  • A fight between two slates of candidates for control of the Allegheny County Republican Party has produced a divided leadership team. Party committee members on Tuesday elected Richard Stampahar of O'Hara as chairman. Stampahar, 68, headed a slate endorsed by almost all of the county's top Republican figures, including Allegheny County Executive Jim Roddey and U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum.
  • But in Tuesday's voting at the party's Downtown headquarters, committee members chose state Rep. Jeff Habay, R-Shaler, to be vice chairman. Habay campaigned as part of a competing slate that portrayed itself as a grassroots movement."We've had in this battle some real innuendos and false statements," the new chairman said. "That's the one thing that really frosts me." Habay beat Heather Heidelbaugh, a Mt. Lebanon lawyer, for the vice chairmanship, 267-231. He will take the place of Jan Rea, a county councilwoman from McCandless. But Habay hardly endeared himself to the county's Republican leaders in challenging their endorsed slate.
