Islan Nettles, a 21-year-old transgender woman, died following an assault in New York City in August 2013.

Nettles and a friend, who is also a transgender woman, were attacked by a group of men in Harlem, New York City on August 17, 2013.[1] According to witnesses, the attack began when the the men realized Nettles and her friend were transgender.Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page). Nettles was hospitalized, became comatose, and later died.[1]
