Keeping first paragraph on wikipedia page

Description and History

edit

Adding Under Description and History:

The gay liberation, lesbian feminism, and the sexual revolution of the 1960's and 1970's helped bring attention to the problems faced by the people in the LGBT community. Before this period, they had no civil rights or protections in employment, housing, or public accommodations. In addition, the lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders did not have advocacy programs in their community; therefore, they were a largely invisible population. However, Burnside Triangle helped those in the LGBT community feel as though they were not invisible by providing bars and clubs as social gatherings.[1]

Adding to first paragraph under Description and History (citations included in this one)

After first sentence:

Burnside is a triangular set of city blocks that anchors the north end and acts as a welcoming space to the district drawing visitors throughout the region to many different meeting spots, including bars and nightclubs.[1]

Adding after second sentence:

Burnside, providing culture and entertainment, is an area downtown identified for being home to Portland’s LGBTQ community.[2]

Add under Description and History

The Burnside Triangle houses a combination of gay-friendly businesses such as independent shops, restaurants, housing, and social services.[3] According to [Gay Today], some of the businesses in this area that should be visited include, “The Egyptian Room, gay-popular Palio Café, the McMenamins Bagdad Pub and adjacent McMenamins Bagdad Theater, Bread and Ink Cafe, the Cup & Saucer Café and Vincente’s Pizza.”[3] The Burnside Triangle is also known for their gay bars, including the infamous Three Sisters, Silverado, Scandals, and Boxxes.[4]

Gay Friendly

edit

According to Go Gay Today, Portland, Oregon is one of the gay-friendliest cities in America. It is know for being very warm and very welcoming to everyone. There is no specific gay ghetto; therefore, the gay and gay-friendly establishments are everywhere.[3] It is commonly compared to the city of San Francisco because of their high percentage of people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Go Gay Today website says, "while San Francisco is ranked first, Portland Metro region has the second highest percent of LBGT residents of any metropolitan area in the nation. About 5.5 percent of adults in the Portland area identify as LGBT".[4] This is a large jump from 1990, when Portland was ranked 11th in the nation. Portland is made up of many gay-friendly neighborhoods, including the Burnside Triangle.

edit

[5] The Pride Festival and Parade takes place Sunday morning during the pride weekend and features a new theme each year. Description History • I’m a little confused about the Burnside Triangle part of this. Maybe give a little more background knowledge about what it is in a different paragraph before you start talking about it in general! (now I see where you talked about it, maybe move it to the beginning) • Consider going into more description about the different bars in the Triangle. (I think that is what you are talking about in the “Add under Description and History”, I kinda don’t know much about this!)

Gay Friendly • I noticed you say arguably a lot in this section, maybe try and use different words to switch it up a little. Pride Northwest • Maybe go into a little more detail about the Pride weekend and more of what happens during the weekend.

1. The article taught me things that I didn’t know about the GLBTQ community. 2. I would just suggest to be more specific about things, add more details

Overall your research and information on your article is really good. Just be careful as to how you word certain sentences as I noticed in the first two paragraphs how you gave ownership to certain references that should have been worded a bit differently. Inserting a bit more and going farther in depth would benefit your article a whole lot also. I'd say before you state a foreign group, person, place, or thing briefly explain what it is so that the reader perceives a better understanding. Add a few more key points about the Burnside Triangle, etc. and your article will be fine. ~~~~ Kauzen2 (talk) 21:18, 29 March 2016 (UTC)K.A.
