Sandra Llano-Mejia

Biography

Sandra Llano Mejia was born in Cali, Colombia in 1951. Mejia is a well known artist, writer, professor and activist. As Mejia grew up, she became fascinated with art and more precisely, art using technology. When she was deciding where to study art, she took off to Mexico City and lived there for twenty years. She currently resides in New York.

Education

While residing in Colombia, Mejia studied at the Instituto de Bellas Artes de Cali in 1968. After moving to Mexico City, she continued her artistic education at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas, then the Colegio de Artes Visuales(1976). She then studied at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in Xochimilco(1978).

Mejia incorporated medical sensors to record her heartbeat and create a self-portrait. Her art was the first video installation in Colombia that was showcased in the 4th Salon Atenas in Bogota. This piece of art gave Mejia recognition for Colombian conceptual, video and performance art.
