The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection was established on 3/4/2012 and abolished on 12/12/2017.

It was a Queensland Government department responsible for the environment, ecologically sustainable development, climate change policy and science, environmental planning and historical cultural heritage and the Great Barrier Reef. On 12 December 2017, under Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 3) 2017, the functions of the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection were transferrerd to the Department of Environment and Science.

Establishment

On 3 April 2012, under Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 1) 2012, the Department of Environment and Resource Management was restructured and renamed the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection. Some functions and units, including the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, were transferred to other departments. On 16 February 2015, under the Administrative Arrangements Order (No. 1) 2015, this Department continued to operate under the same name and previous responsibilities, with the addition of responsibility for the Great Barrier Reef.[1]

Abolition

On 12 December 2017, under Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 3) 2017, the functions of the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection were transferrerd to the Department of Environment and Science.[1]

Function

The agency had the following responsibilities:[1]

  • Coastal management (excluding the Tweed River Entrance Sand Bypassing Project)
  • Contaminated land
  • Ecologically sustainable development
  • Environment including management of mining

  • Historical cultural heritage
  • Nature conservation excluding demonstrated and exhibited native animals and the management of the Protected Area Estate and forest reserves (not including nature refuges)
  • Pollution management
  • Waste management
  • Wet tropics management

Agencies controlled

The agency controlled the Queensland Heritage Council from 3/4/2012 to 12/12/2017 and also controlled the Wet Tropics Management Authority from 3/4/2012 to 12/12/2017.[1]
