If we would like to help a fellow Wikipedian, wikilove messages and barnstars are nice but imho a friendly edit says more. I have taken the effort to extend a friendly gesture by editting something another person is interested in or cherishes - and that serves a number of purposes:

  • it is more meaningful than a wikilove message or a barnstar.
  • it is a meaningful gesture outside the barnstar culture.
  • it actually helps Wikipedia.
  • it makes a person feel nice that someone cared to do something nice for them.
  • it helps, albeit in a very small way, another to meet his goals.
  • it extends the idea of service as a gift.

I'm taking my first steps in this direction. Let's see how it goes. AshLin (talk) 13:27, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
