Producers decided not to kill her character, Sam Butcher, off and she departed in February.[6] Rachel Kominski (Jacquetta May) departed the show in March while James Gilbey made his final appearance as recurring character Jack Woodman. Show producers decided to axe the character of Pete Beale (Peter Dean), but it was originally planned for the door to be left open.[7] However when Dean spoke negatively of the show to the press, the decision was made to kill his character off.[8] Pete and Rose Chapman left the show in May 1993 and they were killed-off off-screen in December 1993.[9] Mark Monero was written out of his role as Steve Elliot, but writer Colin Brake described it as a "temporary disappearance."[5] Steve left after jilting his fiancée, but returned in the following year.[5] Clyde Tavernier (Steven Woodcock) and Kofi Tavernier (Marcel Smith) left the series in July 1993 when they were written out.[7] Celestine Tavernier (Leroy Golding) returned to the series for six episodes in July for the storyline.[10] June Brown quit the serial in 1993 after becoming "discontented" with the way her character, Dot Cotton, was portrayed.[11] John Altman (who portrayed Nick Cotton) returned to the show in January for the conclusion of his storyline, but later made a more permanent return to the show.[12] Altman decided to leave the series with Brown and so, Nick's wife and son, Zoe Newton (Elizabeth Chadwick) and Ashley Cotton (Rossi Higgins), were introduced for their exit storyline. Brown, Chadwick and Higgins departed in August and Altman left in September.[13] Additionally, Elizabeth Power departed from her role as Christine Hewitt, making her final appearance in October 1993.[14] Michelle Gayle also left the series to focus on her music career; her character Hattie Tavernier departed at the end of the year.
