The Seventh Fire is a 2016 American documentary film directed by Jack Pettibone Riccobono. The film follows Rob Brown, a Native American gang leader, and his 17-year old protege, Kevin Fineday Jr., on the White Earth Indian Reservation in Minnesota. Rob Brown is sentenced to prison for a fifth time and must confront his role in bringing violent drug culture to his Ojibwe community. Kevin finds himself similarly torn between his desire to connect with his culture and the criminal lifestyle of his mentor.
The title of the film refers to the Ojibwe Seven Fires Prophecy. [1]
Production
editDirector Jack Riccobono first went to the White Earth Indian Reservation in 2006 while working on a short documentary. In 2010, Riccobono returned to the reservation to find someone to talk to about the issue of gang culture migrating from jails and inner cities to isolated native communities, it was on this trip that Riccobono met one of the subjects of the film, Rob Brown.[2]
Shooting for the film began in January 2011. The film required 14 shoots over two and a half years to complete. [3]
In 2015, Terrence Malick and Natalie Portman joined the film as executive producers.[4]
Release
editThe film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 7, 2015, and will receive a theatrical release in the United States on July 22, 2016.
Film Movement acquired the rights to distribute the film in the United States. [5]Metrodome distributed the film in the United Kingdom on May 13, 2016.[6]
Critical reception
editThe film received positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a rating of 100% based on 7 reviewers, with an average rating of 6.7/10.[7]
