online exhibitions project

edit

remember - exhibit = object/set of objects showcased within an exhibition (usually considered temporary, when juxtaposed with collection)

topics

edit

What It Is - types of online exhibition (part of virtual museum, virtual duplicate of physical exhibit, virtual exhibit of archived items i.e. not on physical display), interactive environment (3-d virtualization, fixed or not) vs. replication of images Who - libraries, museums, archives, universities... Purpose/objective How It Works Early Adopters http://www.sil.si.edu/SILPublications/Online-Exhibitions/intro.htm http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/exhibitions/

ICOM?

Benefits - Archives of objects (--> insurance, preventing theft, etc) - Eternal access (ICOM constit recommends museums to pass on exhibits to future generations in same quality as received) - Broader access (WWW has huge audience)

Emerging Issues - re-presenting objects (scale, texture, color, reproduction quality, etc.) - distribution/licensing/IP - artists' rights, permissions and royalties? - open nature of internet - foreign exports - funding issues - access (control?) - online exhibition v collections online (length of time, can't really delete from internet) - utilizing interactive/3-D capabilities - ethical? (purpose of online exhibit is largely to increase access to art, but these features may limit audience) - how do you maximize what is available online? (not all museums can afford it) Should you maximize or limit online content?
