A few comments on the 1981-82 schedule:

This is from all sources I could find. These include the Toronto Star archives for Toronto, Barrie, Peterborough and Toronto French listings; newspaperarchive’s Winnipeg Free Press listings for Winnipeg and Winnipeg French listings; newspaperarchive’s Syracuse Post-Journal and Herald-American for Kingston and occasional Montreal and Ottawa listings; Google news archive’s Spokane paper’s Vancouver listings and Toledo Blade for Windsor listings.

Brandon had a CBC affiliate, and the Winnipeg paper listed them, but they were always the same as Winnipeg.

A couple interesting findings:

Winnipeg French and Toronto French did occasionally differ.

Windsor always went with Toronto unless the Red Wings were involved. Apparently they couldn’t show a Red Wings game, even when the Red Wings’ carrier, channel 50 in Detroit, was not showing the game. For example, March 27.

Now, oh for Edmonton, Calgary, the Maritimes, and complete Ottawa and Montreal listings.

1994-95

Well, I decided to give the lockout-shortened 94-95 season a shot. It was a short schedule (therefore a bit easier) and significant in that it was the first season of weekly double-headers. For reference, I used that year's game schedule, my memory, and some educated guesses. I'm pretty sure the schedule of games is accurate, though there may be some errors with broadcasters. Corrections are welcome. This was Greg Millen's first season at HNIC. Note that Jim Peplinski worked a couple of early-season games before he decided to make a comeback--by March he was playing for the Flames again. Also note that Ken Daniels substituted for Don Wittman when he had commitments to CBC's coverage of the Tournament of Hearts and the Brier curling tournaments.

Alright here's my guess of the 95/96 HNIC schedule... so there definitely could be errors. For example I'm not sure if they showed NJ-VAN or NYR-EDM on December 30/95 so I've went with the Canucks game. Similarily, the Canucks game in Detroit may have been shown on March 2/96 but I've left it off as TOR-DAL was shown for sure. I've included some commentator guesses as well.

October 7/95 was the first Saturday of the season and I have no clue if HNIC had a late game that night or not. It's safe to bet the Leafs and Canadiens games were shown but I'm not sure about other games. Winnipeg hosted Dallas, Calgary visited Tampa Bay, and Ottawa hosted Buffalo that night too. I have a Flames pocked sched for that year and it doesn't list their game in Tampa as being on TV and CBC rarely showed Sens games so I'm guessing it wasn't on either. That leaves the Jets as possibly having been shown to western Canada.

I couldn't find a Leafs game scheduled for the 17th of Feb 96. Is it possible HNIC picked up a Toronto game somewhere else on the schedule? I know for a fact they wern't shown on March 16/96 as CBC devoted its early timeslot to the opening of the new Molson Centre in Montreal that night with a full network broadcast of Rangers-Canadiens. The Canucks-Leafs game the following afternoon from Maple Leaf Gardens was then shown on CBC.

1998-99

Ok I'll take a shot at the 1998/1999 HNIC on CBC schedule. This was the first season under Labatt's sponsorship of the show with early and late games being moved up by one-half hour to begin at 7:00pm and 10:00pm ET now respectively. Under the Labatt sponsorship, HNIC got a revamp of sorts with a new rendition of the opening theme music, a new design for the show's logo, and new bumper music.

A CBC technicians strike in February 1999 almost prevented the opening game of the Air Canada Centre in Toronto to not be shown. But CBC was able to use the ESPN2 feed of the game with Bob Cole and Harry Neale calling the action off monitor from an arena in the US. Up until this point in the season I believe that most Montreal Canadiens games were also featured regionally in the early timeslot, but after the technicians strike ended I seem to recall that CBC pulled the plug on regional Habs games as the team was out of the playoff hunt and ratings were down.

I largely forget who the commentators were. I know John Garrett left the show prior to this season to sign exclusively with the new Sportsnet. I also believe that Greg Millen did not appear this season as he may have also been working exclusively for Sportsnet as well. Marc Crawford had a brief stint as an analyst before getting the Vancouver coaching job. This was Dick Irvin's final season in the broadcast booth before retiring.

Help and corrections would be appreciated if any of the games are wrong or there are ones missing. I do remember that the Ottawa @ Montreal game on February 27/99 wasn't aired due to the strike. CBC added the Pittsburgh @ NY Rangers game on the final day of the season to its broadcast schedule as it was Wayne Gretzky's last game. Buffalo-Ottawa on April 10/99 may have been added as a regional game but I'm not sure so I haven't included it.

There are a few places where early regional games, specifally featuring the Ottawa Senators, may have been added that I don't have such as on Jan 8/00 (BUF @ OTT), Feb. 26/00 (NYR @ OTT), and Mar. 25/00 (WSH @ OTT) but I'm not sure so I left them out. A few other interesting items of note. On October 9/99 the original NHL schedule had the Montreal @ Vancouver game as being a 10pm ET start but apparently it was moved to 7pm ET and ended up being a split network telecast with Toronto @ Ottawa. Not sure what the reasoning for this was but it did give the St. Louis @ Edmonton game television coverage which it wouldn't have had otherwise. Or maybe Habs fans in the east didn't want to stay up past their bedtime or something... Also on October 23/99 there was no Canadian team scheduled at 10pm ET so they had to air Boston @ San Jose, weird that the NHL didn't give them a Canadian team in that timeslot. And it's also strange that on December 11/99 and January 29/00 there were no late games scheduled at all, instead the CBC went with matinees on those dates. Anyway, if there's any mistakes or games left out that anyone knows of, let me know and I'll make the corrections.

I think this schedule is pretty accurate. On December 27/00 CBC had Toronto @ Pittsburgh on the schedule which coincidentally ended up being the game where Mario Lemieux came out of retirement and returned to the NHL. Three days later on December 30/00, Ottawa @ Pittsburgh was not televised by the CBC but they did end up sending someone there, perhaps Steve Armitage, to report on the game throughout the evening since there was interest with Lemieux coming back. Also on March 10/01, Montreal @ Phoenix was originally scheduled as the only early game that night, but with the Habs well out of the playoff hunt and the Senators battling for first in the conference, CBC added the NY Rangers @ Ottawa game to the schedule which was televised nationally and the Canadiens-Coyotes game being seen only in Quebec.

This was the first season back after the lockout. Jim Hughson replaced Chris Cuthbert as the number two play-by-play voice after Cuthbert's contract was terminated during the lockout season for supposed budgetary reasons due to the lack of hockey. Ron Tugnutt replaced Glenn Healy as the third colour commentator after Healy went to TSN exclusively. Although Tugnutt's colour commentary was pretty bland, in my opinion, and he wasn't assigned to work the playoffs this season and wouldn't be brought back the following season. Note also that on October 15/05 and March 25/06 respectively, Bruce Rainnie and Elliotte Friedman get a crack at play-by-play. I guess Don Wittman and Mark Lee weren't available those weekends and CBC didn't want to go to the extra expense of hiring Dean Brown to call those games? That's the best guess I can come up with as Brown wasn't used this season.

Drew Remenda joined HNIC for this season only after leaving the San Jose Sharks local broadcasts, which he would then return to in 07/08. He and Greg Millen seemed to split the analyst duties on the late games. I'm guessing this was done to maybe give Millen a lighter travel schedule since he's based in the east the rest of the week.

Other than that the schedule is complete with the VAN @ NSH game that was added special for British Columbia on October 21/06, a late season Ottawa Senators game on Long Island, and a Canucks matinee in San Jose on the final Saturday of the season. CBC provided game coverage of Anaheim-Detroit on January 2/07 following the Steve Yzerman number retirement. A number of afternoon games were also on the schedule this season and these occasional afternoon games have continued on HNIC since then with a handful of them per season. There also seemed to be a noticeable increase in early regional telecasts which has also continued to present.
