Hunting; equivalent to the Moonstone/Moonpool
  • Frozen-waterwinter; leaf-bare
  • Freed-waterspring; newleaf
  • Telling – a meeting held in the Cave of Pointed Stones in which the healer hears the voice of the Tribe of Endless Hunting; equivalent to sharing dreams with StarClan

Other groups of cats

edit

The Place of No Stars

edit

The Place of No Stars is seen as another place where the spirits of dead cats go for their afterlives. It is an immense forest bathed by a sickly yellow light, and according to Darkstripe, it is impossible to leave. It is also noted that StarClan do not at all walk the forest. Cats who have caused great pain in their lives are sent here. Tigerstar, Darkstripe, Brokentail, and Hawkfrost are seen as residents of the dark forest, and there are traces of other cats as well. In Secrets of the Clans it says that Clawface walks here as well. There is no moon or stars here, nor prey or hunger; instead, there are only clouds and darkness that linger in the skies, and scraps of darkness that vanish if pounced on. Shadows constantly move in the gloom.

In Starlight it appears to be laid out in the same way that the first forest was, because when Brambleclaw was first here, he saw Tigerstar in what looked like the old ThunderClan camp.

The path of shadows is also mentioned. In Sunset, when Tigerstar encounters Darkstripe here. Tigerstar tells Darkstripe, "Do not try to follow me. Cats have no friends or allies here. They must walk their path of shadows alone." with a hint of regret in his voice. Earlier, Tigerstar mentions that he does not need starlight to follow his path, suggesting that a path of shadows and a path of starlight (which may represent StarClan) are different.

According to Vicky Holmes, the Place of No Stars and StarClan exist on different planes, which makes it difficult for StarClan cats to enter the Place of No Stars and vice versa. A risk of entering the Place of No Stars is not being able to find a way out and being forced to wander the dark forest for eternity.[1]

The Place of No Stars has a clear boundary with StarClan's forest, as seen in The Sight when Jaypaw wanders into the territory. The border is a wall of mist, which swirls when a cat passes through it, and as it is crossed, the scenery changes to that of whichever forest is being entered. It is not clear if the cats in the dark forest are able to cross into StarClan's forest; however, it is known that StarClan cats may enter the dark forest, as shown when Spottedleaf entered to retrieve Jaypaw, telling Tigerstar that she crossed the border with StarClan's permission. When Jaypaw asks if Hawkfrost and Tigerstar can come with them to StarClan's forest, Spottedleaf replies that Tigerstar and Hawkfrost have chosen their own path, and the two toms do not follow after Spottedleaf and Jaypaw.

Like StarClan, the cats in the dark forest are able to walk the paths of living cats' dreams and meet with them there. Medicine cats are also able to visit this place, as evidenced by Leafpool's encounters in the forest.

In a recent author chat, the authors said that the dark forest's official name is the Place of No Stars. No one of the Clans talks about it, since it is so horrifying.[2]

BloodClan

edit

BloodClan were a hostile group of cats consisting of rogues who lived in the Twolegplace near the old territory. BloodClan was not a true Clan, as its cats neither believed in StarClan nor followed the warrior code.

They only appeared in one book, The Darkest Hour, yet still held a very important role: trying to force the four Clans out of the forest. BloodClan were led by a vicious cat named Scourge, but the Clan disbanded immediately after Scourge was killed (he had only one life, not nine, because of his disbelief in StarClan).

edit

Healing Herbs

edit

Under no circumstance should you treat your cat or yourself with these herbs.

  • Borage Leaves – To be chewed and eaten. The plant can be distinguished by its small blue or pink star-shaped flowers and hairy leaves. Great for nursing queens as it helps with the supply of milk. Also brings down fever.
  • Burdock Root – A tall-stemmed, sharp-smelling thistle with dark leaves. The roots are to be dug up, the dirt washed off, and chewed into a pulp, which can be applied on rat bits. Cures infections.
  • Catmint/Catnip – Leafy plant normally found in Twoleg gardens. The best remedy for green cough.
  • Chervil – Sweet-smelling plant with spreading, fernlike leaves and small white flowers. Juice of leaves can be used for infected wounds, and chewing the roots helps with bellyache.
  • Cobweb – Spiderwebs that are wrapped around an injury to soak up blood and to keep the wound clean. Stops bleeding.
  • Coltsfoot – A flowering plant, a bit like a dandelion, with yellow or white flowers. Leaves can be chewed into a pulp, which is eaten to help shortness of breath.
  • Comfrey – Identifiable by its large leaves and small bell-shaped flowers, which can be pink, white, or purple. The fat black roots can be chewed into a poultice to mend broken bones or soote wounds.
