Cite table edit

Short version of Citation templates, Citing sources, Footnotes

Do refer to the template for each, because there are many other possible parameters, to cover many other cases, and examples are often provided. This is a modified table based upon one from User:Humus sapiens.

How to do editing stuff edit

dates and ranges Shortcut to page in Manual of Style: MOS:NUM (Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers)
Charles Robert Darwin (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist ...
markup: 12{{nbsp}}February 1809{{snd}}19{{nbsp}}April 1882 or 12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882

using templates:
{{BCE|link|686}} → 686 BCE; {{CE|link|2015}} → 2015 CE
{{Circa|2015}} → c. 2015
{{daterange|May 2014|April 2015}} → May 2014 to April 2015

quotations {{quote}}, {{quote box}}, {{quote frame}}, {{pull quote}}, {{block indent}}
cite Tanakh {{bibleverse-lb||book-name|ch:verse|HE}}
  • separate link for wikipedia article for the sefer
  • supports range of verses in format n-m
  • first parm is used for multi-volume books (eg. Samuel, Chronicles)
link to Hebrew wikipedia [[:he:מחיר יין|Mechir Yayin]] for this: Mechir Yayin

If you want to link to other pages only if an English-language article doesn't exist:
{{illm|Jokery|fr|Blague|hu|Vicc|de|Witz}} for this: Jokery [fr; hu; de] To link to all other languages:
{{illm|Jokery|WD=Q131138}} for this: Jokery [Wikidata]
Find the WD field by going to wikidata.org and searching for the term

foreign words {{lang-he|'''אמונה'''}} yields: Hebrew: אמונה
symbols non-breaking space = & nbsp;  ; ndash = & ndash;  ; mdash = & mdash;
proounciation Help:IPA; Help:IPA for English WP:IPAE; Help:IPA for Hebrew

{{IPA}} offers the complete phonetic set, an easy-to-fill single field, but no auto-link to the help page:

{{IPA|/ˈkærəktɚz/}} for: /ˈkærəktɚz/
{{IPA|/[[Help:IPA for English|ˈkærəktɚz]]/}} for: /ˈkærəktɚz/

The localizations of the IPA template do auto-link to the help page, but also force the text into square brackets:

{{IPA-he|ʃlɵ.mɵ bɛn jɛ.ˈhuː.də|pron}} for: pronounced [ʃlɵ.mɵ bɛn jɛ.ˈhuː.də]
{{IPA-ar|ɑː.ˈbuː ɑːʕ.ˈʕuːb|pron}}) for: pronounced [ɑː.ˈbuː ɑːʕ.ˈʕuːb] (Arabic: أبوأيوب)

{{IPAc-en}} offers variants for national versions of English, auto-inserts the "/" delimiter and help link, but is limited to English sounds and requires a separate field for each phonetic element.

{{IPAc-en|,|d|aʊ|_|'|dʒ|əʊ|n|z}} for: /ˌd ˈnz/ ("Dow Jones")
remove <ref> clutter

In section "notes"
  1. insert template {{reflist|refs=
  2. insert <ref name=ref_name>{{cite .... }}</ref> for each <ref>
  3. close the template with }}
In the article
  1. refer to the citations using format <ref name=ref_name/>
  2. followed by {{rp|''page(s)''}}

display wikitext <nowiki></nowiki>
maintain wysiwyg <poem></poem>
superscript & color <small><span style="color:green;">text</span></small> yields text
math
convert units {{Convert|14|m|ft}} → 14 metres (46 ft)

{{Convert|14|km}} → 14 kilometres (8.7 mi)
{{Convert|641|km2|ha sqmi}} → 641 square kilometres (64,100 ha; 247 sq mi)

edit only the lead section of an article Click "edit" for any section and, in the resulting URL, replace the trailing &section=n with &section=0 before re-loading the page.
timeline histogram see here
make columns use tables, html, or use templates:
avoid using HTML <br><br> → {{break|2}} ; <pre></pre> → {{pre|text}}
substitution {{cn|{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}}} becomes {{cn|May, 2024}}

How to do other stuff edit

reply to someone {{reply to|User1|User2-7|prefix=|c=}} Message text. ~~~~
  • prefix= custom prefix before first recipient (def: "@"; useful alt: "Hi, ")
  • c= custom conjunction for final of multiple recipients (def: "and"; useful alt: "or"; when blank: ",")
perform a redirect
  1. Place at the top of the page: "#REDIRECT [[target_page]]".
  2. select at least one Redirect Template (WP:TMR); see also WP:RCAT (Categorizing redirects)
  3. Use {{subst:long comment}} on very short articles (smaller than about 120 characters) which are legitimately that short, for example very short disambiguation pages or articles consisting only of {{wiktionary redirect}}.
make disabiguation page see MOS:DISAMBIG. Use {{disambig}}
find a deleted page Use deletionpedia or ask on wikipedia itself (forgot where)
outdent a discussion thread use the {{Outdent}} template. For example
indent 4 (using "::::")
outdented (using {{outdent|4}})
see a user's contributions See his/her contributions at: Special:Contributions/user_name
see a user's statistics Use the following link:

https://tools.wmflabs.org/xtools/pcount/index.php?name=Boruch_Baum&lang=en&wiki=wikipedia
but change the user name first!

find a specialist search for a related WikiProject. eg. for accounting, search for WP:WikiProject Accounting, and then find Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Business/Accounting task force (courtesy:User:ColinFine)

Template Index edit

Wikipedia contributions edit

Articles created edit

Following is a list of articles which I've created (not including redirects), presented in alphabetical order. The most recent article I wrote is a short page for Tractate (it had existed prior, but as a disambiguation page).

  1. History of the Jews in Kairouan
  2. Primary direction
  3. Tractate (it had existed, but only as a disambiguation page)

Articles improved edit

Following is a partial list of articles to which I contributed, presented in alphabetical order

  1. Aflatoxin
  2. Alice's Restaurant
  3. Articles for deletion - added step-by-step instructions for "non-administrator close"
  4. Azharot
  5. Book of Isaiah - reverted. shame. Here was my version. Here was the short discussion surrounding the revert. I was/am too new at this to know whether the reverter was justified, and no one backed me up, so I let it slide, at least until I learn more of what's legit on Wikipedia. My sense, just from reading other articles, is that with a fight, my edits could have stuck.
  6. Celestial longitude
  7. City University of New York - e.g. sortable table of notable alumni
  8. Cyrus the great
  9. Dartmouth Medal
  10. Djerba
  11. Encyclopedia of the Holocaust
  12. Halukkah - major rewrite
  13. Hawaii - There exists a mess of pages with overlapping content that could be combined, reorganized, renamed. I made a few incremental improvements.
  14. Help:IPA - easy copy/paste column of symbols
  15. History of the Jews in Bulgaria
  16. History of the Jews in Croatia
  17. Hylomorphism - inclusion of Neoplatonic notion of universal hylomorphism
  18. List of conjunctions (astronomy) - page should be renamed to "List of planetary conjunctions"
  19. Kapparot -major rewrite
  20. Kaspiysk
  21. Mimouna
  22. Oescus - turned skeletal stub into real article
  23. Office of Foreign Assets Control - e.g. table of targets for each sanctions program
  24. Rabbit Hash, Kentucky
  25. Satmar (Hasidic dynasty)‎
  26. Senior Sachs
  27. Solomon ibn Gabirol - major rewrite
  28. Sullivan and Cromwell
  29. Surgut
  30. Tashlikh
  31. Terefah
  32. Tiergarten (park)‎
  33. Tikkun Olam - but its still a mess
  34. U.S. uniformed services pay grades - added tables of the actual salary $$$

work in progress edit

  1. List of conjunctions (astronomy) - page should be renamed to List of planetary conjunctions
  2. Draft:Andrew_Penson - Once / if accepted:
* add redirects
* link to it from other articles
  1. possible deletion of page List of kosher restaurants. See my talk page.
  2. continue learning at Wikipedia:Help_desk#.22policy.22_v._.22content_guideline.22_-_WP:NOT_v._WP:NOTE.2C_WP:NFT
  3. continue clean-up ofHistory of the Jews in Bulgaria
  4. continue clean-up ofHistory of the Jews in Croatia

Links to other Wikipedians edit

  • AKS.9955 - I copied elements (eg. scrollable info-boxes) from Arun's well designed user-pages.
  • Humus sapiens - I copied elements and content from here (ie. citation table, template and policy table), but needed to heavily alter it to possiblly be useful to me.
  • Largoplazo - The message box at the top of my talk page was copied from him.
  • Zozoulia - Way too much personal information, and a userbox junkie.
  • Carlossuarez46 - I came across him while browsing User page Hall of Fame, and his page Slavic toponyms for Greek places gave me the idea for a page of Jewish toponyms.
  • Wugapodes - Fan of using offline resources. Introduced me to Worldcat to find a reference library. Don't forget wikipedia's own access to online resources, via WP:LIB
  • GrammarFascist - I haven't put this user to the test to know whether the name is just bluster.
  • Tony1 - "professional editor and research consultant". His pages include "Self-help writing tutorials", and content on MOS. See his position on what he calls "overlinking", with which I strongly disagree (the purpose of a link is NOT to attract the user's eye to a "high-value link"; it is to inform the user of the existence of a relevant page, and to simplify navigation there). His position seems to have gained enough traction on English wikipedia that he has an automated bot to troll pages and delete links that don't meet his criteria. Mindless destruction (ie. bot deleting links) and a destructive presence.
  • Editor2020 - has a useful-looking toollbox and noticeboard section, but I haven't made time to look closely.
  • Qwertyus - has "one and only one" user box! (∃!). Check out the pages that he started!
  • Marek69 - has some very cool markup features incorporated in his user page. Near the top of his page, he creates a table which incorporates the content of cascades of other pages by reference (beginning with references to pages {{:User:Marek69/Left}} and {{:User:Marek69/Main}}) and he makes liberal use of the {{hidden}} template.
  • Apcbg (Lyubomir Ivanov) - Bulgarian mathematician, green party activist, and Antarctic explorer.
  • Sam Sailor - extensive, I mean really extensive, glossary, navigation guide, lists of templates & boilerplates

Userboxes edit

  • This user thinks userboxes are silly.
  • This user thinks userboxes are dumb.
  • This user thinks userboxes are generally difficult to read.
  • This user thinks userboxes are an inferior method of communicating information.
  • This user would like to start an organization of like-minded wikipedians:
    • The Textual Order of Userbox Naysayers
    • The ASCII Knights of Vt101 Users
    • The CLI Brotherhood of Tty Emulators
  • This user is a member of the Jewish History Wikiproject.
  • This user is a member of WikiProject Judaism

Possibly useful edit

This was originally a table copied from User:Humus sapiens, being made useful for me as I have time and inclination
