Expressions of Osceola - JOHN J. BROWNE III AYES September 28, 2003 By Beth Browning, Special to the Orlando Sentinel

KISSIMMEE -- When he paints, John J. Browne III Ayes sees everything in black and white -- literally. He learned he was colorblind when he was 7 or 8 years old. Ayes remembers drawing with a pencil his mother gave him while he was still in a highchair. He said his sister reminded him that he was good enough to replicate a cereal box. From there, he moved on to pen and ink.

Before learning he was colorblind, Ayes remembers his schoolmates commenting on his odd color combinations of clothing. When he was 12, he taught himself to paint with oils. At 18, Ayes entered art school but had to leave because schools are tailored to students who perceive color correctly. Since then, he has painted on his own. Ayes began losing his hearing when he was 20 and has been hearing-impaired since 1995. "I've learned to use my disability as a focus," Ayes said. "The silence has become a fertile ground for shutting out distractions. It's almost like I work in a meditative state." Originally from New York, Ayes moved to Kissimmee about six years ago. Painting in color is difficult for Ayes. In the beginning, he wasn't too successful with mixing colors, and he has struggled through the years to teach himself to use tints and values of single colors. Ayes reads the colors on the paint tubes, has a color wheel and asks his wife, Carmen, whether the colors are correct. He loves to play with strong light and contrast between shadow and light. Talent runs in Ayes' family. His grandfather was a mural painter in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, and his sister is a photographer. Ayes' favorite subject to paint, a series on Taino Indian heritage, resulted from a trip to Puerto Rico to visit his wife's family. His mother is a Taino, the people who met and greeted Columbus when he came to the New World.

John is also a documented descendant of don Juan Ponce de Leon and has recently been invited to participate within important events at Melbourne, Florida, Orlando, Florida and Orange County, Florida. See recent article within Florida Today News:Proof and sources:
