dr. ir. Andries van Renssen (1946) is researcher and consultant in the area of management of technical information. He studied mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and information science and worked most of his career on the boundary of technology and information science. In 2005 he doctorated at the Delft University of Technology. The subject of his PhD included technology and information science aspects, but also philosophical and linguistic aspects. It describes the development and application of the semantic modelling language Gellish. The PhD 'Gellish - a Generic Extensible Ontological Language reflects the research, development and application of a method for the electronic storage and exchange of designs, operation and maintenance data about any kind of facility or product and the processes in which they are involved, in a way that is readable for people as well as for computers. It provides a solution for the Babylonian confusion of tongues that exists in information that is stored in computer databases that should have been integrated.

Hij studeerde werktuigbouwkunde, procestechnologie en informatica en werkte vrijwel steeds op het grensgebed van techniek en informatica. Hij promoveerde in 2005 aan de Technische Universiteit te Delft. Het onderwerp van zijn proefschrift omvatte technische en informatica aspecten, maar ook filosofische en taalkundige aspecten. Het beschrijft de ontwikkeling en toepassing van Gellish.
