Thomas William Cowan (1840–1926) co-founded the British Beekeepers' Association and was its president.

Thomas Cowan was born in 1840, in Saint Petersburg and died in 1926 in Clevedon, UK.[1]
Thomas Cowan described himself as a civil engineer [2] and also a farmer.[3]
Thomas Cowan travelled to the USA several times,[4] and was living in Monterey in 1900.[5]
In 1874 Thomas Cowan and Charles Abbot founded the British Beekeepers Association “For the Encouragement, Improvement and Advancement of Bee Culture in the United Kingdom, particularly as a means of bettering the Condition of Cottagers and the Agricultural Labouring Classes, as well as the advocacy of humanity to the industrious labourer – the Honey Bee.” [6]
Thomas Cowan edited both the "British Bee Journal" and the "Bee Keepers' Record".[7]
Thomas Cowan has been credited as the designer of the cylindrical honey extractor.[8]
Thomas Cowan was the author of a number of books on beekeeping and related topics.[9] After his death, his library of more than 1,800 beekeeping related books formed the basis of the Cowan Memorial Library.[10]
