On December, 7th 1941, at around 7:55 the Japanese attacked the small island of Oahu Hawaii. Nobody could have guessed the horrors to come. Chaos consumed the island, bombs, guns, and planes. This first wave of bombing took out small jets and planes that were out by the harbor, but the second wave of attacks led to 18 warships being badly damaged or sunken. The second wave lasted roughly an hour and a half. This attack killed thousands of people including many of the Japanese dive bombers that helped execute this horrific disaster. This series of events caused the relationship between the US and Japan to rapidly deteriorate over the decades.

Back in July of 1939, the US nullified the 1911 Treaty of Commerce and Navigation with Japan, In the summer of 1940 the US began to cut off war supplies to them. By 1941 Japan had occupied all of Indochina and had an alliance with Germany and Italy. The US government decided it would be best to cut financial and material ties with Japan to keep their diligence with China. All of Japan's funds were frozen, and many important people were gaining influence in the Japanese government causing them to hate the United States' aid to China and not them. By this time japan had seen Germany attack on the Soviet Union and wanted the same thing. The two rival countries tried to negotiate and reason with each other, but it wasn't until November of 1941 did, they realized it wouldn't work.  All through Japan tried to make amends up until the attack.

The governor of the prime ministry, Tojo Hikidaki was the man to start the war. The commander in chief of Japan's combined fleet, Yamato Isoroku devised the plan to attack the island and seek their revenge. The attack was ordered on November 5th 1941. By November 16th the fleet was on the way to the island. Commanders were told they would be recalled but due to negotiation with DC Vice Admiral Nagumo Chichi brought out a fleet, 6 aircraft carriers, 2 battleships, 3 cruisers, and 9 destroyers a few hundred miles away from the shore. From that spot 360 total planes launched and set to attack the island.

With the attack coming the US did take some safety measures but not all of them worked. Of all the 126 planes on the ground, 42 were destroyed, 41 were damaged, and only 43 were still able to be used. Only 6 US planes got into the air to fight back against the attackers of this first assault. In total, more than 180 aircraft were destroyed. Having all the ships anchored to the harbor made it an extremely easy target for the Japanese to hit. They decided to do an early Sunday morning for the most surprise. most of the damage to the ships happened within the first 30 minutes, the USS Arizona was blown up with a huge explosion causing it to sink. The second wave happened at 8:50 only 50 minutes after the first. The USS Navada managed to not sink all throughout the war.

The destroyer USS Shaw was split in two and shortly after than. It was over, Japan retreated. The total number of casualties is over 3,400 with over 2,300 killed. The Japanese lost anywhere between 29-60 planes, 5 submarines, 1 or 2 fleet submarines and less then 100 men. it was without a doubt a win on Japan's end. The Pearl Harbor attack severely crippled US navy and air strength in the Pacific. However, of the eight battleships, all but the Arizona and Oklahoma were repaired and returned to service, and the Japanese failed to destroy the important oil storage facilities on the island. On December 8 congress declared war on Japan with only one dissenting vote Representative Jeannette Rankin of Montana, who had also voted against U.S. entry into World War I.
