Charles Rex Pflueger (born August 4, 1996) is a former American basketball player for the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the New Castle Eagles of the BBL.

High school career

Pflueger attended JSerra Catholic High School located in San Juan Capistrano, California and Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California.[1] As a junior Rex contributed on the Mater Dei squad that finished 35-0 and won the National Championship.[2] As a senior he averaged 16.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game and was named Southern California Player of the Year. Mater Dei appeared in the State Championship loosing to Bishop O'Dowd by one point with Pflueger leading with 19 points.[3] He played for the Compton Magic, a nationally known AAU team that won the Adidas Super 64 16U.[4] His senior year he won the 2014 MaxPreps Holiday Classic dunk contest held in Rancho Mirage, CA.[5] Pflueger committed to playing college basketball at Notre Dame over offers from San Diego State, USC, Florida, Boston College and several others.[6][7]

College career

Freshman year Rex earned his first career start at Syracuse (1/28/16), playing 28 minutes and dishing out six assists. He made his case for more playing time during his rookie season with seven points, two blocks and two assists during the 95-91 victory at Duke (1/16/16). Tipped in the game-winning rebound with 1.5 seconds remaining versus Stephen F. Austin (3/20/16) in Notre Dame’s 76-75 NCAA second-round victory. It marked his only field goal of the game in 14 minutes of action.[8] Sophomore year he was a key part of Notre Dame’s defensive efforts during the run to the ACC Championship game, grabbing 14 rebounds with four steals in the three tournament games at the Barclays Center.[9]Junior year he averaged 8.1 ppg and a team high 37 steals. Tipped in the game-winning basket at Syracuse (1/6/18), out-hustling the Orange defenders to run the length of the court and put back T.J. Gibbs’ miss for the game-winning points with 2.3 seconds remaining.[9][10] Senior year Rex missed final 23 games with a left ACL injury, identified in an MRI conducted on December 17, 2018. Underwent successful reconstructive surgery on January 11, 2019.[9][11] In his final season Rex led the Irish to victory at Clemson (2/9/20) with a season-high 18 points, hitting all four of his three-point field goals and grabbing four rebounds.[9][12] Set the school record for games played on Senior Day against Virginia Tech(3/7/20), appearing in his 140th game. Posted a season-high eight rebounds against the Hokies and scored seven points.[9][13] Finished his Notre Dame career as the all-time leader in games played (141) in the victory over Boston College in the ACC tournament(3/11/20).[9]

Professional career

After going undrafted in the 2020 NBA draft, Pflueger signed a one year contract with the Newcastle Eagles of the British Basketball League.[14][15] His stellar defensive play helped lead the Eagles to the BBL Cup Championship.[16] He was also chosen to represent Britain in the EuroBasket Qualifiers travel squad facing France.[17] Rex retired from professional play after the season.

Personal life

Rex was born in Mission Viejo, California to Russell and Rebecca Pflueger.[9] Both parents had an engineering background. Rex has an older brother, Devon that played basketball at USC.[18] Rebecca Pflueger passed away in 2019 from brain cancer. In 2020 Rex and Noah Hahn set up the Molly Hahn and Rebecca Pflueger Memorial Fund at the University of Notre Dame as a means to honor his mother and Noah's wife, who also passed away from brain cancer.[19][20] Rex graduated from the Mendoza College of Business in May of 2019 with a degree in marketing and earned an MBA in May of 2020.[9]
