Hello. As an interested reader, my first reaction to "Some sources describe the Great Trail as beginning at one point or another." was: where? In the interest of completeness (or even NPOV), I think it's a good idea to include the most common examples. If it's a really marginal issue, then I would take the sentence out because it seems to leave a noteworthy point unexplained. When you added the link to Nancy Cunard, I failed to note the where the "#" went to. Therefore I thought that I had the wrong Cunard in the first place and removed the endnote that indicated she was a Cunard by marriage whereas Nancy was a born Cunard. Realizing now that I had identified her correctly in the first place, what I should have done (if anything) was just specifically identify her as the former Maud Alice Burke. Am I on the mark now? (DYK there are no fungal Featured Articles on wikipedia at all?) I've modelled this on the dinosaur collaboration which has yielded a few FAs.

It's really nice that you read the article and reported to me that you have no interest in the topic - it showed some sense of readership, even though you didn't like the thing at all. In my opinion, things on DYK should be a bit bizarre in order to be special and note-worthwhile. Millennium City edit

I thought Millennium City, Hong Kong had real DYK potential but could see it had some problems too. I cleaned up the grammar and added citations and a few more facts so it would be appropriate. I think we should strive to have at least one DYK per group concern Asia, Africa or South America rather than Europe and the USA. DYK Discussion edit

Let's wait until we get more agreement on the whole deal with the hooks and the word "that" before making any changes to DYK. Also, I'm starting to dislike this whole shortening idea. Sure, it may make them sound better, but I preferred them when they were interesting and had dates and other particular names. Sure, there's probably a middle ground here which is ideal. I might be "dumbing them down" too much. My DYK involvement is recent too. I’ve only been a contributor for 1 month. Someone submitted my Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection article without my knowledge and it was chosen. Only in the last few days have I taken an active roll in the DYK process: choosing articles for the next update, editing hooks so that they are sharp, and even vetoing stuff that is POV, not up to editorial standards or whatever. I know its probably just a matter of time before my honest efforts at quality-control in this regard enfuriate someone, but my fingers are crossed that it is later rather than sooner.

I have what is probably a very unusual Wikipedia guideline for myself:

Write about what you don’t know. Write about what you don’t care about TOO much. When one has to research something, one is forced to find proper citations. When one doesn’t have a deep emotional involvement with an issue, one avoids the hyperbole, POV and resultant edit wars that characterize the worst stuff on Wikipedia.

DYK : Picture slot edit

For a wider audience, I think Runamo might be more interesting and fun than the Historic House. That's why I think it should have the picture slot. If you disagree, you may always change the order. When it comes to Californian politicians, I couldn't agree more. From now, I'd suggest to include politician bios only if the politician has at least accomplished something worth mentioning. Nikki Haley edit

Nish, you removed Nikki Haley on the basis of too much USA-centricism but replaced it with an article you created that is also USA based. Also, Haley was a first (the hook was ..that Nikki Haley is the first Indian American Republican legislator in the USA). I am having trouble believing she is less interesting than another article about a California or New Jersey politician with little special distinction. The Haley article wasn't expired - although it will be by the time of the next update. I am reluctant to bring this up, as I appreciate your great work at DYK and you flattered me greatly with a DYK award, but I am really confused by and uncomfortable with this choice. My DYK was removed yesterday per US-centrism. Mine was the next one up, and no one had updated in over 10 hours, so I quickly added my DYK as well as some other foreign-topic DYK's. Anyway, the DYK time rules (5 days) isn't something we have to strictly follow. We can cut some slack on DYK's when it's backlogged (which has been happening now because some people are adding 2-3 day old items to Next Update). Therefore, you can add entries even if they are expired by 1-2 days and are not problematic. Hope that answers your questions. Nishkid 64 22:22, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Your explanation does not address my concerns because your revision of 15:26, 5 January 2007 removed Nikki Haley with your comment "Add more, rm Nikki Haley since it's Jan 1st and i’m trying to remove US-centrism". That revision came 4 minutes (not ten hours) after the previous revision and was the same one in which you introduced your own Allan O. Hunter article. You can therefore say that you dumped my choice in favor of your choice of the article you had written because your article was written first, but the “US-centrism” comment baffles me because you replaced one US politician with another one in the very same edit. The DYK guidelines advise us against choosing our own articles. I noticed but didn’t object to Frederick R. Lehlbach, Henry Helstoski, Edward J. Patten, George N. Seger and Charles S. Joelson in less than a week, but when you dump my choice of an article with a nice hook in favor a guy with less DYK impact, you make me feel slighted, and if the Nikki Haley author was tuned into what was happening I bet he or she would be pretty bummed out too. I don't dislike you because of this choice, it's not a big enough deal. But c'mon. Not cool.

Since we have more submissions per day than is needed, and 5 days isn't a deal-breaker, then we can afford to go with the best mix of the best articles with an eye towards the older one rather than scraping the barrel to post the oldest DYK's available. I think the DYK's that Camptown and I chose for today are a nice mix and to flush them for DYK’s that are a day older is unnecessary. First of all, it is not fair to other people who expect their DYK on the Main Page and see their article not make it. And by the 10-hour update, I was talking about the real DYK, not the Next Update. Did you look at [1]. I added mine in replacement of Nikki Haley, but as a result of the lack of DYK's at Next Update. It was only after did I realize that I might get hit with US-centrism claims, so I removed the newer one since it can go on the Main Page at a later date. Also, it is the point of DYK editors to pick which articles are good, and which aren't. Yes, we're trying to make them interesting, but removing entries solely because you don't think it's a good DYK is not a valid reason. DYK is a community effort, and leaving the decision to remove DYK's to a few editors was not the point intended. We're trying to accomodate all DYK's made; and if they are bad, we try to reword them to suit the Main Page standards. Also, I knew someone would probably complain about the fact that I added my own DYK to Next Update, but it wasn't intentional. Had there been someone else's DYK, like yours for example, I would have removed another entry and replaced it with this one. I'm sorry if you were offended by my actions, but I wasn't trying to hurt anyone. I was just trying to accomodate everyone's DYK's. When I first came to DYK, I thought there was a selection process for DYK, and I thought they weeded out boring DYK's from the list. I was wrong, and apparently, the goal is to get all suggestions on the Main Page (even if they are a day or two late). The Expired Noms section is more for problematic DYK's rather than DYK's that didn't make it because someone felt it was not interesting or appealing. If we did that, then people would complain that it is a biased process. Its ok, Nikki Haley is up on mainpage. I am surprised that a prominent Indian American (Nish I know is desi as well) was replaced with a random guy with a wiki-article. If nothing she could be considered India related. I have been busy, but am tuned in now. As you said its not a big deal, but I will say I like the Malaysian court cases better than our series on NJ/CA politicians. It's my current understanding that neither Nish nor Camptown meant to remove Nikki Healy...it was supposedly a mistake that coincidentally happened twice in a row. As they are both good and reasonable editors, I'm inclined to believe this version of events. And yeah, I know that Nish is Indian American, and it did strike me as odd that he flushed Nikki Healy unless he resents her marrying an Irishman (joking!). Am I taking crazy pills? edit

No, no...there's no dislike of you on my part; I said as such and I meant it. In regards to the ideal selection process, I think it's a bit contradictory to say:

...it is the point of DYK editors to pick which articles are good, and which aren't...but removing entries solely because you don't think it's a good DYK is not a valid reason.

When an inferior article appears on the suggestion list, its our duty to pass it over. If a bad article makes it to "next update", its our duty to veto it and send it back to the pool. It is absolutely our responsibility to give preference to articles based on catchiness. Read the guidelines.

That's why you send out messages that say "An article which you started, or significantly expanded, was selected for DYK!" not "Okay, we posted your article on DYK because we couldn't find a reason not to."

You also just said:

DYK editors shouldn't decline DYK suggestions based on their appeal or interest.

Huh? Am I taking crazy pills or isn't that exactly what our mandate is? It says right there on the DYK page that facts should be "Interesting to draw in a variety of readers around the world."

That being said, please understand that I don't think your articles are inferior. They are excellent, but in regards to what they concern of late (CA and NJ legislators), I think DYK has had all it can take this week. This sword cuts both ways: My article on Ani has been suggested by a couple people as worthy of inclusion. However, we've run Haghpat Monastery, Trdat the Architect and Tigranakert this past week. As much as I like getting my little yellow DYK kudos, I think we’ve given medieval Armenia enough attention for one week.

You said you were disheartened by the fact that I removed one of your DYK’s? Can I please reiterate that you removed my selection and replaced it with yours? I just changed it back. If you fail to see that you dissed me first, even if it was accidentally, then you’re tripping (...I couldn’t find an easy way to say that in formal English!)

To hopefully boil this down to a peaceful conclusion, you explained that you didn’t intentionally toss out my choice for in favor of your own. I totally accept that without reservation; all’s well.

You were declining DYK's just because you thought they were boring. On the other hand, I thought they were quite interesting. It's all a matter of POV here and that's the problem. As for the DYK removal, I wasn't referring to the article, but to the actual fact. You removed one of my entries from Next Update just because it was another California guy, and you failed to send it back to the "main pool". You also commented on a nicely-expanded article saying it seemed stupid to say that a Czech math professor had lectured in all of the country's universities. As for the California/NJ stuff, I perfectly understand what you mean. I did stack DYK up with 12 or so articles on politicians in the last two weeks, and I just want to say that I'm done for now (making politician articles, that is). Regardless, you're overexaggerating here. We update DYK 3 times a day, and in two weeks it should have been updated around 42 times. One of my political DYK's appeared on the Main Page 12 out of those 42 times. That doesn't look like DYK saturation to me.

Anyway, as for the whole "disheartened" thing, I was talking about Cecil F. White, which you just removed from DYK and didn't even place back on the suggestion page. Also, I already told you why I removed your selection. This a community process, so people will be replacing entries from time to time. I don't know why you thought it was, but I wasn't trying to diss you. I had not even thought of the expectation of any such reaction. At least, when I removed Nikki Haley, I put it back on the suggestions page and I had planned to use it for the next DYK update. You removed Cecil F. White completely, and it never appeared on DYK because you hadn't replaced it at suggestions. As for the DYK repetition, what can I say? We're dishing out articles on particular topics of interest...topics that we can write about, and so they would naturally appear on DYK. I make all these articles so people will get to hear about these people, and wander into the article and make some good-faith changes. Meh, that's just my take on all the comments you made. Not placing your suggestion back in the pool was just an oversight. By now you should understand that the software we use made it appear like you removed my suggestion and immediately replaced it with your own. At that moment, making sure your DYK went back into the pool just slipped my mind. DYK doesn't get updated as often as you say, but I'm not going to quibble about that...I think we may both be skewing the numbers based on equally honest guesswork. It seems you really disagree with my position that not all good articles are DYK worthy. I've written like 200 articles: I submit less than 10% of them. That doesn't mean the other 90% are shit. It just means that (for example) because I wrote about a dozen different parks in Massachusetts doesn't mean a selection of articles for a global audience should feature a dozen different parks in Massachusetts in 2 weeks. It guess you think every article you write should be on DYK. That doesn't make you a bad person, and you do write well, but I obviously disagree on that point. We also disagree about what is a worthwhile hook. Being a big shot Yugoslavian math guy and talking about math at most of that country's college is expected. It's like saying the bishop-so-and so used to be a priest or or that prince so-and-so has royal blood. But disagreeing isn't the same as having animosity, and we're both on the same team, so I hope all's well and we'll continue to work together in DYK and wherever else our paths might cross here. Well, I had actually added 3 DYK's and removed Nikki Haley (I think). About DYK, my number is roughly accurate. It should be ideally updated 4 times a day, but since I do 2 updates a day, and another random admin does one, it equates to 21 updates a week, approximately. I don't write articles as frequently as you do, and I try to put a lot of time an effort into my articles, which is why I submit them for DYK (which is also why almost all of my articles are around 7-10 KB). I know other articles aren't of the same quality, but some of them are still decent (like the Yugoslav math guy). For the future, I think it's best if we try to find another interesting hook from the article, and that way the well-written article can still be on the Main Page. There is not now and never is likely to be a project directly relating to Liechtenstein. Also, unfortunately, the quality of the majority of the Liechtenstein articles is not really at all good. By having them assessed and included in the scope of a project, they might receive a bit more attention, particularly if individuals interested in Liechtenstein joined the project. The France project has just recently expanded to include Andorra and Monaco on a similar basis. Eventually, when I get the articles lists together for all these projects, they can also be checked for improvements, vandalism, and other changes. I wish the country were large enough to get its own project, but I really can't see that ever happening, and having an interested project is better than not having one. I hope anyway.
