Introducción

El objetivo de este proyecto es agregar interwikis a cuantas páginas y categorías en la Wikipedia en Hebreo sea posible. En los últimos meses desarrollamos bastante experiencia en el tema y nos gustaría compartirla con ustedes. También, si hiciste algo similar a esto en la Wikipedia de tu idioma nos gustaría conocer tus experiencias. Esperamos que esto mejore la cooperación entre proyectos Wikimedia de distintos idiomas.

En concordancia al espíritu libertario de Wikipedia, todas las herramientas relacionadas son distribuidas a título de Software libre.

Nota: esto no se trata de bots que relizan interwikis, sino de un meticuloso proceso manual facilitado por un motor de búsqueda semi-automático.

El principio general

Los tipos

Páginas sin interwikis son sorteadas de acuerdo a su "tipo". Es parecido a las categorías, pero se mantiene como algo aparte, ya que un proceso manual nos hace tratar las páginas con más cuidado. Los tipos no necesariamente categorizan una página enciclopédicamente, sino que las agregan a una lista. Los usuarios pueden navegar por esa lista para facilitar la tarea de encontrar un artículo correspondiente en una Wikipedia de otra lengua.

Por ejemplo, si un interwiki falta en un artículo sobre una determinada planta, al usuario promedio le será difícil encontrar tal artículo en una Wikipedia en otra lengua, ya que esta tarea requiere conocimientos sobre biología. Por el contrario, un usuario que sabe sobre biología podrá navegar la lista y encontrar artículos correspondientes o escribirlos en caso de que no existan.

Otro efecto secundario de estas listas es que automáticamente crean WikiProyectos para crear artículos en Wikipedias de otras lenguas sobre temas locales. En la Wikipedia en Hebreo éstos son artículos sobre Israel y la historia y cultura judías, pero lo podés adaptar a tu propio idioma y, como consecuencia, mejorar la cobertura de tu cultura en Wikipedia de otras lenguas. Este proceso de internacionalización se denomina "contrarrestando la preferencia sistémica" en la Wikipedia en Inglés.

Los tipos son agregados usando una plantilla invisible muy simple, llamada acá he:תבנית:אין בינוויקי (que significa "no interwiki" - el nombre puede ser cambiado muy fácilmente). La plantilla acepta dos parámetros: la fecha, usada para calcular el período de enfriamiento (véase más abajo) y el nombre de los tipos. A diferencia de cómo funcionan las categorías, muchos nombres de tipos pueden ser listados de una vez (otra ventaja de este tipo de sistemas).

Páginas que no necesitan interwikis

Es posible que algunas páginas nunca necesiten interwikis. Un área en la que se reconoció que no hace falta interwikis es páginas de desambiguación de palabras de un lenguage que son irrelevantes en otros lenguajes. No se marcan como otro tipo. En inglés se vería así:

Esto mantiene esas páginas en una lista separada, a ser chequeada de vez en cuando.

El procedimiento

• Una descarga desde http://download.wikimedia.org es escaneada por un guión Perl (que es un software libre cuya fuente se puede obtener por pedido).
• Todas las páginas sin interwikis que no tienen la plantilla "no interwiki" son listadas en el tipo "otro".
• Páginas que tienen la plantilla "no interwiki" son listadas en sus respectivos tipos.
• Los editores miran las listas y
  • si una página correspondiente se encuentra en una Wikipedia de otra lengua, se agregan interwikis y un enlace a la Wikipedia en hebreo desde las páginas en otras lenguas. (Normalmente al agregar un enlace a hebreo en Wikipedias de otras lenguas es propagado a páginas relevantes en otras Wikipedias a través de bots, en cuestión de días).
  • si un editor no puede encontrar una página correspondiente en ninguna Wikipedia en otra lengua y la misma no tiene la plantilla "no interwiki", se agrega la plantilla con los tipos relevantes y la fecha, de esta manera:

En el ejemplo nombres de la plantilla y parámetros traducidos al español pueden ser modificados. Cinco tildes (~~~~~) se transforman automáticamente (al guardar la página) en el día de la fecha.

"Fecha de enfriamiento"

Ya que hay muchas páginas sin interwikis, una fecha de enfriamiento es agregada a la cada página. Las páginas no están listadas en el proyecto durante sus períodos de enfriamiento. Actualmente este período se define como 120 días. Los detalles de su implementación no están completos y sugerencias sobre el tema son bienvenidas.

Comentarios adicionales

• Como fue dicho antes, los tipos no necesitan ser meticulosamente clasificados como las categorías. Normalmente cuando alguien piensa que es relevante y útil agregar un tipo a una página, es agregado. Mientras que las categorías son visibles a la audiencia general y realizan afirmaciones académicas sobres los temas que tratan, los tipos están escondidos y existen para ayudar a editores a encontrar páginas sin enlaces interwiki.

• A veces es conveniente agregar una página específicamente al tipo "otro". Esto podría suceder con páginas esotéricas que no encajan ningún otro tipo.

• La Wikipedia en inglés, a pesar de que es la más vieja y grande en número de artículos, no es necesariamente la más correcta. Por eso, sucedió más de una vez que como resultado del proceso sistemático de crear interwikis se mejoraron páginas en la Wikipedia en inglés. A veces hasta tomamos coraje e hicimos cambios en Wikipedias de lenguajes que casi no conocemos y no recibimos quejas, por lo que suponemos que de verdad las mejoramos. Por supuesto, también funciona en la dirección opuesta - en muchos casos mejoramos la Wikipedia en hebreo para igualarla con una en otro lenguaje que sentimos que era más correcta.

• Si una página no tiene enlaces interwiki, puede ser, a veces, que tal página no debería existir en absoluto, sino que debería ser destruida o fusionada a otra página.

Planes para el futuro

Sugerencias sobre esto son bienvenidas.

• Agregar un parámetro de "importancia". Actualmente no existe, porque todavía no hemos concevido un criterio. En un mundo ideal todas las Wikipedias tendrían que tener las mismas páginas, sin que notabilidad sea local. Sin embargo, en la práctica, listar las páginas por importancia puede ayudar a editores a encontrar páginas para traducir a otras lenguas.

• Agregar estadísticas (gracias a LA2 por algunas ideas). En cada iteración del motor de búsqueda estas estadísticas serán recolectadas:

• • Número de páginas sin enlaces interwiki y sin la plantilla. (+ Porcentaje del número total de artículos.)
  • Número de páginas sin enlaces interwiki y con la plantilla. (+ Porcentaje del número total de artículos.)
  • Número de páginas a las que se les fueron agregados enlaces interwiki desde la última iteración.
  • Número de páginas creadas, sin enlaces interwiki.

Introduction

This project's aim is to add relevant interwiki links to all possible pages and categories in the Hebrew Wikipedia. We became quite experienced in it in the recent months, so we would like to share our experience. Of course, if you did anything similar to this in the Wikipedia in your language, we wish to learn from your experience. We hope that this will improve the cooperation between Wikimedia projects in different languages.

In line with the Freedom spirit of Wikipedia, all related tools are distributed as Free Software.

N.B.: This is not about interwiki bots. This is about a careful manual process, that is aided by a semi-automatic searching tool.

The general principle

As with most other things in Wikipedia - Be bold.

The types

The pages without interwiki links are sorted according to their "type". This is similar to categories, but intentionally kept separate from them, because we feel that a manual process makes us treat the pages with more care. The types do not necessarily categorize a page encyclopedically, but add them to a list, browsing which users will be more apt to find a corresponding article in a foreign Wikipedia.

For example, if an interwiki link is missing from an article about a plant, an average user will find it hard to locate such an article in a foreign Wikipedia, because this requires knowledge in Biology; but a user who does know Biology will be able to go over the list and find corresponding articles, and if they don't exist, to write them.

Another nice side effect of those lists is that they automatically create WikiProjects to create articles in foreign Wikipedias about local topics. In the Hebrew Wikipedia these are articles about Israel and the Jewish history and culture, but you can adapt it to your own language and thus improve the coverage of your culture in foreign Wikipedias; such a process is called "countering systemic bias" in the English Wikipedia.

The types are added using a very simple invisible template, which is called here he:תבנית:אין בינוויקי (this means "no interwiki"; the name can be changed very easily.) It accepts two parameters: the date, used for calculating the cooling period (see below) and the names of the types. That's right - unlike the way it is with categories, several type names may be listed in one swoop (another advantage of the type system).

Pages that definitely don't need an interwiki link

It is possible that some pages will never need an interwiki. We intentionally don't say that about pages which appear to have importance only for the local culture, although it is possible that we will define degrees of importance for this.

One area that we identified in which interwiki links are most likely not needed is disambiguation pages for terms that are homographs in our language, and which are irrelevant for other languages. We just mark it as a yet another type. In English it would look like this:

This keeps all those pages in a separate list, which may sometimes be checked.

Suggestions about this are welcome.

The technical process

• A dump from http://download.wikimedia.org is scanned using a Perl script (it is Free Software and source is available upon request).
• All pages which don't have interwiki links and don't have the "no interwiki" template are added to the list of type "other".
• Pages which have the "no interwiki" template are added to lists of their respective types.
• Editors go over the created lists.
  • If a corresponding page is found in a foreign Wikipedia, interwiki links are added to it, and a link to the Hebrew Wikipedia is added to the foreign page. (Usually adding a link to Hebrew to one foreign Wikipedia is propagated to relevant pages in other Wikipedias by means of bots within days.)
  • If an editor cannot find a corresponding page in any foreign Wikipedia and it doesn't have a "no interwiki" template, then the editor adds the template with relevant types and today's date, like this:

{{No interwiki|date=~~~~~|type=type1; type2; type3}} In the example names of the template and the params are translated to English and can be changed. Five tildes ~~~~~ are translated to today's date.

"Cooling date"

Since there are quite a lot of pages without interwiki links, a cooling date is added to the page. A page is not listed in the project during the cooling period. Currently it is defined as 120 days. The implementation details of this feature are incomplete and suggestions are welcome.

Some other comments

• As said above, types don't have to be meticulously sorted as categories are. Usually when anyone thinks that it is relevant and useful to add a "no interwiki" type to a page it is added. Categories are visible to users and make encyclopedic statements about the subject. Types are hidden, and they are there to help editors and maintainers find pages without interwiki links.
• Sometimes it makes sense to add a page specifically to the "other" type. It may happen with esoteric pages that don't fit to any other type.
• The English Wikipedia, even though it is the oldest and the biggest by article count, is not necessarily the most correct. It happened more than once that as a result of systematic interwiki work we improved pages in the English Wikipedia. Sometimes we even got bold and made fixes in Wikipedias in languages that we hardly know and we heard little complaints, so we suppose that we did improve it. Of course, it also works vice versa - in many cases we improved the Hebrew Wikipedia to match the foreign one when we felt that it was more correct.
• If a page doesn't have an interwiki link, it may sometimes mean that it shouldn't exist at all, but should be deleted or merged.

Plans for the future

Suggestions are welcome!

• To add an "importance" param. Currently it is not done, because we haven't figured out the importance criteria yet. In a perfect world all Wikipedias are supposed to have the same pages and notability is not local, but practice shows that listing pages by importance may help editors find pages to translate to other languages.
• To add statistics (Thanks to LA2 for some of the ideas). At every run of the search tool these statistics will be collected:
  • How many pages are there without interwiki links and without the template. (+ Percentage out of total article count.)
  • How many pages are there without interwiki links and with the template. (+ Percentage out of total article count.)
  • How many pages got interwiki links added to them since the last run.
  • How many new pages without interwiki links were created.
  • (Feel free to add more ideas for statistics!)
